Sweetly jazzy soul from George Benson – a key classic from his great run at Warner Brothers Records, and the kind of record that George did better than anyone else at the time! Back in the 60s, we'd never have guessed that Benson's sweetly crackling vocals would dominate popular jazz more than his great guitar work – but hearing George here, it's clear that his soul work could easily outshine his guitar, especially when set up in a package like this! Atlantic soul maestro Arif Mardin produced, and as with his Chaka Khan productions for Warner at the time, he gives Benson a clean, clear modern style that's certainly pop, but also a lot less cluttered and clunky than modes used with other artists at the time. George is mostly on the vocal tip for the set, and Kashif helps out on one track – no surprise, given that Kashif was soon to walk down the path that Benson had started with his first few vocal albums in the 70s. Titles include "Love Will Come Again", "Use Me", "Late At Night", "In Search Of A Dream", "Lady Love Me", "In Your Eyes", and "Never Too Far To Fall". (Includes the printed inner sleeve.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Benson Burner
Columbia, Late 60s/1976. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A 2LP set that features some great early groovers from George Benson – cut for Columbia back in the late 60s, when George was fresh out of Jack McDuff's classic combo, and grooving on his own with the help of organist Lonnie Smith. These tracks have gotten pretty hard to find on vinyl over ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marty Paich takes on a host of Broadway tunes from the 50s – but as always with his best work, the result is something quite far from its roots – an amazing batch of jazzy instrumentals that owes very little to the original conception of the tunes! Paich's got an incredible ear for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Book Of The Blues Vol 1
Warner, Late 60s. Very Good-
Forget the "blues" in the title – because the set's as much a soul jazz cooker as any of Groove's classic records for Prestige! The format's a bit different than usual – in that Groove solos on Hammond over large arrangements by Onzy Matthews – in a sweet organ/big band ... LP, Vinyl record album

Give Me The Night
Qwest/Warner, 1980. Very Good
Yipes! This one made everyone a bucket of money – especially Quincy Jones, whose new Qwest imprint the record was one of the first to grace. George has come a long way from his roots with Jack McDuff here – but in a way that kind of has us impressed, as he's grooving away slickly on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Private Passion
Warner, 1986. Sealed
Sweet keyboards, R&B grooves, and a great blend of jazz and soul modes – all fused together to make the album one of Jeff Lorber's true classics from the 80s! Lorber's keyboards and programming provide the fusiony foil for the soulful vocals of Karyn White and Michael Jefferies on a ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautifully spare set of duets between violinist Sven Asmussen and guitarist Ulrik Neumann – recorded in a format that's quite unusual for the time! The record features just Sven's violin and Ulrik's guitar – no other backing at all – and the sound is extremely haunting, with ... LP, Vinyl record album
