new Ashley Kahn — House That Trane Built – The Story Of Impulse Records (hardcover) ... Book
WW Norton, 2006. New Copy Book .... $7.99 29.95
A wonderful tribute to the Impulse Records label – one that's put together with as much graphic sensitivity as you'll find on the company's album covers of the 60s! The book is incredibly well researched – both from archival material and over 50 interviews with artists and producers associated with the label – and these writings are interspersed with a wealth of great images, including album covers, session photos, and vintage advertisements! There's also a full discography in the back, and a very helpful index – and at 338 pages, the book is a wealth of information. Hardcover, and a bargain at this price!

new Paul Lacy — Brooklyn Storefronts (paperback) ... Book
WW Norton, 2008. New Copy Book .... $3.99 17.95
A book we can really get behind – partly because we're a groovy local retailer, just like the ones featured in the pictures! The volume is exactly what's promised in the title – a beautiful look at storefronts in Brooklyn – from local grocery stores, to mom and pop neighborhood shops, to ethnic restaurants, and indie/underground retailers – all laid out in full color pictures, shot dead-on and presented with proportions that perfectly sum up the exterior space of the storefronts. The book's a great document of a world that vanishes bit by bit every year – and it instantly transports us to our favorite New York borough, and really shows the range of cultures we come across every time we visit! 158 pages, softcover, full color too!

Richard Williams — Blue Moment – Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue & The Remaking Of Modern Music (hardcover) ... Book
WW Norton, 2009. New Copy Book .... $4.99 25.95
We're not usually fans of books on a single album – but in this case, we gladly make an exception – as the creation and circulation of Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue is definitely powerful enough to fill volumes of writing! Author Richard Williams does a great job of exploring this crucial piece of jazz – not only detailing the important session and musical moment that led to the record's creation, but also looking it its influence for decades after its release – not just in jazz, but in American popular culture as well! Hardcover book is 309 pages.
