Dave Brubeck — Jazz Impressions Of Japan ... CD 3.99

An overlooked gem in the Dave Brubeck Columbia catalog – and a very hip set of "Eastern" tinged tracks! The album's theme is obvious from the title – as Dave pens a set of tracks reflecting his experiences on recent visits to Japan – but the sound and the style moves way past the simple approach that might have been used, into territory that has the exotic feel of early 60s work by Yusef Lateef, Horace Silver, and some of the other hardbop-exotics around at the time. Of course, a big factor in the success of the record is the crisp and willowy alto of Paul Desmond – working here to create snakey lines that really support the mood of the tracks. Titles include "Osaka Blues", "Koto Song", "Zen is When", "Tokyo Traffic", and "Toki's Theme". (2 eye mono pressing. Cover has some staining and waviness along the opening, with another small stain and a rip at the opening on the back.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Ellington Uptown
Columbia, 1952. Very Good
One of Duke Ellington's standout sides for Columbia – a strong recording that revisits many of the best elements of his earlier work, and offers up some more sophisticated scoring for the 50s – thanks to extended track length in the LP generation! A classic collection of material from Count Basie – with some sides from 1942, a few from 1946, and a few great ones from the revival years at the start of the 50s! We love these last ones the best – and titles include classic readings of "Little Pony", "Beaver ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coldwater Flat
Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A brilliant pairing of the Three Sounds trio with the larger arrangements of reedman Oliver Nelson – easily one of the most soulful bandleaders of the 60s, and a talent who really helps open up the trio's groove! The piano of Gene Harris is nice and sharp – played with a soulful sock ... LP, Vinyl record album
