A trio of modern talents, working beautifully together on a set of extended live tracks! The group features guitar from Peter Bernstein, Hammond from Larry Goldings, and drums from Bill Stewart – coming together in ways that remind us of the hipper side of 60s organ combos – those moments when Grant Green and Larry Young really opened things up with a long-flowing groove! There's still a nice undercurrent of soul in the mix, but the rhythms are relatively free and unfettered too – moving forth with energy that might be called modal by some, but which is even less constricted by a simple tag like that – more just pure, beautiful waves of sound from both the organ and guitar. Titles include "The Danger Zone", "Milestones", "Just A Thought", "Molto Molto", and "Chant".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Trumpeter Ryan Kisor's got a great partner in the frontline here – alto player Sherman Irby, whose angular tones really give the record an edge! As we love in Irby's own sessions, there's a mix here of soulful and modern that's really wonderful – kind of an open flow on the horns, but ... CD

A great set from tenorist Ian Hendrickson Smith – a player you might know from his work with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings! Smith was in the Dap-Kings for a good part of the oughties, but has really opened up as a jazz musician too – and here, he really cooks in the wonderful ... CD

Forget the "punk" in the group's name, and just focus on the "bop" – as the quintet have a nicely angular sort of energy, one that's definitely modern, but which certainly owes a lot to the sharp changes of jazz generations gone by! The instrumentation really draws a lot ... CD

An ultra-hip set of soul jazz from 70s Detroit – recorded back in the day by saxophonist Sam Sanders, but never issued at the time! The album's got this wonderfully warm, open sort of vibe – a quality that's kind of like an indie take on the CTI mode of the time, but much more relaxed ... CD

A damn great early moment from David Sanborn – a record that really shows the reedman at his best – working some tight solos over soulful backings in the same 70s manner as Tom Scott or Wilton Felder! Like both of those players, David's got the chops to step out in front of the ... CD
