An excellent album from funky guitarist Wilbert Longmire – probably his best, in our opinion! The album was recorded in LA with some very hip arrangements from Joe Sample – at the head of a largeish soul jazz group that includes usual suspects from the LA scene, like Paul Humphrey, George Bohannon, Anthony Ortega, and Wilton Felder – plus a young Leon Spencer on organ, who turns out some excellent solos with a very groovy touch! Includes a totally great version of James Brown's "Give It Up or Turn it Loose" – done with a nice little kick – plus takes of "This Guy's In Love With You", "Galveston", "Revolution", "Theme From The Fox", and "Scarborough Fair". (Cover has some light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The group features Swedish piano giant Bent Axen, plus a rhythm section that includes Erik Moseholm on bass and Jorn Elniff on drums. Like most Dolphy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1974. Near Mint-
We have to admit we've always been somewhat dismissive of Merl Saunders 70s records, perhaps because of the hippy association we have with these bay area recordings. But ultimately there's at least a little bit of funk peeking through on any of his Fantasy recordings, which gets a nice helping ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sessions like this are proof that Jimmy was one of the most fantastic organ players ever – as his work with large arrangements (supplied here by Claus Ogerman) always seems to groove better than his work with small combos. His sound is impeccable, and he soars ahead of the rest of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
