Gal Costa — Gal Costa Canta Tom Jobim – Ao Vivo ... CD
BMG (Brazil), 1999. New Copy 2CD .... $18.99
Gal Costa sings the best of Antonio Carlos Jobim – working here with a really sparkling sound in a live performance that covers the space of two CDs! The backing is by a very nice little jazz group, and Gal's at her best later styles here – hitting nice jazzy vocal passages, and singing freely without any clunky arrangements to hold her back. Cristovao Bastos leads the group and handled the arrangements – and he's as great as ever in this top-shelf setting – sophisticated, but nicely swinging – in a way that really keeps things fresh. Titles include "Fotografia", "Wave", "Derradeira Primavera", "Triste", "Anos Dourados", "Ligia", "Tema De Amor De Garbriela", and "Samba Do Avaio".

new Antonio Carlos JobimStone Flower (with bonus track) ... CD
CTI, 1970. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99
One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's greatest records – and a perfect blend of his subtle bossa genius with the moody electric sound of CTI! Jobim plays electric and acoustic piano, guitar, and sings a bit – and Deodato handled the arrangements with a breezy brilliance that matches all the magic of Jobim's wonderful compositions, but gives them a slightly more fluid feel too – in a way that's somewhat more sophisticated than the sound of Jobim's previous CTI outings – Tide and Wave. Other players on the album include Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, and Airto on percussion – and there's a great mix of Brazilian and American styles on the set – electric, sinister, breezy, and always wonderful! Includes the titles "Sabia", "God & The Devil In The Land Of The Sun", "Children's Games", "Stone Flower", "Brazil", "Tereza My Love", and "Choro". Plus, this CD reissue features an alternate take of the song "Brazil".

Antonio Carlos Jobim & Vinicius De Moraes — Orfeu Da Conceicao ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1956. New Copy .... $9.99
A beautifully done presentation of this classic early collaboration between Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes – the soundtrack for a stage musical that could easily be called the birth of bossa nova! The play was a precursor to the better-known film version – Black Orpheus – and as on that one, Jobim and Vinicius handled the music with a groundbreaking style that was unlike anything else in Brazilian music at the time! Many tunes begin with gentle guitar and feature male vocals – sung in a light and breezy style that has plenty of bossa elements, but which is also still slightly more formative too. A few tracks feature fuller orchestrations, and a sound that's a bit more samba – but still equally great, and inflected with a strongly modernist sensibility. The sound quality here is wonderful – remastering that's even clearer than the original record – and although the CD is a short one, that's only because the original release was a 10" LP! Titles include "Um Nome De Mulher", "Monologo De Orfeu", "Ouverture", "Mulher Sempre Mulher", "Eu E O Meu Amor", "Lamento No Morro", and "Se Todos Fossem Iguais A Voce".

new Trio Esperanca — De Bach A Jobim ... CD
Dreyfus Jazz (France), 2010. New Copy .... $14.99 16.98
Trio Esperanca sound lovelier than ever – in a unique vocal set that mixes their Brazilian roots with the transformations they've taken on the Parisian scene! The harmonies are sublime, and the album features only a bit of guitar, accordion, and percussion next to their voices – but mostly relies just on the heavenly sound of the trio, as they work through material that includes bossa gems and some vocally-reworked classics that are kind of an extension of some of the hipper vocal group modes coming out of Paris in the 60s. Titles include "Caminho Da Razao", "A Rosa", "Upa Neguinho", "Penny Lane", "Samba Do Aviao", and "Odeon".

new Milton Banana — Ao Meu Amigo Tom ... CD
RCA (Brazil), Late 70s. New Copy .... $11.99
Sweet later work from bossa jazz drummer Milton Banana – a set of tunes delivered as a tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, but done very much in the spirit of Banana's best 70s work! The style here is a bit more expansive than Milton's harder-edged sets of the 60s – core trio work expanded with some light strings and woodwinds, in ways that would really please Jobim – who seems to be enjoying himself nicely, having a drink with Milton on the front cover! Many numbers are done in the "pot-pourri" style that Banana used heavily at the time – mixing a few key themes into instrumental medleys – and titles include "Chega De Suadade", "Intuil Paisagem", "Amor Em Paz", "Aquas De Marco", "So Em Teus Bracos", "Este Seu Olhar", "Insensatez", "So Danco Samba", "Dindi", "Demais", and "A Felicidade".

