A great take on the Soul Unsigned series – one that aims a bit more at the dancefloor than previous volumes, yet still hangs onto all the strongly soulful sounds we've come to expect from the label! Mike Thompson put together the set, and the feel is soul-based club and house – music that's very much in the best Peven Everett or Rurals territory, but even more compelling, given that many of these artists are just up-and-coming acts! A great step forward for the Soul Unsigned series – a full album of never-issued tracks, and a collection that really shows the label's talents for unearthing great music! As you'd guess by the name, none of these artists have contracts with other labels – so the set's about as fresh as you can get for Neo Soul – like when you occasionally strike gold rummaging around on CD Baby, but without any of the clunkers! The set list is really great, and most of the tracks here have a really solid sound – warmth and depth that we hardly hear from some of the too-signed soul artists working out there, and proof that there's always some great soul promise around the bend – as long as you know where to look. Great work from a series we've really learned to trust for the hippest in underground soul – a rich assortment of work from some of the best acts in the underground, most of whom you probably don't already have in your CD collection! Over a few short years, Soul Unsigned has gone from a virtually unknown imprint to one we really trust to uncover some great new work – really at the cutting edge of Neo Soul, and continual proof that there's plenty still bubbling under, if you just know where to look! If you've spent too much money on so-so CDs over the years, a set like this is a great place to start – both for you, and for the artists included. Mindblowing work from the Soul Unsigned series – only three volumes old, but already one of the best sources we know for tapping into the Neo Soul underground! As with the previous two sets, the quality level here is very high – music of the sort that really keeps us digging for hip soul sets from the contemporary scene – not the bigger-name artists that always get foisted to the top of the charts, but the independent ones who are still strongly dedicated to making music that really matters! As the title indicates, the artists here are all unsigned – working without any bigger label contracts – which makes it even more amazing when you hear the set, and realize that they've hit top-shelf sounds while working on their own – a great reminder that, amidst the layers of management and "handling" some singers may get, in the end it's still the artist that really matters. Sweet smooth soul from Chris Youngblood – the first full-length album by any artist for the Soul Unsigned label, an imprint we've already come to love for some really killer compilations! The set's a winner all the way through – laidback and jazzy, with an undercurrent that reminds us of some of our favorite mellow soul singers of the 70s, with a bit of a contemporary twist. The production style is lean enough to never get too commercial, but the album's also got a tightness that takes it way past some simple beats n keys affair too. Titles include "In Love With You", "Spend Your Life", "Love In The Morning", "Tell The Truth", "Daydreamin", "So Good", "Up & Down", "Hot", and "Lady Of My Dreams".

Killer cuts galore – a tight selection of the kind of Neo Soul groovers you'd find on Ginger Tony's Jump Start show for Solar Radio! The vibe here mixes laidback soul numbers with more upbeat tunes – and throughout it all, there's a sophisticated, contemporary vibe to the music – the kind of forward-thinking soul tracks we've always loved from the British and Japanese soul scenes, mixed with a few American tunes too!
