CD (Item 436764) Prestige/Bluesville/OJC, 1960 -- Condition: New Copy

The second Prestige album from Al Smith -- a great little singer with a sublime blend of blues, jazz, and soul! Smith really came on strong at the start of his career, but then dropped out of sight pretty quickly after this one -- and we're really not sure why, given what a great little record it is! The style here is even looser and more laidback than the first -- with a fair bit of soul-jazz styled instrumentation, played in a late night mellow mode by a small combo that includes Robert Banks on organ, King Curtis on tenor, and Jimmy Lee on guitar. A few tracks are nicely longish, and really loosen things up a lot -- allowing Smith to hit modes that few other singers of the time were doing. Titles include "I Can't Make It By Myself", "I've Been Mistreated", "You're A Sweetheart", "The Bells", "Ride On Midnight Special", and the hard-rocking "Don't Worry Bout Me". (CD case has a small cutout notch.)  © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