Milton Banana — Ao Meu Amigo Tom, Chico, E Vinicius ... CD
BMG (Brazil), Late 70s. New Copy .... $9.99
A collection of work from 3 different sets of bossa albums made by drummer Milton Banana – tributes to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, and Vinicius De Moraes – all recorded in the late 70s! The style here is a bit warmer than Banana's bossa work of the 60s – thanks to the use of electric piano on some tracks, and a production approach that's a bit more contemporary too. But the sound is bossa jazz all the way through – and a few tracks have some fuller backings that use bits of woodwinds and strings, but always in very light ways. Some tracks are in medley mode, and titles include "Regra Tres", "Discussao", "Samba De Orly", "Desafinado", "Chega De Saudade", "Ate O Fim", "Aguas De Marco", "Wave", "Meu Caro Amigo", and "Brigas Nunca Mais".

Willie Bobo, War, Gene Ammons, & Others — Live At The Watts Jazz Festival Vol 1 ... CD
Rhino/Avenue Jazz, 1973. New Copy .... $4.99
An interesting historical document, and a pretty decent live set – in the same soul mixed-bag style as the Wattstax live albums. This one was recorded at the Watts Jazz Fest in 1973, and it features two great tracks by Willie Bobo – one a mellow reading of Jobim's "Dindi", the other a longer jamming cut called "Come On And Get A Piece". War check in with a 16 minute version of "Gypsy Man", and the LAPD lay down a nice 10 minute reading of the soul jazz classic "Compared To What". The set's completed by Gene Ammons and Jimmy Witherspoon, each of whom perform tracks in a straighter soul jazz style.
(These copies have a cut out mark.)

BSTC — Music For A Saturday Evening ... CD
All Natural, 2008. Used CD .... $6.99
Modern club ready soul from BSTC – a diverse blend of of group soul, electronic flourishes, instrumentals and vocal tunes – tracks that reach back to disco, house and even a bit of bossa – and a sweet little departure for the mostly Chi hip hop oriented All Natural Inc! BSTC does a pretty tight job of blending band based grooves and studio built vibes – Andy C & Tunji handle lots of the instrumentation and production – with loads of breezy keys, synth bass and beats and soulful rhythms – some tunes with additional horns and vocals. Very fresh stuff that timelessly blends the soul grooves of the 70s onward! 14 tracks on the CD: including "BSTC", "Love It" feat JL, "Get It" feat Keanna Johnson, "Venus And Mars", "Fly Away" feat Keanna Johnson, a nice take on Tom Jobim/Astrud Gilberto's "Aqua De Beber", "Love And Lust" feat Russoul, "Suffering And Smiling" feat Yaw, "Jazz In Outerspace", "Mr AC" feat ZZAJE & Low Down Brass Band and more.

Chico Buarque — Construcao ... CD
Philips (Brazil), 1972. New Copy .... $18.99
If you've ever been wondering which album to get by Chico Buarque – this is it! The record's a stunning batch of sophisticated sides, done in collaboration with Roberto Menescal, and with help from Jobim and MPB4! The album builds on the style of Buarque's excellent late 60s songwriting, and adds in some of the more complicated approaches to arrangement that were being developed in Brazil at the end of the 60s – in a way that pushes Chico's work to the next level, and which makes this record sit right up there with work at the time by Jobim or Edu Lobo. Titles include "Samba De Orly", "Valsinha", "Acalanto", "Deus Ilhe Pague", and "Construcao". Really beautiful – with a lot of soul, and a great sound!
(Note: the CD has a few slight dips in sound at times, very brief and nothing major – and this is an issue with the original mastering of the record.)

