The Crusaders are really going strong at this point – in near-hit status, almost acting as the Steely Dan of LA jazz. The sound is certainly slicker than before, but in a way that's actually pretty darn nice – as Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, and Larry Carlton come together with effortless ease – dipping, turning, twisting, and still hitting a nice groove on the best tunes. Tracks include "Nite Crawler", "Feel It", "River Rat", "Free As The Wind", and "Sweet N Sour". (Cover & label have a bit of marker.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

First Cuckoo
MCA, 1975. Very Good+
Key proof that Deodato kept on making great records after leaving CTI Records – and in a way, the kind of set that allowed him a bit more freedom to grow than some of his contemporaries! The vibe here is a bit tighter than before, but in a way that makes many numbers even funkier – ... LP, Vinyl record album

French Cookin'
Argo, 1963. Very Good
Groovy little record that has this funky tenor giant playing a bunch of tracks with a Frenchy feel to them. Budd's joined by Hank Jones on piano, plus Kenny Burrell on guitar, and a nice Latin rhythm section that includes Joe Venuto on vibes and marimba and Willie Rodriguez on percussion. The ... Pressure Sensitive
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good+
Classic bit of 70's fusion, played by Ronnie on tenor and flute, and with a group that includes some excellent keyboard work by Joe Sample. The highlight of the record is the big sample cut "Tidal Wave", but it also includes the great groover "Always There", which was covered a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mr Shing-A-Ling
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good-
Funky funky Lou Donaldson – and one of the first albums to feature the tight drum work of Idris Muhammad behind Lou's horn – so early, in fact, that Muhammad's listed here on the label as Leo Morris, which was his original name! The group also features Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Jimmy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Getz/Gilberto
Verve, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Erotic Moods
Paul Winley, Early 70s/1978. Near Mint-
Wild and mysterious stuff! This album is sort of a repackaged version of the legendary Harlem Underground album – a great lost funk album from the mid-70s that listed George Benson as a player in the group, but one that Benson claims that he never played on! The time of this release ... LP, Vinyl record album
