A killer set from Phyrework – a rare second album recorded right after their sublime debut for Mercury – but only issued here for the first time ever! The groove is every bit as great as before – the tightest, most sophisticated side of ensemble funk at the end of the 70s – with the kind of jazzy overtones you might hear from a group like Breakwater or Chocolate Milk – and production that's equally smooth as well! Things are balanced wonderfully between mellow groovers and more upbeat numbers – and throughout, the group manage to work at a level that's way beyond too-familiar funky soul modes – lots of rich depth to their instrumentation, and nicely undersung vocals that slide right in with the rhythms.
