Warm, soulful fusion from Steve Swallow – one of his most full-realized albums for ECM in years! There's no tricks or gimmicks here, no too-surprising turns – and instead, Swallow works in a mode that's surprisingly soul-based at most points – yet handled in ways that are quite far from the too-smooth fusion modes that were hitting the mainstream at the time! Instead, the record's almost a throwback to the most laidback electric modes of the 70s – flowing easily, and opening up in these gentle grooves that are mighty nice – thanks to help from a lineup that includes Steve Kuhn on piano, Carla Bley on organ, Karen Mantler on keyboards, Hiram Bullock on guitar, Gary Burton on vibes, and John Scofield on guitar – all players hip enough to keep things from ever sounding cloying.
