Open Strings
LP (Item 540540) MPS, 1972 — Condition: Used
Open strings, and a really wonderful sound – one of Jean-Luc Ponty's excellent early recordings for MPS – much more laidback and flowing than some of his later sessions in the US! Side one features one extended track – "Flipping", in three parts – a sweet modal number that really builds up nicely, thanks to rhythms from Joachim Kuhn on piano, Peter Warren on bass, and Oliver Johnson on drums – augmented by some wilder guitar work by the always-great Philip Catherine! Ponty's violin is never too overdone – played with a nice sense of energy that slides out wonderfully in the long space of the track – and finds a warm yet somber tone in the extended "Open Strings", on the flip. The set closes with the well-titled "Sad Ballad". (US pressing. Cover has a cutout notch, some wear, and some tape and peeling on the spine.) © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
