On this one, the Crusaders definitely crossed from jazz into funk – but who cares, because the album's so darn great! The record's got a tight LA groove, with some excellent electric keyboards, sweet sax solos, and tight drumming throughout. True proof that sometimes a lot of money can be put to good use to improve a band's sound in the studio – and with the tracks to back it up, like "Creole", "Chain Reaction", "Rainbow Visions", "Hallucinate", and "Soul Caravan". This is album is to jazz funk what Steely Dan's Aja was to 70s rock! (Cover has some light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

New Born Free
Kapp, 1968. Near Mint-
A landmark record from one of the greatest underground vocal groups of the 60s! The Hesitations take the theme to "Born Free", and through some magical soul, turn it into a Civil Rights-era anthem of freedom and pride. The rest of the record is equally great – with a good mixture ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good

His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Merl Saunders
Fantasy, 1974. Near Mint-
We have to admit we've always been somewhat dismissive of Merl Saunders 70s records, perhaps because of the hippy association we have with these bay area recordings. But ultimately there's at least a little bit of funk peeking through on any of his Fantasy recordings, which gets a nice helping ... LP, Vinyl record album
