Howard McGhee and his trumpet team up with pianist Phineas Newborn, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and Shelley Manne on drums for this great early 60s session. The record features the McGhee original "Demon Chase" and two Teddy Edwards songs, "Sunset Eyes" and his salute to McGhee "Maggie's Back in Town." McGhee himself pays tribute to one of his favorite trumpet players, Clifford Brown by doing Brown's "Brownie Speaks." Other titles include "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," "Willow Weep for Me" and "Summertime."  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Brother Red
Prestige, 1964. New Copy
Nice double-length CD that brings together tuff soul jazz tenor tracks culled from some mid 60s sessions that Red Holloway cut with Brother Jack McDuff. A stone classic from New Orleans reedman Pony Poindexter – a set that's steeped in tradition, but also has a groovy feel too – and a date that features Pony on both alto and soprano sax! The latter instrument is especially nice, played with echoes of earlier Crescent City modes, but ... CD

Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1980. New Copy
A totally wonderful little record – not just a funky 70s soundtrack, but an excellent jazz outing as well – thanks to the talents of Hubert Laws on flute and Earl Klugh on guitar! Patrick Williams wrote and arranged the whole set – and he merges his jazzier roots with some of his ... CD

Chicago Theme
CTI/Wounded Bird, 1975. New Copy
One of Hubert Laws' funkiest records for CTI – recorded with a full group funky style that's plenty darn great, and a lot harder-hitting than some of Hubert's more laidback sessions for the label! Arrangements are by Bob James and Laws – working here with a large batch of players who ... CD

Crying Song
CTI/Wounded Bird, 1969. New Copy
A landmark record – the first album that flutist Hubert Laws cut for CTI, and the beginning of a very important partnership with the label! The record is a sublime exploration of sound and space – very different than Laws' 60s Latin sides for Atlantic, and handled in a baroque mode ... CD

Say It With Silence
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1978. New Copy
Nothing too silent here, as the set's filled with the kind of soulful fusion grooves we'd expect from Hubert Laws in the 70s! The album's a real standout in his Columbia catalog – a perfectly balanced set that features plenty of great work from Hubert on flute, amidst arrangements that also ... CD

Trance Hypothesis
Delmark, 2013. New Copy
Maybe the trippiest album we've ever heard from guitarist Fareed Haque – but you've probably already guessed that from the image on the cover! The set's filled with all the kind of cool sounds you'd expect – and is almost a throwback to the great run of jazz-meets Eastern-meets funk ... CD
