Osaka MonaurailEyewitness To The . . . Live In Heavy Funk System At Raindogs, Osaka ... CD
RD Records (Japan), 2005. New Copy .... $32.99
They left a blank in the title, so we'll never know what it is they witnessed – but that's alright with us, because Osaka Monoaurail's so goshdarn funky, we can always forgive them for their weird choice of titles! The group's a real standout in the international deep funk underground – as they play with an intensity to match the James Brown Band of the late 60s King years – really ripping along the rhythms with incredible tightness, and making their 9 piece lineup of horns, organ, percussion, and guitar burn with a really classic funky power! Vocalist Ryo Nakata has a weirdly raspy style that makes him one of the most striking singers in funk today – no copycat modes at all, and a rough and ready vocal approach that only adds even more weight to the groove of the group. CD features a blistering live performance that runs for nearly 80 minutes – 24 tracks in all, partying seamlessly next to one another in a mix of classics and original tunes. Titles include "Back & Alive 77", "The Coming Back", "Jam 1976", "Double Up Now", "New New Type Thing", "Whatever You Do", "Thankful", "What It Is What It Was", and "Theme From Shaft".

Undercover Express (Osaka Monaurail) — Introducing Undercover Express (aka Amen Brother) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2008. New Copy .... $29.99
One of our favorite funk combos take on a host of gems from the past – all classic soul and funk numbers that really expand the sound of Osaka Monaurail! The group first got their start doing a great riff on the sound of James Brown – but here, they move into Memphis soul, Chicago funk, and more – working their well-honed instrumental talents over a host of killer cuts that explode in fresh new versions! Unlike other records, where Ryo Nakata sings, this time around he's just leading the group and playing keyboards – but that shift is OK with us, as it gives the horns and guitar lots more space to do their thing. Titles include "Cafe Regio's", "Supershine #9", "Chocolate Buttermilk", "Amen Brother", "Get Down", "Get Ready", "Little Old Money Maker", "Message To Love", "Divertissement", and "Hey Jude". CD also features 3 bonus live tracks – "Tighten Up", "Truck Turner", and "Soulful Strut". Note: This is a different package for the album Amen Brother – which was issued under the Osaka Monaurail name.

Osaka MonaurailState Of The World ... CD
2011. New Copy .... Around March 15, 2012
Damn, we love these guys! And this time around, Osaka Monaurail sound harder and heavier than ever – very much back in their best 70s JBs mode – after a recent foray into 60s soul! The rhythms are incredibly tight – razor-sharp, with a forcefulness that few other funky combos can match – that hard-ripping groove you're usually only likely to find on the best James Brown productions from back in the day. Instrumental passages are at the forefront, too – which means a bit less vocals from group leader Ryo Nakata, although we still always love his unique funky soul approach when he does come into the mix. Titles include "Endemism", "Work Song", "Hung Up", "Andrias Japonicus", "Stop Doggin Me Around", and "The Archipelago".

new Marva Whitney with Osaka MonaurailLive In Japan ... CD
Shout (Japan), 2006. New Copy .... $22.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky soul double-header – one that features live material both by Osaka Monaurail and the legendary Marva Whitney! The set starts out with a few tracks by OM – playing in that razor-sharp, James Brown-inspired groove that we love so much – easily the greatest contemporary JB-driven funk we can think of! Singer Ryo Nakata throws in a bit of vocals over the group's instrumental grooves – but then steps aside so that Marva Whitney can take center stage for the remaining three-fourths of the album – singing with the same raw fury as on her recent studio set with Osaka Monaurail! The sound here is incredible – easily some of the best funk-revival work we can think of, and the sort of record that should make Marva plenty proud after all these years. Titles include "New New Type Thing", "Evil", "I Made A Mistake", "It's My Thing", "Your Love Was Good For Me", "Things Got To Get Better", "What Do I Have To Do", and "Daddy Don't Know About Sugar Bear".
(CD comes in slimline case, but with full artwork insert, and professionally printed CD art. Also features some bonus video material too!)

new Osaka Monaurail feat Shirley Davis — No Trouble On The Mountain/Archipelago ... 7-inch
Unique/Our Label (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A wicked remake of the classic Lou Rawls' tune – one that has the vocals of Shirley Davis fronting Osaka Monaurail – who push the tune nicely from 60s soul to 70s funk! And speaking of funk, "Archipelago" is a great instrumental – one with plenty of JBs-like vamping on the guitar and bassline – and some full-on horns that are mighty nice!

Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro — Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2009. New Copy Gatefold .... $29.99
An amazing deep funk combo from Japan – one that almost rivals Osaka Monaurail for classic-styled grooves! These guys have a sharpness that reminds us of the late 60s James Brown Band at their best, touched with a bit of JBs instrumental riffing – all produced with just the right gritty edge to make the music sound even better! There's no vocals at all, and the album rolls along madly like a stack of funky 45s – way rougher and harder than you'd guess from the landscape image on the cover, and proof that the Japanese scene has plenty of deep funk to offer these days. Titles include "Time Has Come", "Yellow Soul Force", "The Changes", "The Bunch", "Baggy Pants", "Big Pig Affair", "Black Dog Black Cat Black Bird", and "Eastwood Magic City".