Bill Charlap & Rene Rosnes — Double Portrait ... CD

A jazz piano duets set from Bill Dunlap & Renee Rosnes – and a timelessly charming one, from the lovely renditions of seminal material to the deft interplay that makes it sound effortless – the first collaborative album from the husband & wife duo and hopefully the first of many! Everything's working here, from the well chosen songs by Wayne Shorter, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joe Henderso to the evocative choice for cover art featuring a wonderful Marc Chagall painting. Titles include "Chorinho", "Double Rainbow (Chovendo Na Roseira)", "Ana Maria", "The Saros Cycle" (a Renee Rosnes original that fits in wonderfully with the adaptations), "My Man's Gone Now", "Dancing In The Dark", Inner Urge", "Little Glory" and "Never Will I Marry"

Dave Grusin — Discovered Again! ... LP
Sheffield Labs, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $4.99
To tell the truth, we didn't know he'd ever been lost – but who cares anyway, as the album captures Dave in his best 70s fusion mode! The album's got some great mellow tunes that bubble along with a sweet electric feel – gliding in that Grusin way that was never that funky, but which always had a warm soulful undercurrent nonetheless. Recording is direct to disc, giving the set a high-end production touch – but Dave keeps the playing and the group spontaneous – and he's working here with a small lineup that features Ron Carter, Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, and Larry Bunker. Includes a great reading of Jobim's "Captain Bacardi", a good take on the "Theme From Barretta", plus "Sun Song", "Adeus A Papai", and "A Child Is Born".
(Cover has a small date inside the gatefold and on back.)

Carlos Lyra & Others — Coisa Mais Linda ... CD
BMG (Brazil), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy .... $10.99
A rich look at the songs of Carlos Lyra – a collection pulled together from recordings of the 70s, 80s, and 90s – not just featuring Lyra's vocals, but also those of singers like Joyce, Elis Regina, Nara Leao, Flora Purim, and others! The classic bossa modes of Lyra are carried forth strongly into these later sides – an essence that's undeniably strong, and which seems to flourish wonderfully in the hands of these other vocalists – especially given that most of the backings are done with a musical style that's very true to Lyra's original intent! Titles include "Entrudo" by Elis Regina, "Voce E Eu" by Nara Leao, "Maria Moita" by Joyce, "Cartao De Visita" by Flora Purim, "Marcha Da Quarta Feira De Cinzas" by Maria Creuza, "Samba Do Carioca" by Miucha & Tom Jobim, "Coisa Mais Linda" by Gal Costa, "Maria Ninguem" by Rita Lee, and the tracks "Influencia Do Jazz", "Lobo Bobo", and "Se E Tarde Me Perdoa" by Lyra himself.

Jayme Marques — Stop ... CD
RCA (Spain), 1978. New Copy .... $13.99
No stopping here – as the album's a groover from the word "go" – a sweet mix of Brazilian-styled rhythms and some warmer electric instrumentation! The set's one of the best from Spanish 70s maestro Jayme Marques – who sings and plays guitar on the record, amidst other instrumentation that's often heavy on percussion and Fender Rhodes! Some tracks feature a female backing chorus, but never used in ways that are too cheesy – and the record has some of the same soulful elements as the best groovers coming from Brazil at the time. Titles include the classic "Hooked On Green" – plus "Um Abraco A Tom Jobim", "Windsurfing", "Fifty, Fifty", "Gentes E Coisas De Bahia", and "Las Rosas No Hablan".

