Wonderful stuff – way more than just an easy instrumental album, and a great batch of exotic tunes with lots of jazzy touches! There's enough of the Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman influence here – but Rex and group take the sound a lot further, by playing like a true small combo, and swinging the tunes with a heck of a lot more jazz than you'd expect. Grooves are nice, and get quite Latiny at times – and the feel of the record almost reminds us of some of Bobby Montez work for Pacific Jazz in the late 50s. A double-length set from Chicago tenorist Chris Greene – but a package that may well not be enough to hold all the new ideas in his music! We've really watched Chris grow strongly over the past few years – and with this wonderfully well-crafted, rich-voiced album, he steps forward to a level that rivals some of the much bigger saxophone talents recording these days for labels like High Note or Criss Cross! Greene's always had a deep tone in his horns – one that draws from a Chicago tradition, but inflects it with some of the more contemporary modes of later players on the scene – like Eric Alexander, who Chris might be approaching with this set. The range of rhythms and song styles is great – never gimmicky, but expanding past standard expectations – so that Greene's group is playing Coltrane and Wayne Shorter one minute, then Martin Denny the next, then Ed Motta, then a huge batch of their own great compositions as well. A groovy set of loungey bossa tunes – pulled from 60s recordings on Capitol, Liberty, Pacific Jazz, and related labels. There's more than a few "authentic" bossa performers here, mixed with some others that pick up the groove nicely – working out their own west coast interpretation of the genre in a lively swinging way. Although Martin Denny had the big hit with "Quiet Village", the tune was written by Les Baxter – a fact that's stated clearly on the cover of this one, which says "Les Baxter's Original Quiet Village"! The album's a nice collection of some of Baxter's best exotica work for Capitol – including a few titles from some of the more hard to find albums in his catalog. Classic exotica from Arthur Lyman – a set that really shows the lessons he learned from Martin Denny – and his willingness to take the genre into some strong new directions! The style here is still very much in the percussive mode you might expect from Denny's generation – but it's also a bit more mystical and exotic too – somewhat swirling and dark at points, with lots of weird sounds in the mix. There's an odd instrument called a "moon harp" on part of the record – and a bit of vocals from the lovely Ethel Azama too – and titles include the beautiful "Moon Over a Ruined Castle", plus "Bwana A", "South Pacific Moonlight", "La Paloma", "Pua Carnation", and a great take on "Colonel Bogey's March", aka the theme to "Bridge Over The River Kwai". A pretty nice album of exotica material – much better than most of the other Hawaiian LPs floating around at the time, and very much in the spirit of the best work by Martin Denny or Arthur Lyman. The instrumentation here is a mix of piano, vibes, and percussion – and the recording style has the instruments drifting very quietly about, sliding into one another with less of a dramatic feel than on other exotic albums – which really works well in creating a backdrop of sound. A really cool shift for this very hip group – a set of sweet exotica numbers, after a previous record of blacksploitation grooves – yet one that's every bit as funky as the previous album, thanks to all the right instrumental touches! At the top, the music has lots of older exotica touches – percussion, vibes, harp, and other exotic elements – but at the bottom, there's some heavier grooves – working with the sounds on the top, all at a level that's maybe somewhere in the territory of a hip kung fu soundtrack – or as if Martin Denny were asked to score a film called Shaft In Hawaii! A very cool little set – maybe not the deepest dive into the decade of the 70s, in that the package isn't full of unissued tracks or super-rare singles – but it does represent a great look at the decade that goes way past the hits, and much farther than the charts – including the sort of material that was slightly ignored at the time, but has gone on to be really appreciated in more recent years! The book-style set is filled with great choices and unusual tunes – work from both the US and UK scenes, some of it by bigger names represented here by more unusual cuts – some by others who barely cracked the mainstream, but did some great work at the time.
