Nate Wooley's always got sounds that hold our attention – but he's almost even more compelling than usual here, in the company of drummer Paul Lytton – whose approach makes for a record that really bristles with invention! Lytton's got an approach to the kit that's a bit like some of his electronics – crisp and crackly, with these continued bursts that really charge up the tunes – leading Wooley's trumpet to equally staccato expressions. The bass of Christian Weber holds the whole thing together, with kind of a gentle undercurrent at times – and titles include "La Grande Mort", "Nickel Eyes", "Moribund", and "Pushing Up Daisies". (Limited to 300 copies!)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Quite a nice little album from Pharoah – the kind of session we always overlooked when we were digging for Impulse titles, and which we're now going back to, and almost appreciating more than the classic ones! The album's a quartet session – recorded live, of course – with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Genius, pure genius – and one of the few key sides by Warne Marsh as a leader! The album follows on Marsh's appearance with Lee Konitz on an earlier Atlantic album, but it really breaks free from the Konitz mode – and has an open, laidback sound that is instantly captivating – ... One of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from the legendary Phil Cohran – a previously-unissued performance from 1993, and one that's every bit as wonderful as his rare albums of the late 60s! The set was recorded at the planetarium in Chicago – and for the date, Cohran comes ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a stunning soundtrack that began a rich legacy of jazz scores in France! Sharp-edged John Coltrane at his best – a record that we'd rank right up there with Love Supreme, and which is a key transition point in Coltrane's musical ideas! There's a very strong edge to Coltrane's tone here – and even on the mellower ballads, he plays with a sound not always ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gonzo grooves from cosmic physician Dr. John! This is one of the trippiest of Dr. John's early albums, and a really messed-up mix of New Orleans R&B, 60s funk, and psychedelic influences. Side one of the LP features a number of shorter funky cuts – like "Loop Garoo" and "C ... LP, Vinyl record album
