Jack McDuff — Do It Now! ... CD 14.99

Tight funky instrumentals from Brother Jack McDuff – an Atlantic groover that's probably closer to his late 60s gems for Cadet Records than it is his earlier work for Prestige! The solos are shorter, but they're packed nicely around the rhythms – played by a combo that features a young Melvin Sparks on some mighty nice guitar – plus Leo Johnson on tenor and Ray Appleton on drums! The groove is tight and choppy, with little bits of funk, and McDuff's usual sense of humor and warmth – and for the record, Jack wrote loads of original tracks, including "Mush Melon", "Snap Back Jack", "Strolling Blues", and "Do It Now". (Red & purple label pressing – in wonderful shape! Cover has a small cutout hole, but is otherwise wonderful.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good
One of McDuff's fantastic Cadet LPs, and one that features the funky funky organist in a set of crazy arrangements written by him and Richard Evans. An amazing mix of McDuff's soul jazz organ sound with the genius that was the Chess/Cadet studio system of the late 60's – and one that yields ... LP, Vinyl record album
European Encounter (Jazzlore)
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
A uniquely European Encounter between pianist John Lewis and violinist Svend Asmussen – and one that makes for a different blend of instrumentation than you'd get on some of John Lewis' other albums as a leader! The pair are supported by Jimmy Woode on bass and Sture Kalin on drums – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Portrait In Soul
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good-
For years, this was the only album ever recorded by this obscure blind female pianist – until she was rediscovered and rerecorded a few years ago. We still like this one best, though, because it's got all these great original compositions that have a nice deep soul jazz feel to them, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Handle With Care
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good
Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Midnight Blue
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint-
Great great stuff – and for some folks, THE album by Kenny Burrell! This classic set features the guitarist in a quintet with Stanley Turrentine on tenor, Major Holly on bass, Bill English on drums, and the great Ray Barretto on conga – a really great lineup that sparkles with soulful ... Canned Funk
CTI, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
Nothing canned here – as the sound, style, and groove of the record is as fresh and freaky as the classic image on the cover! The riffing rhythms get going right from the start – some amazing lines from a rhythm combo that includes Joe Beck on guitar, Herb Bushler on bass, Jim Madison ... LP, Vinyl record album
