Webster Lewis8 For The 80s ... CD
Epic/Expansion (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $16.99
Genius jazzy soul from Webster Lewis – one of his amazing late 70s sets for Epic Records! By this point in his career, Lewis had honed his keyboard craft to perfection – and on albums like this one, he laid down some excellent smooth soulful fusion that soared in a righteous way that few other artists of his generation could match! The sound's never cheesy, and has a wonderfully fusion-based bottom that's served up by a range of great players that include Paul Jackson, James Gadson, and Bennie Maupin – and which is topped off by very jazz-sensitive production from Lewis and Herbie Hancock. Most cuts have vocals – some by Lewis himself – and the album includes the monster dancefloor cut "Give Me Some Emotion", plus the cuts "Fire", "Go For It", "You Deserve To Dance", and "The Love You Give To Me".

Webster LewisLet Me Be The One (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy .... $16.99
A jazzy soul masterpiece from Webster Lewis – light years away from the rougher funk he cut at the start of the 70s! The album's beautifully put together – almost perfect at all points, at a level that we'd rank right up there with the best work by Leroy Hutson, Roy Ayers, or other contemporary maestros in the studio. Unlike some of the more commercial artists of his generation – who also came to soul through jazz – Webster doesn't push the hooks too hard, nor try too much for a hit. And instead, he's more than happy to stay in his own righteous space – with a sound that's smooth, but never slick – tight, but not uptight. He's got some great help on the record – including keyboards from Herbie Hancock and Skip Scarborough, guitar from David T Walker, and percussion from Willie Bobo – all of whom keep things cool. Vocals are handled by a number of singers, including Webster himself – and titles include "Bout The Love", "Let Me Be The One", "Love Won't Harm No One", "El Bobo", "Kemo Kemo", "A Quiet Thing", and "Flying High". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Reach Out" and "Boston".

Webster LewisLive In Norway – The Club 7 Live Tapes ... CD
Plastic Strip Press (Norway), 1971. New Copy 2CDs .... $19.99
The earliest work we've ever heard from keyboardist Webster Lewis – and a set that's quite different than his late 70s groovers for Columbia Records! The music here is equal parts jazz, soul, and funk – spun out of over a set of long tracks recorded in Oslo at the start of the 70s – and done in a very righteous mode overall! Even at this early age, Lewis is a tremendous talent on the keys – hitting the Hammond and electric piano with a groove that's somewhere in between Doug Carn or Charles Earland at the time – and always with a free-flowing, very exploratory sound that's wonderfully recorded throughout – and which almost makes the record feel like an American classic on the Black Jazz label! The drums on the set are by Jimmy Hopps – who brings in some funky beats at just the right moments – and other musicians include Bobby Greene on alto and Stan Strickland on tenor – plus Judd Watkins on vocals, who sings on some of the best songs with a deep-voiced quality that's really great! This double-length reissue really expands past the previous version on Counterpoint – and the 2CD set features 15 tracks that include "Do You Believe", "Saturday Night Opening", "Dear Sister", "Qvote Unqvote", "Mr Knots", "Space Rock", "Silent Lights", "Up On The Roof", "Club 7 Latin", "For Arne", "Twelve Gates To The City", and "Intermezzo".

Webster LewisOn The Town (plus bonus track) ... CD
Epic/Expansion (UK), 1976. New Copy .... $13.99
Classic club from Webster Lewis – and much more of an all-out disco affair than some of his later work! The record introduces Lewis' all-encompassing style – as he writes, arranges, and produces the album at a level that easily matches that of Barry White – who would later emerge as a mentor for Lewis, introducing him as part of the later Love Unlimited Orchestra records. The group here is billed as "Webster Lewis & The Post-Pop Space-Rock Be-Bop Gospel Tabernacle Orchestra & Chorus" – a pretty good way to describe the soaringly full sound of the album – one that's built up from Webster's keyboards with lots of added strings and rhythms, plus occasional backing vocals from a female chorus. Most of the focus here is instrumental, though – filled with great tunes that include "On The Town", "Love Is The Way", "Do It With Style", "Song Of Joy", "Goodnight Baby Girl", "Since I've Been Gone", and "Saturday Night Steppin Out". CD features the bonus track "Let's Do It Again".

