An obscure set by Lockjaw – a recording that features his tenor backed by the Shirley Scott organ trio – with George Duvivier on bass and Art Edgehill on drums. Tracks are short, and mostly standards, but they're played with that gutbuckety sound that Davis and Scott had when working together – almost tighter than their work at Prestige, and with a sound that was strongly in keeping with the groove they were laying down in the clubs. Titles include "Afternoon In A Doghouse", "Fine & Dandy", "Just One More Chance", "Night & Day", "Snowfall", and "This Time The Dream's On Me". (Original multi-colored bar label pressing with deep groove. Cover has wide clear tape on the top seam.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Let's Have A Ball
Roulette, Late 50s. Near Mint-
A playfully swinging set from trombonist Tyree Glenn – working here in a nicely offbeat style that also includes a bit of vocals as well! Glenn's got a great way with the muted trombone – working the end with a wah wah approach that's certainly got its roots in trad jazz, but which ... LP, Vinyl record album

Basie (aka E=MC2)
Roulette, 1957. Very Good
One of THE seminal Basie albums of all time – and a masterful pairing between the Count and arranger Neal Hefti! Hefti has an amazing ear for the Basie groove, and he works here to re-fit the overall sound of the group with a tighter, more fluid approach – one that ensured that they'd ... LP, Vinyl record album

Matadores Meet The Bull
Roulette, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A strange one for Sonny Stitt – but also a real gem! The album has Sonny, who'd been working for the Roost/Roulette label, coming together with other jazz players in the same boat, plus Latin musicians who were recording for the related Tico label. Moishe Levy never made such a good talent ... LP, Vinyl record album

Basie At Birdland
Roulette, 1961. Very Good-
A killer set from Count Basie – recorded during the height of his years at Roulette! The back cover of the record proclaims that "Basie Is Back Home" – clearly a bit by Birdland to lay claim to being the Count's home address, which is a bit of a challenge to his KC roots! ... LP, Vinyl record album

Basie Plays Hefti
Roulette, Late 50s. Very Good
Tremendous work from one of the greatest pairings in 50s jazz – the crack later group of Count Basie and the amazing arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti later went onto greater fame as a 60s soundtrack composer, but back in the day him and Basie were an incredible team together ... LP, Vinyl record album

Message From Birdland
Roulette, 1959. Very Good
Put aside your reservations about Maynard Ferguson, because this is a very hip little record – one of Maynard's excellent early sessions for Roulette Records, and like the rest, done with a group that's overflowing with top-shelf players! Breakfast Dance & Barbecue? Our stomachs are growling already! Maynard '62
Roulette, 1962. Very Good+
Think what you want about Maynard, during his early years, he really knew how to surround himself with some hip players! Such is definitely the case on this set, an edgey big band set with some great solo work by Don Menza, Slide Hampton, Lanny Morgan, and others, plus some tight drum work by ... LP, Vinyl record album
