CD (Item 465559) ESP, 1968 — Condition: New Copy

A lost treasure from the 60s vaults of ESP Records – a session that's easily as great as any of the better-known dates issued by the label decades ago! The CD features unheard recordings from trumpeter Norman Howard, who worked early with Albert Ayler, and altoist Joe Phillips – both relatively obscure talents who graced the 60s avant scene briefly, but are very under-represented on record. The session's a quartet date – with Howard and Phillips out front in the lead, soloing together in classic ESP freedom – supported by loose rhythms from bassist Walter Cliff and percussionist Corney Millsap. There's a starkness here that reminds us a bit of some of the Charles Tyler or Sonny Murray albums on ESP – and titles include "Time & Units", "NxJx", "Haunted", "Burn Baby Burn", "Bug Out", and "The Sound From There".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
