This One's For Dinah
CD (Item 603823) Blue Note/EMI (France), 2009 — Condition: New Copy
A tribute to Dinah Washington – in case you couldn't get that from the title – and a jazzy one too! China Moses definitely sings with the bluesy tones of Washington's early years, but the backings are warmly jazzy – done by pianist Raphael Lemonnier and his trio, and augmented with horns on most of the numbers – with instrumentation stretching out far past the usual shorter readings of the songs that Dinah might have done. Not all tunes are ones you'd recognize as being Washington numbers, but China's presentation of the material definitely evokes strong memories of The Queen – although with a slightly more modern quality too – no surprise, given that China's the daughter of Dee Dee Bridgewater, and you can hear just a touch of that heritage in her music. Titles include "Blue Gardenia", "Mad About The Boy", "Dinah's Blues", "Cry Me A River", "Teach Me Tonight", and "What A Difference A Day Makes". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