Webster LewisTouch My Love (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Expansion (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $16.99
Webster Lewis takes off wonderfully here – finding a completely unique groove that's equal parts club, soul, and fusion! The album's almost as sublime as Roy Ayers' best from the time – and has a similar balance that's perfectly done – a depth of thought that goes way beyond conventional club, and a willingness to bring in lots more complicated elements from various jazz sources. Webster's keyboards are nicely out front in the set – and there's some great vocals by a female chorus who sweeten up the sound nicely, but not in ways that are too commercial or cliched. The whole thing's great – a righteous masterpiece through and through – and tracks include "Hideaway", "There's A Happy Feeling", "Touch My Love", "Believe In Yourself", "Barbara Ann", and "Loving". CD features 4 bonus tracks too "Wee Church", "Japanese Umbrella", "Spirit Of Love", and "Touch My Love (alt mix)".

new Herbie Hancock — Feets Don't Fail Me Now ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good .... $2.99
One of those albums that always gets lost between the Sextant/Headhunters days – and the later Rockit hip hop records. Herbie's clearly trying to find a voice here – working in a mode that's actually smooth soul on most cuts, mixing keyboards and vocals in a style that's similar to work by Herbie-inheritors like Webster Lewis or Bobby Lyle. The formula works best when it's kept mellow – and achieves a spacious sound that's overall a good extension of Herbie's funk into a soul mode. There's a bit of early electronica on the set, but not much – and titles include "Trust Me", "Tell Everybody", "Honey From The Jar", and "Knee Deep".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some edge wear.)

Bobby Lyle — Night Fire ... CD
Capitol/Soul Brother (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $16.99
A stone classic from Bobby Lyle – and a record that really has him stepping out strongly, both as a keyboardist and a singer! Bobby's strength at this point is undeniable – and he's got a perfect sense of balance that rivals contemporaries like Roy Ayers or Webster Lewis – both of whom work in a similarly jazzy groove! Lyle plays some great Fender Rhodes on the set – plus other more way-out keyboards too – and production is by the At-Home team, who really know how to bring in a strong sense of focus to the grooves, while still letting the best jazzy elements flourish. Titles include "Space Place", "Stop Running Away From Love", "Getting Into Love", "Dream Lady", "Stop Running Away From Love", and "For Love".

Gwen McCrae — On My Way ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1982. New Copy .... $15.99
A stone killer from Gwen McCrae – a set that's light years past the deep soul of Gwen's Miami roots – and which is given a tight, modern spin by the great Webster Lewis! Lewis produced, and plays plenty of keyboards here – and his fusion-inspired groove really helps unlock a whole new side of Gwen's vocals – a vibe started on her previous "Funky Sensation" work for Atlantic, but a bit different too – with some sunny Cali touches that really mark a strong step forward in her music. There's loads of heavy rhythms on the set, but the sound is way past disco too – and arrangements are handled by Lewis, Fred Wesley, Harold Batiste, and HB Barnum. Titles include "Keep The Fire Burning", "I Didn't Take Your Man", "Doin' It", "Be For Real", "Hang In", and "I Need To Be With You".

Gerry Mulligan & Ben WebsterGerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster ... CD
Verve, 1959. Used .... $6.99
Mulligan always sounds great next to a tenor – especially in the Verve series that has him teamed up with players like Johnny Hodges, Paul Desmond, or Stan Getz. This release, cut with Ben Webster upfront, is one of the best of that series – and features the pair blowing easily and soulfully on some long tracks with rhythm by Jimmy Rowles, Leroy Vinnegar, and Mel Lewis. Titles include "Go Home", "The Cat Walk", "Sunday", "Who's Got Rhythm", and "Tell Me When".

