It always feels like we're waiting a long time for a new record from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – but it's always well worth the wait! This time around, they've found a way to focus their energies even more than before – still sticking strongly in the horn-heavy groove that we love, but also opening things up a bit more on the rhythm tip, too – and going for production that, if anything, makes them sound even more earnest, honest, and spontaneous than before! The record really preserves the live energy that makes the group so compelling – that razor sharp criss-crossing of jazz traditions and styles – steeped in a Chicago legacy that includes Sun Ra and Phil Cohran, but coming across with a hell of a lot more groove than either of them too. Titles include "Touch The Sky", "Kryptonite", "Pluto", "Black Boy", "World Champions", and "Starfighter".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Unstraight Ahead
Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know ... CD

My World
Truth & Soul, 2009. New Copy
One of the best new soul records we've heard in years – a tremendous accomplishment for the mighty Lee Fields, and a set that's quite different than any of his other work! We've always loved Lee's funk and deep soul sides, but this album's something new altogether – almost done in the ... CD

Que Chevere
Freestyle (UK), 2014. New Copy
A real old school set from Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers – just about the only contemporary combo we've ever heard come close to the classic sound of the Latin Soul scene in the 60s! The album smokes like some rare gem on Fania or Cotique – with wicked Latin rhythms tied up in ... CD

Island Of Dr Electrico
Hope Street (Australia), 2014. New Copy
A pretty huge leap forward for The Bombay Royale – the Bollywood funk-inspired combo who bring some Indian charm to the fertile Australian funk scene – and a whole lot more! Funk-era Bollywood soundtracks are still a huge part of the what they do, but there's a whole lot more going on ... CD

Soul Fire/Truth & Soul, 2002. New Copy Gatefold
Tight!! Lee Fields, one of the great criminally under appreciated funky geniuses of the 70s is back with another pounding, raw funk classic that still finds the man at the peak of his powers, decades after he first made mark on the funk landscape! This is Lee's first full length effort for Soul ... CD

Soul Power
Burger, 2014. New Copy
A great debut from Curtis Harding – a singer who's definitely got the soul power promised in the title, but one with a much wider reach as well! The core approach is funky soul, but the music is often inflected with other touches too – putting Curtis in that unique space between styles ... CD

New Ammo
Stoopid, 2014. New Copy Gatefold
Karl Denson's definitely got some new ammo this time around – a sharper, more hook-based approach to work with his usual funky groove! Denson's tenor and flute are still strong in the mix, and the record's still got the requisite Hammond, Fender Rhodes, funky basslines, and horns – but ... CD

A very unusual set of work – original vocal tracks pulled from classic soul and jazz songs – all set to new bossa nova rhythms done especially for the project! Sony Records gave Studio Rio free access to its vaults – and the team was able to pull off original vocals, then rework ... CD

Cultures Of Soul, 1970s/2011. New Copy
They're not kidding about the title on this one – although they might have added "weirdest" to the name, too! The songs here are all familiar ones, especially if you dig rare grooves from the 60s and 70s – but the versions you'll hear are definitely unusual – often some ... CD

Magic Drum Orchestra
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2014. New Copy
The drums here are certainly magic – a great live percussion ensemble who play their own funky variation of a batucada groove! Like Brazilian batucada, the interplay between the drums is amazing – criss-crossing in sound, style, and rhythms – all at a level that's as magically ... CD