Sergio Mendes & Bossa Rio — Voce Ainda Nao Ouviu Nada ... CD
Philips/Dubas (Brazil), 1964. New Copy .... $21.99
Early bossa jazz from Sergio Mendes – recorded with his famous Bossa Rio combo, in the years before he moved to America! The album's a classic in Brazilian jazz – a tight album of bossa-inflected jazz tunes played with razor-sharp precision, handled with a style that went on to influence countless other Brazilian groups at the time. Mendes is in the lead on piano, and other players include Edison Machado on drums, Raul De Souza on trombone, and Hector Costita on tenor sax. The whole thing's great – a masterpiece of both jazz and bossa – and it's filled with classic tunes arranged by Jobim, Moacir Santos, and Sergio himself. Titles include "Nana", "Primitivo", "Desafinado", "Ela E Carioca", "Amor Em Paz", "Noa Noa", and "Neurotico".

Gilson Peranzzetta, Mauro Senise & Silvia Braga — Melodia Sentimental ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2009. New Copy .... $22.99
Sentimental, but never in a soppy way – as the well-tuned sensibilities of Gilson Peranzzetta and Mauro Senise make for an album of many sophisticated charms! The record features core piano from Peranzzetta and reeds from Senise – played in ways that mix older echoes of Brazilian choro with more serious musical modes – almost a soundtrack-styled level of expression, considering the depth of feeling and tones. Silvia Braga joins the pair on harp – an instrument that's used sparingly, but in really beautiful ways – kind of cascading in to fill up some of the sparer spaces in Peranzzetta's arrangements. Titles include "Todo Sentimento", "Amparo", "Lenda Do Caboclo", "Siciliano", "Doctor Gradus Ad Parnassum", "Villa Jobim", and "Le Petit Berger".

Oscar Peterson — Motions & Emotions ... LP
MPS, 1969. Very Good .... $2.99
Pure genius from Oscar Peterson – one of his finest moments ever! The record is very different than most of Oscar's over-recorded trio format ones – and features Claus Ogerman crafting some impeccable backings of lofty strings and compressed horns, creating a pillow of air that takes Oscar's piano to the sky and beyond, floating into realms never dreamed of on other LPs! The set sparkles with a strident MPS easy groove – completely sublime, with a perfectness that we'd ascribe to a rare few albums, such as the similar-grooving Jobim album Wave, also helped out tremendously by Ogerman. Titles include "Dreamsville", "Sally's Tomato", "Sunny", "Wave", "Wandering", and "Ode To Billy Joe".
(Black label German MPS pressing, from the 70s. Cover has an unglued top seam.)

Roy Porter — Inner Feelings ... CD
Vistone/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy .... $32.99
A crazy bit of funk from drummer Roy Porter – a player who first rose to fame during the LA bop years of the late 40s, but who sounds even hipper here in the 70s! The album's got a madly skittish approach to funk – one that's highly rhythmic, but often in unconventional ways – somewhat similar to Redd Holt's excellent albums for the Paula label. Roy plays drums, percussion, and sings a bit – and the grooves run from break-heavy instrumentals to even cooler numbers that bring in more of a sense of flow and soul – really opening things up beyond any simple 70s jazz funk cliches, and hitting some really wicked new territory! Instrumentation includes plenty of great horns, electric piano, guitar, and even a bit of Arp – all used in really inventive anc reative ways. Titles include the classic crate-digging favorites "Panama" and "Party Time", plus a vocal version of "Jessica", a cover of Jobim's "Waver-ing", and another nice original called "Funny Feelin'"! Tremendous stuff all the way through!

A large orchestral work that features the piano of Wagner Tiso set against orchestral backing directed by Roberto Tibirica. The core of the album is the extended piece "Cenas Brasileiras", written by Tiso, and featuring him as the main soloist on accordion and piano. The album also features a long reading of Hector Villa-Lobos' "Choros 6", and a shorter reading of Jobim's "Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar". The whole thing's nice and moody, with the dark edges of the best titles on Biscoito Fino.

