Walter WanderleyKee-Ka-Roo ... LP
Verve, 1968. Very Good- Gatefold .... $11.99
One of our favorite albums ever from Walter Wanderley – a set that's much more complicated than his earlier trio records for Verve – and which really expands the sound with a host of added elements! Wanderley's core organ bossa groove is amplified wonderfully here with the addition of guitar, vibes, horns, and other elements – all of which help to change the rhythms and move the groove way past just simple stock bossa. Walter plays a bit of electric piano too – hinting at work on later albums – and other players include Jerome Richardson on flute, Bobby Rosengarden on vibes, John Pizzarelli on guitar, and even a bit of vocals from Marge Dodson. There's a wonderful variety of tunes on the set – including Joao Donato's "Amazonas", Baden Powell's "Canto De Ossanha", and Bob Crewe's "Music To Watch Girls By" – plus other gems like "Sensuous", "Sambao", "Arrinho Atoa", "Kee Ka Roo", and "The Bobo".
(Cover has a thin line of discoloration along the opening.)

Walter WanderleyO Samba E Samba Com Walter Wanderley ... LP
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1962. Very Good+ .... $36.99
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by keyboardist Walter Wanderley – but a set that shows his sweet bossa talents already in full swing! The groove here is light an airy – recorded with a similar sense of space as his better-known sides for Verve, but done with a feel that's a bit less polished overall – one that has some rootsier samba percussion at the bottom of most tunes, dancing underneath sweetly gliding melodies on organ and electric guitar! A few tunes have a bit of chorus vocals, which only serve to warm up the sound even more – and titles include "Palhacada", "Boato", "Nao Sabemos", "Agua De Beber", "O Samba Brasileiro", and "Murmurio".
(A great Brazilian pressing!)

Walter WanderleyQuarteto Bossamba ... LP
World Pacific, 1965. Very Good+ .... $24.99
An incredible gem from Walter Wanderley's years in Brazil – a Quarteto Bossamba recording that features Wanderley on both piano and organ, often overdubbed at the same time for a very cool sound! The style is quite different from most of Wanderley's better-known records in the US – and the heavier bossa tones on piano provide a nicely soulful counterpoint to lighter grooves on Hammond – really fleshing out the tunes with an array of jazzy sounds and colors! Wanderley's work on the piano is almost far more expressive than his more familiar organ – as he hits the acoustic keys with a sense of lyrical grace and depth of feeling that's really striking. Titles include an excellent version of "Canto De Ossanha", plus "Chuva", "Cheganca", "Vivo Sonhando", "Maria Moita", and "Verdade Em Paz".
(Cover has an Audition Copy stamp on back.)

Walter WanderleyRain Forest ... LP
Verve, 1966. Very Good+ .... $7.99
An album that not only broke the bossa big in the US – but a set that also really helped transform the sound of the organ in jazz! Not only is the record a key meeting of bossa rhythms and jazz organ – transplanted hugely to the US after a big initial Wanderley run in 60s Brazil – but the set also features some of the cleanest organ lines to ever hit these shores – a big difference from the heavier flutter that some of the US organists were using a few years before, and a sharp shift towards cleaner keyboard sounds for the rest of the decade. Instrumentation's nice and spare – mostly bass and percussion, plus a bi tof flute and guitar – and titles include the massive hit "Summer Samba", plus "Rain", "Beach Samba", "Song Of The Jet", "Cried, Cried", and "Girl From Ipanema".
(Cover has light wear.)

Walter WanderleyReturn Of The Original ... LP
Canyon, Early 70s. Very Good+ .... $6.99
A strange lost "comeback" album for Walter Wanderley – but a great one! The set was recorded recorded in the US in the early 70's, and with the same sweet electric sound that Wanderley was using on his last A&M/CTI albums! Walter plays organ and electric piano, and the group includes Fender bass and percussion – making for a smooth electric groove tha gets a bit funky at times. Tracks include "Camel Juice", "Angelique", "Nobody", and "Good Time". Very groovy!
(White label promo. Cover has a promo sticker.)

