Concierto En Jazz (Japanese paper sleeve edition)
CD (Item 614516) RCA/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1962 — Condition: New Copy
A live set from this obscure Mexican jazz combo – recorded in the early 60s, in a mode that's kind of a small combo take on an Ellington sound, but with some freer twists too! The approach is nicely offbeat – starting out familiar at first, but then opening up with some offbeat elements that come partly from the group's phrasing, and partly from the way the whole thing's put together – all of which makes for a great little record that goes way past the usual! Pianist Chucho Zarzosa heads of the group – playing an odd-toned instrument with a lot of charm – and other players include Pepe Solis on trumpet, Rodolfo Sanchez on baritone and alto, Mario Ballina on bass, and Felix Agueros on drums – working together nicely on the album's four long tracks. Sanchez is especially nice – with an unusual tone that really comes through on the album's extended version of "Peter Gunn", which features him blowing oddly and in lots of curvy ways – and other tracks include "Perdido", "My Funny Valentine", and "Take the A Train". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
