Bailador
CD (Item 590203) Decca (France), 2010 — Condition: New Copy
A great setting for reedman Michel Portal – one that really has him changing up his style a lot, and borrowing some energy from the contemporary Blue Note generation! The group on the set features trumpet from Ambrose Akimusire and guitar from Lionel Loueke – both players who really give the record a vibrant sort of energy, and seem to set a new sort of fire to Portal's work on bass clarinet, alto, and soprano sax! Rhythms are great, too – driven by drums from Jack DeJohnette, who has this skittish style at times that really breaks things out – almost kind of a global influence, with lots more flavors than you might usually get from Portal. Overall, the record's one of his most life-affirming in years – and other players include Bojan Z on piano and keyboards, and Scott Colley on bass. Tunes include "Dolce", "Bailador", "Cuba Si Cuba No", "One On One", "Alto Blues", and "Tutti No Hysterique". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