Carl Magnus Neumann — Live At Kongsberg & Other Unreleased Works ... CD
Plastic Strip Press (Norway), 1970/1974/1981. New Copy .... $18.99
An undiscovered chapter in the career of Norwegian saxophonist Carl Magnus Neumann – the player best known for his funky contributions to the work of Webster Lewis and the Band No Name of the Club 7 scene – but who's presented here as a much richer jazz musician overall! The set features three rare slices of work by Neumann – two 70s studios sessions, and one early 80s live date – the former with small group instrumentation that includes guitar, bass, and percussion – the latter with a slightly bigger lineup that adds four cellos into the mix! Neumann composed most of the material himself, and it's all pretty darn expressive work – bold and meaningful, yet without being too outside or avant – more in the kind of extended, open way of approaching jazz that so many 70s pianists were attempting. Carl plays alto sax throughout, and titles include "Kludder", "Kalimera", "Blues", "Nr 1", "No Surt Og No Sott", "Wind", and "Ballade".

Michael Wycoff — Love Conquers All ... LP
RCA, 1982. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A seminal classic from vocalist Michael Wycoff – thanks to some killer help from Webster Lewis – who not only produced the album, but also plays keyboards on the set! The album's got a bounce and bubble that's right up there with Lewis' best from the late 70s – but thanks to some rich vocals from Wycoff, it's also got a bit more depth too – especially on some of the mellower groovers which really sparkle wonderfully! Some moments are upbeat, others are nicely laidback – and Wycoff's rich range is given some great focus here, in a balance that makes for one hell of a great record all the way through. Titles include the stellar stepper "Looking Up To You", one of those anthemic cuts you'll recognize immediately – plus "Diamond Real", "Still Got The Magic", "Love Is So Easy", and "Love Conquers All".

Various — Steppin To Jazz ... CD
Steppin Muzak, 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $9.99
A massive treat from the Chicago scene – a dozen jazzy classics, put together with a feel for the kind of cut that's always played big on the Chi-town steppers scene! Lots of other stepping jazz CDs feature mostly newer tracks, but this one's great in that it includes a bunch of late 60s soul jazz tunes – some killer tracks from the Chess/Cadet scene, mixed with other smoother grooves from the 70s. Titles include "The Look Of Love" and "Who Dun It" by Monk Higgins, "Soul Vibration" by Dorothy Ashby, "The Stepper" by Soulful Strings, "Count Down" by Dave Baby Cortez, "Midnight Plane" and "Windy City" by Rodney Franklin, "The Love You Give To Me" by Webster Lewis, "I Feel Like Loving You Today" by Donald Byrd & 125th Street NYC, "Think About It" by Odell Brown, "Love's Victory" by Ronnie Laws, and "Hole In The Wall" by The Packers.
(Note: Some of the titles here were mastered from vinyl sources – but we've been assured that the collection is legit.)

new John Coltrane, Idrees Sulieman, Bobby Jaspar, etc — Interplay For 2 Trumpets & 2 Tenors ... LP
Prestige, 1957. Used .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
2 trumpets, 2 tenors, and a heck of a lot of open-ended blowing session magic! The format for this one's incredibly loose – as might be guessed by the "leaderless" nature of the record – but the session's a great example of the Prestige blowing session mode at its best – as it brings together unlikely groupmates, and really lets them feel each other out in the studio. On tenor, John Coltrane's deeper sound is matched with lightness of Bobby Jaspar's tone – and on trumpet, blowing session regular Webster Lewis and Idrees Sulieman show their talents at working strongly in a less-fettered format. The rest of the group includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, Mal Waldron on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and the album's 4 tracks are all nice and long – and include "Interplay", "Anatomy", "Light Blue", & "Soul Eyes".
(OJC pressing. Cover has some light wear.)
