Cool Whalin
CD (Item 389766) Spotlite (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s/Late 60s — Condition: New Copy
One of the greatest collections of bebop jazz vocal work we've ever seen – and a batch of rare material that wonderfully complements some of the more standard work in the genre! The sound here really focuses on the playful vocalese style invented during the bop years – the mode that has a singer emulating the tone and changes of a more famous jazz solo, while bringing their own lyrics into the tune in a fiercely inventive way that matches the instrumental improvisation of the original. The source of a few of these recordings is a bit mysterious, but that's also what makes the collection so great – as it really moves past the few obvious relics from the generation, issued and reissued heavily on labels like Prestige or Savoy. Titles include "I Don't Want Love" and "Gamblers Blues" by Joe Carroll, "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Let There Be Love" by Kenny Hagood, "Sugar Ray" and "Cool Whalin" by Babs Gonzales, "Bless My Soul" and "Beautiful Memories" by Eddie Jefferson, "Especially To You" and "Nobody Knows" by Frankie Passion, and "Searching Blues" and "Nightingale" by Earl Coleman. © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
