Whatever It Is
CD (Item 588158) Sawano (Japan), 1991 — Condition: New Copy
German drummer Wolfgang Haffner cooks nicely on this overlooked set from the early 90s – one that's got a classic vibe that reminds us of some of the best Art Blakey projects from later years! Like Blakey, Haffner's a leader who works from the back – sitting at the drum kit, but directing the group with a strong sensitivity to the horn players in the lead, and the pianist who joins the whole thing together – really creating a great sense of flow and warmth that balances the whole thing perfectly! Dado Maroni's at the piano, making for a key anchor in the album's sound – and the record really sparkles with flugelhorn lines from Bert Joris, who hits a range somewhere between trumpet and trombone in his phrasing – often with a bit more bite than other players on the instrument. Roman Schwaller plays tenor, Thomas Stabenow handles bass, and titles include "Sno Pease", "For The Time Being", "Ready Set Go", "Bolivia", and "La Mesha". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