Walter WanderleyWorld Of Walter Wanderley ... CD
El (UK), 1958/1959. New Copy .... $13.99
A compilation of late 50s recordings by bossa great Walter Wanderley – the years before his massive success of the 60s – with breezy Brazilian rhythms and sweet-as-can-be jazzy organ groovers! All of the material was recorded in 1958 and 1959, and there's a range of compositions – from brilliant Brazilian composers Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dorival Caymmi, Carlos Lyra and many more, plus sweet numbers penned by Paul Anka, Howard Greenberg & Neil Sedaka and others. A massive 30 tracks in all: "Este Seu Olhar", "El Reloj", "Dona Baratinha", "O Pato", "Fim De Caso", "Diana", "The Diary", "Ho-Ba-La-La", "Mulata Assanhada", "Samba De Uma Nota So" and many more!

Walter WanderleyBatucada ... CD
1967. New Copy .... Around June 19, 2013
One of our favorite Walter Wanderley albums ever – and a record that moves past the more familiar bossa trio style used on his hits for Verve, into groovier new territory with added players who include Dom Um Romao on drums and Marcos Valle on guitar! And not only is the lineup expanded, but the styles are too – as Wanderley moves away from the straighter bossa and samba jazz of his roots, into the world of more unusual, more complicated rhythms that were showing up in the Brazilian scene at the end of the 60s. Marcos Valle's contribution is felt strongly here – as the album includes a fantastic instrumental take on his classic "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" (aka "Os Grilos") – plus other Valle compositions that include "Ainda Mais Lindo", "Batucada", and "E Preciso Cantar". Other tracks include "Wave", "So What's New", and "O Barquinho".

Walter WanderleySamba So! ... LP
World Pacific, Early 60s. Very Good+ .... $14.99 Just Sold Out!
A rare bossa session by Wanderly – recorded early in his career in Brazil, and issued here in the US by World Pacific. It's as tight a batch of bossa organ grooves as any of Wanderley's best albums from the 60's – and he's playing with a larger lineup than usual, which adds a lot to the sound, and the group's got Bolao on sax and flute, and Heraldo Do Monte on guitar. All the cuts have Wanderley's trademark firey organ sound, and the titles include "Samba In Japan", "Sad Samba", "Samba Da Minha Terra", "Samba Novo", and "Samba De Bossa". Nice stuff, and a very groovy album of bossa organ!
(Deep groove pressing.)

new Walter WanderleyWhen It Was Done ... LP
CTI/A&M, Late 60s. Used Gatefold .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing leap forward for the incredible Walter Wanderley – a record that has him mixing his earlier bossa groove with the wider vision of late 60s A&M/CTI – supported by an amazing cast of American and Brazilian artists! The vibe is wonderful from the very first note – a refinement of bossa with the more sophisticated scoring touches of CTI – arrangements from both Deodato and Don Sebesky, working wonderfully to support Wanderley's lead keyboard lines on organ and electric harpsichord! The record's arguably more sophisticated than most work of this nature coming from Brazil at the same time – and with classic production by Creed Taylor, the sound is sublime through and through! A few tracks feature a slight bit of vocals – from Milton Nascimento, Anamaria Valle, and others – and instrumentalists helping on the session include Hubert Laws on flute and Marvin Stamm on flugelhorn. Titles include great versions of "Open Your Arms", "When It Was Done", "Reach Out For Me", "Ponteio", "Surfboard", "Baiao Da Garoa", "Capoeira", and "Ole Ole Ola".
(Cover has some wear.)

new Walter WanderleyFestas Dancantes Vol 1 (Eu Voce/Feito Sob Medida/Successos Dancantes Em Ritmo De Romance/O Successo E Samba) (4CD set) ... CD
Odeon/Discobertas (Brazil), 1959/1960. New Copy 4CD .... $52.99 Out Of Stock
Amazing work from a key force in jazz organ – not Jimmy Smith, not Jack McDuff, but Brazilian musician Walter Wanderley! Not long after American artists first started hitting the Hammond for groovy sounds in the 50s, Wanderley picked up the instrument down in Brazil – and fused a jazz organ approach with lots of lively samba rhythms – to created a style that went onto become the stuff of legend, thanks to later crossover classics on Verve! The sounds here are those from Walter's roots – four albums recorded for EMI/Odeon at the start of the 60s – most of which we've never even seen in the original – which makes this reissue package even more essential! Many tracks were recorded in the early bossa nova years, and there's definitely a bossa jazz vibe to most numbers here – especially given the tight percussion, and Wanderley's great way with an easygoing groove. 4CD package features rare albums Eu Voce E Walter Wanderley (1959), Feito Sob Medida (1959), Successos Dancantes Em Ritmo De Romance (1960), and Sucesso E Samba (1960) – all totally great all the way through, with original cover art too! (Note that there are some offbeat sound passages – mostly flaws in the original tapes that create occasional distortion at short points – which haven't been corrected by the remastering. But the set is fully licensed and legitimate.)

