One of the most magical records ever from this legendary group – a set that swings as hard and soulfully as some of their previous sessions, yet also has a sharper, more modern vibe as well! Of course, this latter aspect is no surprise – once you realize that a young Grachan Moncur is on trombone – adding his hip horn to the wonderful frontline of Benny Golson on tenor and Art Farmer on trumpet and flugelhorn. And given that the rhythm group also features Harold Mabern on piano, you can bet there's a freshness here that can't be beat – a sound and energy that's kept this one at the top of our stack for many many years. Mabern and Moncur contribute two of the best tracks – "Richie's Dilemma" and "Sonny's Back" – and other titles include "Whisper Not", "Tonk", "Rue Prevail", and "Ruby My Dear".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Bird Feathers
Prestige (Japan), 1957. New Copy
A really great title for this classic late 50s set – as the record showcases a host of young alto players who've all come up in the generation of Charlie Parker – but who are each bringing their own sense of style to the instrument! There's hardly any "bird feathers" here ... CD

Inner Feelings
Vistone/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy
A crazy bit of funk from drummer Roy Porter – a player who first rose to fame during the LA bop years of the late 40s, but who sounds even hipper here in the 70s! The album's got a madly skittish approach to funk – one that's highly rhythmic, but often in unconventional ways – ... CD

Stone Flute
Embryo (Japan), 1970. New Copy
Stone flute, or stoned flute, the album's got a really laidback feel – a sound that's very open-ended, and quite different from some of the crossover classics Herbie Mann was cutting a few short years before! The record's got the darkly brooding feel of some of his other work on the Vortex ... CD

Strata East/Mosaic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 6CD
CD...$101.99 102.00
A really amazing set of work from tenorist Clifford Jordan – a player who first rose to fame in the hardbop scene of the late 50s, but who moved into tremendous new territory with these Strata East recordings of the late 60s and early 70s! Jordan was a Chicago contemporary of players like ... CD

Sonic Healing Ministries, 2001. New Copy
A raw, live set from Chicago saxophonist David Boykin – but a great little record that really reminds us of a classic 60s session on ESP! Boykin's reeds are wonderful throughout – filled with the depth of soul we might expect from Kalaparusha or Albert Ayler – and set up here in ... CD

Hazel Boykin – Big & Fine
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2004. New Copy
A great lost performance from David Boykin's Expanse group – one of the boldest forces in Chicago underground jazz a few years back! The lineup here is great – with Boykin on tenor, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Josh Abrams on bass, James Baker on piano, and Myron Cherry on drums – ... CD

Three Blind Mice/Think (Japan), 1970. New Copy
A great album from one of the greatest Japanese reedmen of the 70s – a player who's not that well known on our shores, but who served up a run of great little records like this at the time! Kosuke Mine has this sound that's sharp, but extremely fluid too – a way of running fast with ... CD

Mommy What's A Depression?
Crockett Gallery, 2013. New Copy
CD...$6.99 12.99
Maybe the strongest, boldest album we've ever heard from Alison Crockett so far – a record that has the singer bursting forth with a sense of power that really blows away her previous albums! The album's a great reminder of Crockett's place in the soul underground over the past decade or so ... CD

Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy
It's easy to feel nice with grooves this great – a sweet array of really rare soul 45s from the late 60s and early 70s – each and every one a mighty funky nugget! Even in an era where we've been getting plenty of rare funk reissued round these parts, there's still plenty more to ... CD
