An excellent mix of soul and jazz funk from Bernard "Pretty" Purdie! By the time of this 1971 recording, Purdie had played on a host of classic soul and jazz sides from the 60s – and that long tradition of work is drawn on strongly in the set, which features guest appearances from the likes of Harold Wheeler, Blue Mitchell, Gil Scott-Heron, Chuck Rainey, Cornell Dupree, Seldon Powell, and Norma Jenkins. About half the tracks are instrumental versions of soul tracks – and a few feature vocals, either by Purdie, Norman Matlock, or Gil Scott-Heron. Heron does a very hip track called "Artificialness", and other tracks include "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", "Modern Jive", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "It's Too Late", and the mad mad number "Funky Mozart", which has a great break! © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