Marcos Valle — Braziliance! (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $21.99
One of the most important early albums by Marcos Valle – a set of instrumental tracks recorded with lots of acoustic guitar! Even though Valle was well known as a singer and composer of bossa nova tunes, the set instead focuses on his instrumental work – recording his guitar ala Jobim or Bonfa at the time – with some larger arrangements from Deodato, who really brings a great feel to the set! The sound is tremendous – as sweeping strings soar over tight rhythms from drummer Wilson Das Neves – and Valle and Deodato set some magical moods on tunes that include "Deus Brasileiro", "Vamos Pranchar", "Tanto Andei", "Seu Encanto", "Batucada Surgiu", "Dorme Profundo", and "Os Grilos" – the first ever recording of "Crickets Sing For Anamaria"!

Pablo, 1977. New Copy .... $6.99 11.98
Sarah does love Brazil – and the album's one of a number recorded in a Brazilian mode later in her career – in a way that really helped her breathe new life into her music by finding a different groove to work with! The arrangements here are relatively full – handled by Edson Fredrico throughout, and featuring players that include Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica, Nelson Angelo on guitar, and Helio Delmiro on acoustic guitar – all wrapped up in a sound that's got the warmer jazz touches of the Brazilian scene of the 70s. The set was recorded in Rio, and Danilo Caymmi and Milton Nascimento provide a bit of guest vocals – and tracks include "The Face I Love", "Courage", "The Day It Rained", "Vera Cruz", and "If You Went Away". Various — We Love Bossa Nova – Sweet Duets ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1960s. New Copy .... $32.99
There's something about bossa nova that makes it a perfect setting for vocal duets – the gentle rhythms, light instrumental interplay, or maybe even the sunny warmth of the style – a real natural for the coming together of two sweet talents, as you'll hear on the classic tracks in this set! Most work here is from the 60s – and a good deal of it is from the Verve & A&M catalogs, mixed with a handful of tunes pulled straight from Brazil, mostly recorded back then for Philips – all wrapped together with great contemporary artwork in a lovely Japanese-only package! Titles include "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" and "So Nice" by Marcos Valle (with Anamaria), "Upa Neguinho" by Edu Lobo & Maria Bethania, "Odara" by Nara Leao & Caetano Veloso, "Samba Triste" by Jackie & Roy, "Coracao Vagabundo" by Gal Costa & Caetano Veloso, "Whistle Samba" by Maria Toledo & Luiz Bonfa, "Agua De Beber" by Astrud Gilberto, "Aguas De Marco" by Elis Regina & Antonio Carlos Jobim, and "Corcovado" by Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto.

Various — Legends Of Benin ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $22.99
Brilliant work from Benin – an ear-opening compilation that's filled with wonderful grooves we've never heard before! The rhythms are unusual, instrumentation hypnotic, and vocals really offbeat – making the whole thing sound very different than more familiar African work we've stocked – especially some of the better-known grooves from the Nigerian scene! There's an occasional hint of the exotic tones of Ethiopian music, but the rhythms are more focused overall – making the tunes all pretty groove-heavy, even when dropping in odd elements – an approach that makes the music here very easy to get into – even without any sort of history or geography lesson. But the booklet also provides plenty of that – a great story of the scene, and some wonderfully personal notes from compiler Samy Ben Radjeb – who's very open about his slow process of discovering this music. The whole package is beautiful, and the set's every bit as crucial as Radjeb's earlier African Scream Contest collection. Titles include "La Musica En Verite" and "Dadje Von O Von Non" by Gnonnas Pedro et Ses Dadjes, "Feeling You Got" and "E Nan Mian Nuku" by El Rego Et Ses Commandos, "Ya Mi Ton Gbo" and "Honton Soukpo Gnon" by Antoine Dougbe, "Dou Dagbe We" by Honore Avolonto Et L'Orchestre Black Santiago, "Djobime" by El Rego Et Ses Commandos, and "Na Mi Do Gbe Hue Nu" by Honore Avolonto.
