A soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Love, Strings & Jobim
Warner, 1966. Very Good
A breezy bossa classic from Jobim – recorded in LA, in case you couldn't tell from the cover image that has ol' AC standing with his guitar in a Pacific sunset! The sound's got a nice easy finish – with arrangements by Deodato and Maestro Gaya that are very much in the spirit of Jobim's ... LP, Vinyl record album

So Nice (Pickwick pressing)
Pickwick, Mid 60s. Very Good
Sort of a repackaging of the Brasil '65 album on Capitol – done here in a pressing by Pickwick that features a very psychedelic cover! The record's a mixed bag of tracks that has some bossa piano trio stuff, plus some vocal cuts with Wanda De Sah, the alto and flute of Bud Shank, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Samba Nova
Antilles/Island, 1976. Very Good-
We've never really been sure if this is a compilation of earlier stuff, or some re-recordings that were put together for Island in the 70's. Whatever the case, though, it's a terrific set of tracks featuring Jorge's husky soulful voice, and a nice set of funky samba arrangements. Tracks include ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bateria Nota 10 Vol 4
Top Tape (Brazil), 1974. Near Mint-
Nice of batucada tracks, with 6 long tracks, all played with a good raw percussive vibe: 'Rtimo Da Pesada", "Ole De Tamborim", "Deixa Como Esta", "Sarro No Cafofo", "Ouricando A Mocada" and "So No Apito". LP, Vinyl record album

Milestone, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
A classic batch of Bay Area Brazilian grooves – recorded in the sweet breezy electric style of the Fantasy studios, and featuring the vocals of the lovely Flora Purim in the lead! Elza Carnaval & Samba
Odeon (Brazil), 1969. Very Good
The title kind of gives this one away – as the album features Elza's incredible vocals over a set of hard-driving carnival tracks, most with lively samba rhythms. Nelsinho directed the group with a heavily percussive sound – and Elza's emotive vocals reach over the top of the darkly-tin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1965. Very Good
A real classic by Cal – one of the trademark albums of his time at Verve, and a unique blend of jazz, Latin, and other groovy influences! The tunes have that lightly jazzy approach that made Cal a hit with the radio and jukebox crowds at the time – a bossa-influenced mix of vibes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Beyond The Blue Horizon
CTI, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
A great early CTI session by George Benson, and one of the most stripped-down, straight-ahead funky records he did for the label! There's a sharpness here that's different than the larger feel of some of Benson 's later records – a sound that almost links back to his soul jazz roots in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful blend of jazz, voices, and soul – a landmark record in Max Roach's vocal experimental tradition, and a fitting companion piece to Billy Harper's classic Capra Black album – an equally soulful blend of styles! Baby Batter
Janus, Late 60s. Very Good+
A classic bit of funky guitar by Harvey Mandel – similar to some of Dennis Coffey's early work in that it's got full on guitar power, very much inspired by heavy rock, filtered through an approach that's also got plenty of funk in it! The killer track here is the classic "Baby ... LP, Vinyl record album
