Original Recordings – Holiday For Trombones/One Of Those Songs

CD (Item 474947) Liberty/Rhubarb Recordings, 1967/1968 — Condition: New Copy

Very groovy work from Trombones Unlimited – 2 of their late 60s Liberty albums, back to back on a single CD! First up is Holiday For Trombones – a hip set based around far-off themes and travel tunes – played in an upbeat, swinging way with plenty of trombones! The 'bones are handled by Frank Rosolino and Mike Barone – and arrangements are by Tommy Oliver and the great George Tipton – all in a sunny, jazzy, upbeat sort of way. Music is equal parts pop and jazz – a bit like Chet Baker's work with the Mariachi Brass, with a similar focus on the lead horns, and lively work from the supporting group of players. Titles include "England Swings", "Night In Israel", "Jamaica Farewell", "Norwegian Wood", "Holiday For Trombones", "Lisbon Antigua", and "Isle Of Capri". One Of Those Songs is more groovy work from the Trombones Unlimited team of Frank Rosolino and Mike Barone – working together here in a bone-heavy gliding style – and vamping along to some pretty great 60s pop arrangements! The style's less jazz than pop instrumental, with a focus on trombone – but the overall sound is still pretty great, and there seems to be a very light bit of backing vocals on a few tunes – almost in a Sunshine Pop mode. Arrangements are by Mike Barone and Tommy Oliver – and titles include "Manhattan Spiritual", "Night Train", "A Silly Millimeter Longer", "Ode To Billie Joe", "String Of Pearls", and "One Of Those Songs".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