new Walter WanderleyFestas Dancantes Vol 2 (O Samba E Samba/O Samba E Mais Samba/E O Bolero/Samba No Esquema De) (4CD set) ... CD
Odeon/Discobertas (Brazil), 1961/1962/1963. New Copy 4CD .... $52.99 Out Of Stock
Early EMI/Odeon stunners from organ genius Walter Wanderley – all of them stunners from his better-known years at Verve! Even at this early date, Wanderley had an amazing way around the keyboard – a sweet jazzy groove that was perfect for the bossa rhythms that helped him get his start – and a great ear for a lean sound on the keys of the Hammond – a much cleaner approach that was being used by American jazzmen at the time – and which undoubtedly went on to influence their style once Wanderley's music started making it up to the US! Most titles here are groovers, but even the mellower moments are great too – with loads of excellent guitar and organ interplay – but in ways that are quite different from a Hammond combo up in the north at the time. The 4CD set features rare albums O Samba E Samba (1961), O Samba E Mais Samba (1962), Walter Wanderley E O Bolero (1962), and Samba No Esquema De Walter Wanderley (1963) – all beautifully remastered, with great sound and original cover art too! (Note that there are some offbeat sound passages – mostly flaws in the original tapes that create occasional distortion at short points – which haven't been corrected by the remastering. But the set is fully licensed and legitimate.)

new Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro Monteiro — A Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Ciro Vol 1 ... CD
Copacabana/EMI (Brazil), 1966. Used .... $3.99
A beautiful set of duets from 60s samba stars Elizeth Cardoso and Ciro Monteiro – released in collaboration with the Bossaudade TV show! The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. Titles include "Melancolia", "Franqueza", "Beija-Me", "Se Acaso Voce Chegasse", and "Tem Que Rebolar".

new Talya Ferro — Look At Me ... LP
MGM, Late 60s. Very Good+ .... $4.99
Nice bit of soulful late 60's pop recorded under the baton of Clyde Otis. She sang with Walter Wanderley for a bit before this recording, and some of this stuff has a sort of bossa Latiny feel to it. Other tracks are more 60's soul sounding, but with a pop diva twist. Tracks include "Look at Me", "The Magic Door", "On Top of the World", and "We Could Learn Together".

Joao Gilberto — Joao Gilberto (1963) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Odeon/El (UK), 1963. New Copy .... $13.99
One of Joao Gilberto's first-ever albums – filled with incredibly beautiful bossa material that captures the vocals and guitar of Gilberto at their fragile early best – backed by sublime arrangements from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Walter Wanderley! The setting is perfect, and the sound is amazing – that incredible stripped-down breathy quality that made Joao a legend right out of the box – which so many others tried to copy over the years, but never got this right. A beautiful relic from the past – with a lovely image of Joao's young face on the cover – and titles that include "O Barquinho", "O Amor Em Paz", "Voce e Eu", "Coisa Mas Linda", and "Presente De Natal". CD features bonus tracks by some of Gilberto's contemporaries – including "O Barquinho" by Maysa, "Coisa Mais Linda" by Carlos Lyra, "Manha De Carnaval" by Sylvia Telles, "Bim Bom" by Oscar Castro Neves, and "O Samba Da Minha Terra" by Lucio Alves.

