CD (Item 516903) Knitting Factory, 1976/1977 — Condition: New Copy

2 stunners – back to back on one CD! "JJD (Johnny Just Drop)" is a great live track recorded in 1977 at Fela's own Kalakuta Republic – and it's a great number that begins casually, with Fela talking a bit, introducing the conga player, before the band goes wild on the cut, an extended groover in triple-time that's also an attack on the way that Africans abroad can lose a sense of their own cultural value. Unnecessary Begging may not be the most famous of Fela albums, but it's got some great bits! The track "Unnecessary Begging" takes up all of side one of the original LP, and it begins with this amazingly spooky sax solo that starts out spare, then snakes through the building rhythm lines laid down by Tony Allen. "No Burudei" is took up side two, and it's a pumped-up groover with fast guitar and bass, rolling along in a classic Africa 70 groove, while the rest of the band slowly joins into the fray! (Nice gatefold cardboard sleeve.)  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
