A rare bit of hardcore poetry by the Watts Prophets – the legendary LA group who were kind of a west coast answer to the Last Poets! The group have a sound that's as striking as the best early work by The Last Poets – a hard-hitting blend of poetry, rhythms, and righteous energy – all recorded in a style that's stripped down, proud, angry, and in stark contrast to the rest of the work coming out in the soul music industry at the time. The album's not only important as a precursor to the west coast hip hop style, but it's a heck of a powerful statement that's as chilling now as it was back in 1971! Titles include "Amerikkka", "Dem N_gger Ain't Playing", "A Pimp", "Hello N_ggers", and "The Prostitute".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

ARC, 1968. New Copy (reissue)
A very hip tribute to Otis Redding – one that has The Majestics hitting hard in an instrumental mode that's almost like some of the Mar-Keys or Bar-Kays work on Stax from the mid 60s – tight drums on the bottom, Hammond and guitar grooving in the middle, and some occasional horns ... Dakar, 1972. New Copy (reissue)
A killer bit of early funk from the great Hamilton Bohannon – and quite possibly his greatest album ever – a really unique approach to funky rhythms, with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! People, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
A killer-diller bit of essential funk – the only full album cut by Maceo with James Brown production! The set's got Maceo coming back strongly into the JB fold, with a fierce array of funky cuts that kick it every bit as hard as the best JBs work of the time. No surprise, the JBs are ... Mack (soundtrack, 2nd version)
ALA, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
An obscure second soundtrack for The Mack – one that's not nearly as well known as the classic Motown score by Willie Hutch, but which features some great work from Eugene McDaniels – and funky backings from Alan Silvestri! Eugene sings sweetly on the title theme "In The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Reprise/4 Men With Beards, 1975. New Copy (reissue)
Damn great work from Allen Toussaint – a record that was cut at a time when he'd really made his way into the mainstream of American music, yet could still come across with a hard New Orleans groove! The title cut, "Southern Nights", is a perfect illustration of this fact – ... LP, Vinyl record album
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP
Killer funky stuff! Dean Rudland put together this tasty set of lost funk tracks from the many labels currently making up the BGP/Ace catalog – and the groove runs through 15 tracks of hard heavy soul, fuzzy funky instrumentals, and slammin groovy grooves. A few tracks on the set might be ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA/4 Men With Beards, 1971. New Copy
Classic RCA work from the great Nina Simone – and an album that definitely shows Nina hitting more of the soul spectrum than some of her folk and jazz work of the 60s! The set's got these wonderful arrangements from Harold Wheeler – a bit electric, and done in a way that takes familiar ... LP, Vinyl record album