Ed Lincoln — O Rei Dos Bailes (6CD set) ... CD
Microservice, 1960s. New Copy 6CD .... $89.99
Incredibly groovy work from Brazilian organist Ed Lincoln – a quick-fingered player on the Hammond with a talent to rival the skills of Walter Wanderley! Like Wanderley, Lincoln worked in Brazil during the early bossa years – and had a great ear for mixing up samba and bossa rhythms with organ-driven jazz – an approach that was groundbreaking at the time, and still sounds pretty darn amazing all these many years later – especially as it's one approach to the instrument that most American players have never been able to match! The organ lines are nice and clean, and often laid out over fast-moving percussion with lots of deep acoustic elements – all the charm and power of samba and bossa rhythms at their best, made even better by jazzy riffs on the keyboard. This amazing set brings together 6 vintage albums by Ed – all with original cover art and great mastering – most presented here on CD for the first time ever! The 6CD set features the records Orgao Espetacular (1960), Ed Linoln Seu Piano E Seu Orgao (1961), Album No 2 (1962), Ed Lincoln Seu Piano E Seu Orgao (1963), A Volta (1964), and Ed Lincoln (1966).

Orlann Divo (aka Orlandivo) — Orlann Divo ... LP
Musidisc/Whatmusic (UK), 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
Warm bossa grooves – and the second album by Orlandivo, billed here on the cover as Orlann Divo! The album's a great batch of instrumentals – jazzy, with a mix of percussion, bass, and organ that's quite different from the usual bossa album of its type – much more expansive, and much more chance-taking. The use of organ is incredible – really weird at times, pushing the sonic qualities of the instrument in ways that you'd never hear on a Walter Wanderley album from the same time – and the nature of the tunes is great too, and really pushes past the usual batch of bossa covers and standards to come up with some great off-kilter styles. Features work by Ed Lincoln, Rubens Bassini, and Waltel Branco – and titles include "Samba No Japao", "Zezinho", "Amor Quadradinho", "Afim De Voce", "Vira Lata", "Somos Tres", "Saudade Em Seu Lugar", "Faz De Conta", and "Brincando De Samba".

new Various — Story of Bossa Nova ... CD
Hemisphere, 2000. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not the full story of Bossa Nova (for that, we might suggest the Trip To Brazil CD) – but a good compilation of rare tracks from the EMI/Odeon catalog, home to some of the best work ever recorded in Brazil! The set's got more than a few hits, but it also features a number of tunes that we've not had easy luck finding on CD – and at this price, the 20-track set's a great little set of bossa tunes whatever way you slice it! Titles include "Voce" by Milton Banana, "Samba De Verao" by Marcos Valle, "Corcovado" by Joyce with Gilson Peranzzetta, "Fotografia" by Sylvia Telles, "Copacabana" by Nana Caymmi, "Se Todas Fossem Iguais A Voce" by Lucio Alves, "O Barquinho" by Pery Riberio, "A Ra" by Joao Donato, "Vivo Sonhando" by Marcos Valle, "Ao Amigo Tom" by Doris Monteiro, "Meditacao" by Luiz Eca & Astor, "Amor Em Paz" by Dick Farney & Claudette Soares, "Samba De Uma Nota So" by Walter Wanderley, "Chega De Saudade" by Lelia Pinheiro, and "A Felicidade" by Agostinho Dos Santos.

new Pops — Agora E Samba (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Equipe/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A really cool shift for this hip Brazilian combo – one that you might guess right away from the "samba" in the title! This time around, the rhythms are even more lively than before – lots of tight percussion that spurs the group on strongly, and which also seems to have given a lot more space to the Hammond in the group than the lead guitar! The instruments are used almost equally on this gem of a set – so that some cuts have a bubbling organ samba sound that's like Walter Wanderley or Ed Lincoln, while others still have that twangy guitar we love on other albums by The Pops. Titles include "Desespero De Causa", "Amor De Carnival", "Se Voce Jurar", "Exaltacao A Mangueira", "Nao Tenho Lagrimas", and "Agora E Samba No 1". CD also features two bonus tracks – vocal and instrumental versions of "Butterflies Are Free".

The album bristles with energy from the very first note – virtually a blueprint for the sound of bossa piano in the 60s, with some great acoustic work here from Walter Wanderley on piano, and basslines that have a quick-spirited sense of timing to match Milton's drums.
