Well, we don't know if Mr B could ever be considered "modern", but this is a pretty groovy batch of 60s pop tunes – like "Mister Kicks", "People", "Wanted", "Wives & Lovers", and "A Beautiful Friendship" – all done to arrangements by Billy Byers, Benny Carter, and Bobby Tucker, with that great mid 60s Mercury pop feel to them. There's some nice jazz elements in the mix, and Billy's always a treat for us!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Mind Magic
Mercury, 1978. Very Good+
Smooth jazzy soul, with excellent production by Wayne Henderson and his At-Home Productions team. David Oliver's got a deep baritone voice, and it slithers sexily through tracks like "Private Secretary", "Who Are You", "Take My Emptiness", and the great mellow groover ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Goes On
Mercury, 1968. Very Good+
A great record, and one that's more of a deeper soul effort than some of his other Mercury sessions! Jerry's back recording in Chicago, and the album has arrangements by Arthur Wright, and production by Cal Carter for the Fountain Productions imprint that would grace Jerry and Billy Butler's ... Live At The Fillmore Auditorium
Mercury, Late 60s. Very Good
Dude! This is the kind of crossover rock/R&B set that the Fillmore scene of the 60s flourished on. Chuck Berry plays live with the band of Steve Miller, which was then a raw bluesy combo, trying their hardest to sound Chicago electric, despite their roots in the Bay Area. Miller sings a bit ... Philly Groove, 1974. Very Good+
Their classic second record, and a pivotal album in defining the east coast uptempo sound of the mid 70's. Rochelle Fleming and the gals sing in soulful harmony style, while Norman Harris and Vince Montana lay down some heavy uptempo grooves. Includes their classic "scolding" songs ... Breakwater
Arista, 1978. Very Good-
A landmark set from a group who only ever gave the world two albums – but who've gone on to have a huge influence over the years! This initial offering from Breakwater is a masterful blend of jazzy fusion and mellower soul – a sound sifted together so perfectly, it really tops the rest ... LP, Vinyl record album

Feeling The Magic
MGM, 1975. Very Good
Great stuff from one of the unsung heroes of 70s soul! The record's a bit rawer than some of Johnny's earlier work – and it's got a sexy cover that puts him more in the camp of Roy Ayers or Leroy Hutson, at least from a visual perspective! The whole album was written and produced by Johnny ... LP, Vinyl record album
