An excellent album of smooth jazz funk – and despite the fact that it was a monster hit for Tom, it's still pretty hard to find on wax! The record is a perfect example of how great R&B jazz fusion could be – well before the sound hit a kind of smooth jazz saturation point and there was just too much of it and of lesser quality. Tom's funky trumpet's set in a group with players like Lesette Wilson, Jorge Dalto, Bobby Broom, and Marcus Miller – and the arrangements are by Tom, Weldon Irvine, Lesette Wilson, and Dave Grusin. Includes the funky classic "Funkin' For Jamaica", plus "Her Silent Smile", "Moon Rise", "Nocturne", "Forever More", and "Weak In The Knees". (Cover has light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Spiral – Live At Montreux 1978
Novus/Arista, 1978. Very Good+
A wonderful album from Muhal – with all the soulful spiritualness of his best 70s work, more stripped down than later orchestrated efforts, and with a gentler more intimate approach than earlier work. The set is mostly solo piano – although Abrams also plays some occasional percussion ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don't Stop The Music
Arista, 1977. Very Good
A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's ... Second Coming
Mojo, 1981. Near Mint-
After a long and successful stint at Verve/MGM, Jimmy retreated to the underground during the mid/late 70s, where he put out a few hard to find releases on smaller labels. This is one of them, issued on his own tiny Mojo label – and it features a relatively straight soul jazz organ set, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good+
Great early Crusaders stuff, and like many of their 60s sides, filled with memorable soul jazz that would become the template for a sound that would become the face of popular jazz for decades. The songs are almost all short, hard-cracking originals, and they've all got that tight LA groove that ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Cal Tjader's best albums ever – and a sweetly electric side that features Joao Donato on organ and Gary McFarland on vibes! The record is a brilliant extension of Cal's styles at Verve – a bit of Latin, a bit of jazz, with some easily grooving numbers that have just the right ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1975. Very Good
Spiritual live set recorded at the 1974 Montreux festival, and one that has Earland opening into the freer sound that dominated his playing during the mid 70's – with lots of modal grooves, and those long soulful leaps that made his solos always so great! I Keep Coming Back For More
Chocolate City, 1977. Very Good+
Sublime second generation soul from Brenda & The Tabulations – a sweet set of Philly grooves, recorded at Sigma sound with help from Norman Harris, Bobby Eli, and John Davis!
