Cannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco

One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group with brother Nat on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums – and a young Bobby Timmons on piano, really cooking things up with tremendous drive, energy, and a sense of the groove! Titles include a great workout on Timmons' classic "This Here", plus originals "You Got It" and Spontaneous Combustion", and a great version of "Hi Fly". Soul jazz at its best, by one of the groups who gave the genre its name in the first place! (OJC pressing.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Capitol, Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Classic funkiness with David Axelrod producing, and lots of funky electric piano by Joe Zawinul. Recorded live, when the group was at their best, and with 2 LPs worth of great originals – many by Zawinul. Titles include "Alto Sex", "Lonesome Stranger", "Wild-Cat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lush Side Of Cannonball
EmArcy, Late 50s. Very Good
A wonderfully mellow set of ballads recorded by Cannonball, with orchestral backings by Richard Hayman. The album's typical of the kind of "all over the map" approach that Mercury used during Cannon's early years – before he'd settled down into the one-man soul jazz factory he ... Fantasy, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! Riverside, 1961. Very Good
A funky vibes classic – and a landmark set from Detroit vibist Johnny Lytle! Columbia, 1967. Very Good+
A pretty tasty little album from Don Ellis – his first funky outing for Columbia Records, and a groundbreaking batch of big band funk tracks! The set's quite different from some of Don's earlier recordings – in that it's a bit less academic, and has a focus more on a strong and ... LP, Vinyl record album
