Two sidelong epic live recordings of Trane from the early 60s, capturing him at the height of his explorations of stretching standards to their limits, but before he really delved into the out side. Side 1 features an almost 20 minute rendition of "Bye Bye Blackbird" and side 2 is nealry as long a reading of "Traneing In", both by the classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimme Garrison and Elvin Jones, recorded in europe in 1962.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Brilliant work from Coltrane – recorded in the 60s, but not issued until the late 70s, and only then, not properly in print until the release of this great package! The material is classic Coltrane Quartet sessions – with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones working with Trane ... CD

Pablo, Early 60s/1977. Used 2CD
One of the best posthumous releases by the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – and a set that really captures the group at a perfect moment – when they were really beginning to stretch out a lot, yet still in a style that was mostly inside! The material was recorded in Berlin and ... CD

The classic quartet of John Coltrane, certainly the classic quartet of the 60s jazz scene and perhaps the classic jazz quartet of all time, compiled in one box set with all of their studio recordings! The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session ... CD

Blue Train
Blue Note, 1957. Used
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ... CD

Prestige (Japan), 1957. Used
Classic early John Coltrane for Prestige – less a bold statement as a leader than a strong batch of blowing session-styled tracks that show how well Coltrane could hold his own with more established players! The groups on the set vary from track to track – and feature players that ... CD

Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used
Angular modernism from George Russell – a record that's still strongly preoccupied with his interest in modes and tones, but which also manages to swing nicely as well! The group here is a sextet – with Eric Dolphy making a great appearance on alto and bass clarinet – alongside ... CD

Let's Cook!
Contemporary/OJC, 1957. Used
Well, if you've ever heard Barney play guitar, you know that he doesn't always cook – or at least not as hotly as other players – but this album is a nice batch of tracks that goes way beyond Kessel's usual uptight sound. Most of the cuts are very long, and they feature open-ended jam ... CD
