Great Jazz Piano Of Phineas Newborn Jr

4.60 5

Wonderfully romping work from Phineas Newborn – and a great showcase for the harder side of his sound on the piano, something that didn't always show up on his RCA albums of the 50s! The style here has plenty of bluesy overtones – not in a cliched soul jazz way, but in an earthy mode that's natural and spontaneous – thanks, possibly, to some excellent rhythm accompaniment from the team of Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, who work with Phineas on side two of the record. Side one features Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Milt Turner – and titles include the originals "Theme For Basie" and "New Blues" – plus versions of "This Here", "Way Out West", "Four", and Bud Powell's "Celia". (70s pressing. Cover has a stain on the bottom inch, with some flaking on the seam.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

While My Lady Sleeps
RCA, 1957. Very Good
A rare "with orchestra" outing from pianist Phineas Newborn – one that has his gentle keys out front of larger backings by Dennis Farnon – all cast in the kind of dreamy mode you might expect from the title! Yet while the whole thing's certainly got a late night feel, Newborn' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Living Legend
Contemporary, 1976. Very Good
An excellent 70s side from Art Pepper – recorded with a West Coast rhythm section that includes Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden, and Shelly Manne! Lionel Hampton
Contemporary, 1955. Very Good+
An obscure Contemporary Records release from Lionel Hampton – originally recorded in Paris, with long tracks that are similar to his best Verve work – and a group that includes Walter Williams on trumpet, James Cleveland on trombone, Clifford Scott on tenor, and Claude Bolling on piano! Surprisingly nice stuff – especially considering that the album was one in a string of Previn piano sessions for Contemporary – all based around Broadway themes as part of the success of his My Fair Lady date with Shelly Manne! Sunday Jazz A La Lighthouse Vol 1
Contemporary, 1953. Very Good
One of the earliest sets issued under the name of the Lighthouse All-Stars – that hip assemblage of west coast players headed by bassist Howard Rumsey – hardly a household name on his own, but well-remembered for all the great work done at this famous club! Contemporary, 1958. Very Good
This album was the 7th in the Contemporary series of "Shelly Manne & His Men", but it's also easily the best, and features some of the most exciting playing of any of Manne's groups. Another standout set from Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars – the kind of group who should have been a gimmicky way to promote his nightclub, but who actually managed to cut some of the best LA records of the time!
