CD (Item 362457) Soul Brother (UK), 1970s — Condition: New Copy

Some of the most righteous soul jazz ever recorded – and a brilliant collection of work by Gary Bartz, one that spans the full scope of his classic 70s recordings! Bartz first came to prominence as a soulful alto player in the Max Roach group of the late 60s – but by the time of the 70s, he'd really exploded as an artist – working in a rich style that was uniquely his own, and drawing equally from funk, fusion, jazz, and soul to get his message across! The set shows an amazing evolution in Bartz's style as the decade moved on – initially recording in a tribally rhythmic style with vocalist Andy Bey, then moving into a more spacious modal soul jazz style, then hitting a tighter funky fusion approach with Larry Mizell, but also taking the time to record a few more laidback and soulful tunes in San Francisco, including one gem with vocals by a young Syreeta! A wonderful overview of Gary's rich rich 70s catalog – with tracks from his recordings for Milestone, Prestige, Capitol, and Catalyst – a dozen tracks that include "I've Known Rivers", "Sea Gypsy", "Ju Ju Man", "Music Is My Sanctuary", "Celestial Blues", "Uhuru Sasa", "Drinking Song", "Dr Follow's Dance", "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "My Funny Valentine", "Carnaval De L'Esprit", and "Gentle Smiles".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
