Spacey disco, very much in the same mode as work by Alec Constandinos from the same time. No surprise, then, that the group does a cover of Alec's "Accidental Lover" – complete with strings, keyboards, and sex sounds – and they also do a pretty smooth club take on Jean Michel Jarre's "Oxygene", Vangelis' "Pulstar", and the classic moogy number "Magic Fly". The notes say "additional recording at Sigma Sound", with mixing by Tom Moulton – and we can't say that the whole thing was recorded in Philly, but it's also the Philly touches that really make it work. Joy & Pain
Capitol, 1980. Very Good
Classic modern soul from the legendary Frankie Beverly! The record's perhaps one of their best remembered – most likely for the killer cut "Joy & Pain", which has a great hook that's been sampled many times over the years. The record also features the wonderful "Southern ... LP, Vinyl record album
