Ronnie Foster — Cheshire Cat ... CD 13.99

Wicked keyboards from Ronnie Foster – and a set that really steps forward from his previous two Blue Note albums! The record really has Ronnie moving into a more rounded soul space – singing along with his keyboards, in ways that may well be aimed at making Foster the next Stevie Wonder – although still with some of the hipper, quirkier touches that make his music so great! The lineup of players is very top shelf – almost more of a CTI/Kudu session, with George Benson and Joe Beck on guitar, Mtume on congas, and lots of heavy bass from William Allen and Gary King. Foster wrote all the cuts – save for a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Tuesday Heartbreak" – and titles include "Funky Motion", which was covered by Roy Ayers – plus "Cheshire Cat", "Fly Away", "Heartless", and "Like a Child". (Original pressing. Cover has a cutout hole & some light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

It's About Time
Blue Note, 1985. Near Mint-
The leaders are sporting some serious 80s fashions on the cover – but the record's got a really solid sort of sound – and an approach that strongly shows the growth in both players since their earlier years at Blue Note! Blue Note, 1958. Near Mint-
Bud Powell's 5th album for Blue Note – and a nicely kicking trio session, recorded with Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Bud's playing in a very minor groove here, with a lot of nice dark moments amidst his firey piano solos – and the team of Chambers and Taylor really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Vibes
Jazzland, 1960. Good+
Excellent grooves that mix together vibes and organ! This is one of the early albums cut by soul jazz vibist Johnny Lytle – and although it's more stripped-down than later work, it's still got a nice groove, and a feel that's quite different from work by other jazz vibes players at the time. ... Gilded Hawk
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good-
Tremendous work from Coleman Hawkins – a sublime "with strings" session from the 50s, and one of Bean's greatest albums from the decade! The setting is quite different than other sets with Hawk on tenor – soft strings from Glen Osser, cascading beautifully and gently – ... LP, Vinyl record album
