When these guys say "stage band", they aren't kidding – as the group's got so many members, there's barely room left on the stage for the instruments! That doesn't stop the record from being plenty darn funky, though – as the sound is right, tight, and outta site – every bit as great as the group's famous funky 45s, and with a similarly hard Texas take on deep funk! The album's got some wonderful covers of famous soul hits, plus a few hip originals – and there's some great moments that show the group hitting a more ambitious jazzy feel, one that recalls some of the hipness of the Chicago sound of The Pharoahs! Titles include "Al's Tune", "Scorpio", "Masquerade", "Walk On By", "All Praises", "Thank You", "Do Your Thing", and "To All The Beautiful Black Women".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Don't Be Cruel
MCA/Get On Down, 1988. New Copy (reissue)
Breakout brilliance from Bobby Brown – and actually not his first solo record – but it’s certainly the first one to really show the world he could stand so strongly on his own strongly after leaving New Edition! Given the tight production from LA & Babyface, among others, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Poison
MCA/Get On Down, 1990. New Copy (reissue)
A second chapter for boy band 80s soul! After Bobby Brown set off on his own, the remaining three members of New Edition decided to remain a group and give it a go, and far from being a sad collection of the leftover members, their debut album was actually one of many successful New Jack Swing ... Mind Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A great little live album – one that's quite different than Gil Scott-Heron's double-length set for Arista – and a set that serves as a key bridge between his early protest work and his emerging vocal sensibility! The set features a fair bit of longer spoken passages – but unlike ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtom, 1972. New Copy (reissue)

Winter In America
Strata East/TVT, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
A beautiful jazzy classic, and perhaps Gil Scott-Heron's most perfectly realized album ever! The record has a completely sophisticated jazzy approach – one that's miles ahead from even Gil's previous work on Flying Dutchman, and which shows him to be one of the most distinctive and emotive ... Brockingtons
Today, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
A really weird little soul set from Julius Brockington and his wife – and one of the most messed-up albums on the always-crazy Today label! The sound here is kind of a more soul-based take on the mode explored by Julius on his albums United Chair and Sophisticated Funk – one that takes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Westbound/4 Men With Beards, 1970. New Copy (reissue)
One of the darkest records to ever come out of the Detroit soul scene! As you might guess from the title, the album is Funkadelic's first – and it's a swirling mass of psychedelic guitars, echoey drums, and bass-heavy riffing, all topped off by the band's harmony vocals, which sound like a ... Amazing stuff – and arguably the greatest early Funkadelic album ever! The set moves past the simple fuzzy style of the group's debut, and the overly-stoned sound of Free Your Mind – and rockets into a heady funk style that's filled with sly social commentary and an incredibly dark ... A blistering little set from Funkadelic – one that features the return of Eddie Hazel's guitar, finely honed to the leaner, more soul-based sound of the group in the mid 70s! The title is prophetic, as the group are really "standing on the verge" here – working hard to ... LP, Vinyl record album
