Sublime trio material from Sonny – recorded with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, and a crackling full-on approach that makes the album one of the best straight trio sessions ever cut for Blue Note! Tracks are longish, with a very hardbop groove – complicated in that way that Clark's modern edge could often bring to the piano, but never failing to swing, and always sticking right in the pocket! Titles include "Be Bop", "Two Bass Hit", "Tadd's Delight", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – and the CD features 3 bonus alternate takes!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A brilliant album that would forever change the way the organ was used in jazz! The set's the greatest contribution ever from organist Larry Young – a lean and modal session recorded with help from a young quartet that includes Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson, and Elvin Jones – all leaping ... CD

Hardly a free for all at all – as the album's a masterpiece of focus and direction, and a classic set from the sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers! The album's a real feather in the mid-60s cap of Art Blakey –and features an expanded sound from the quintet era of his group – ... CD

A stellar early Johnny Griffin recording for Blue Note, and one that features him in a larger group with Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, and Wynton Kelly. As the "blowing session" title might imply, this set features long tracks that let the players get in plenty of soloing (and, ... CD

Kirk's Work (aka Funk Underneath)

A strange and tasty little album that Roland Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s – one of his few outings in such a format, and a smoking little session that almost makes us wish he'd cut more of them! The format is relatively simple – with lots of interplay between ... CD

Evidence is an early moment of brilliance from Vincent Herring – and just the sort of set to make him one of the strongest young talents to emerge in jazz during the 90s! There's a rock-solid feel to the set – an approach that's steeped in classic hardbop modes, but which has traces of ... CD
