Atlantic Starr — Brilliance ... CD
A&M/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy .... $18.99
The title's certainly right on this one – because Atlantic Starr serve up a really brilliant blend of electro funk and mainstream soul – balanced with that near-perfect sound that made them one of the best groups of their generation! Despite the size of the combo, the sound is relatively lean – a very focused balance of basslines, keyboards, and some tightly snapping 80s groove rhythms – served up with vocals that warmly cascade over the tops of the tunes, but usually take a second seat to the extremely compelling instrumentation. The sound is polished, but never too slick – and the group are a great example of how well soul from this time could sound when done just the right way! Titles include "Love Me Down", "Sexy Dancer", "Circles", "Love Moves", "Your Love Finally Ran Out", and "You're The One".

Dazz Band — Keep It Live (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy .... $18.99
Dazz Band keep it plenty live on this early 80s gem – a killer set from the group's hit run for Motown! The set's got a bouncy groove that's very much in the best Motown funk style at the time – lots of bass at the bottom, and plenty tight on production – but never as smooth or commercial as work from a few years later. The group balance things out well with a few mellower cuts – numbers that still have some sort of a groove, but one that's a bit more laidback, and which shows they're not just a funk-driven outfit. Titles include the massive hit "Let It Whip" – plus "Gamble With My Love", "Just Can't Wait 'Till The Night", "Shake What You Got", "Keep It Live", and "Let Me Love You Until". CD also features the bonus track "Let It Whip (12" version)".
Also available: Keep It Live (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD $36.99

Magic Lady — Hot N Sassy ... CD
A&M/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy .... $18.99
Freaky spandex and a mighty nice groove – a record that sounds a lot better than you might guess from the group's outfits on the cover! Magic Lady are a trio of funky females – grooving in a style that's a bit like the Brides Of Funkenstein, but a lot more stripped-down – an 80s-tuned sound that's heavy on basslines and keyboards, and which vamps along tightly in clubby arrangements from producer Michael Stokes, who also plays keyboards on the album alongside Greg Phillinganes. The whole thing's got a nicely polished sound that's almost in the Kleeer mode, especially on the mellower and more midtempo numbers – and tracks include "When We Love", "Freaky", "Hold Tight", "Give It Up", "Shake", "Get Off", and "Red Hot Stuff".

Various — Disco Giants 9 – 20 Full Length Disco Classics Of The 80s ... CD
Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1980s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $18.99
Not classic disco – but a wealth of 80s soul – packed into a double-length set that's overflowing with R&B gems from the years beyond disco! Most tunes are still pretty clubby – not in an underground way, but with some of the styles of the more important soul modes of the time – those ways of hitting a groove with plenty of midtempo rhythms, sweet stepping moments, and even a bit of boogie too! Titles include "Middle Of The Night" by Body, "Passion From A Woman" by Krystol, "In The Dark" by Roy Ayers, "Rock Steady" by The Whispers, "Ain't Nothin Goin On But The Rent" by Gwen Guthrie, "Don't Let Go Of Me" by Mike & Brenda Sutton, "If You Can Do It I Can Too" by Meli'Sa Morgan, "Strip This Heart" by John Adams, "Back To Love" by Evelyn King, and "Falling In Love" by Sybil.

Various — Disco Giants Volume 10 – 20 Full Length Disco Classics Of The 80s ... CD
Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1980s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99
80s soul galore – most of it more than clubby enough to play on the dancefloor, although done with much sharper sounds than most of the work in the 70s disco generation! The cuts are heavy on bassy beats, guitar parts, and keyboard lines – often nice and lean, with that sharp punch you'd hear so strongly on soul tracks from the 80s. There's plenty of hits and overlooked classics here – and the double length set features "Guilty" by Yabrough & Peoples, "Back & Forth" by Cameo, "The Smurf" by Tyrone Brunson, "Electric Lady" by Con Funk Shun, "Dial My Number" by Pauli Carman, "Baby I'm Hooked" by Kathy Mathis, "Magic's Wand" by Whodini, "Let Me Be The One" by Five Star, "In Your Eyes" by James D-Train Williams, "Seduction" by Val Young, "Turn It Up" by The Conway Brothers, and "The Truth" by Colonel Abrams.

new Con Funk Shun — Fever ... CD
Mercury/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
One of the sweetest-grooving albums ever from Con Funk Shun – proof that the group was almost better when they tightened things up a bit! The set was produced by Deodato at the height of his hit-making soul powers – and it's got a sharpness that really helps bring the Con Funk Shun groove into focus – a style that's not nearly as commercial as Deodato's work with Kool & The Gang, but which shares a similar blend of jazz and modern soul elements! Most tracks groove nicely, even some of the mellower ones – and Deodato's got a perfect balance in the sound of the set – keyboards, beats, and bass all in the right places, with plenty of soulful vocals flowing warmly over the top. Titles include "Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold", "Hard Lovin", "If I'm Your Lover", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Indiscreet Sweet", and "Baby I'm Hooked".

new Stephanie Mills — Sweet Sensation (with bonus track) ... CD
20th Century/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Stephanie Mills in fine formation here – working with the team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, who helped the lady reach the heights of her career in the early 80s! The sound here is catchy and contemporary, but hardly ever too commercial – just relaxed and grooving, in a mode that lets Stephanie's vocals flow nicely over the top, but with a bit more of an easygoing feel than in her records of previous years. As usual, Lucas and Mtume bring a nice touch of jazz into the album – a subtle warmth that makes the best moments sparkle, really resonating nicely with Mills' vocals. Titles include the massive hit "Never Knew Love Like This Before" – plus "Sweet Sensation", "Try My Love", "I Just Wanna Say", 'Wish That You Were Mine", "D-a-n-c-i-n'", "Still Mine", and "Mixture Of Love". CD also features a bonus extended mix of "Sweet Sensation".

new Val Young — Seduction ... CD
Gordy/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
A lost little gem from the Rick James camp – a bit obscure, despite the fact that Val's a former Bride Of Funkenstein! Val's not as well known as some of the other artists that Rick James worked with back in the 80s – but given her resume, she's got a solidly soulful sound that works perfectly with the hook-heavy tunes on the set! The style's a great blend of 80s groove and some of the more mainstream soul modes of the time – bouncy little tunes that are heavy on keyboards and rasping guitar – served up with a tight sound, but still a few shades to the left of chart soul – in a way that keeps things pretty darn fresh throughout! Rick James "conceived" the album, and arranged, produced, and mixed a number of tracks – and titles include "Mind Games", "Seduction", "Make Up Your Mind","Tellin' Me Lies", "If You Should Ever Be Lonely", and "Come Hang Out".

new Various — Disco Giants – 20 Full Length Disco Classics Of The 80s ... CD
Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Way more than you'd expect from the title and cover – not a batch of familiar disco hits, but a treasure trove of club classics from the early 80s! Sure, some of the artists here are familiar – but most of them are from the indie side of the spectrum, and even the few big stars are represented by either non-hit tracks, or hard to find remixes that make this collection well worth seeking out! And given the early 80s focus of the track selection, there's less disco here than 80s groove and boogie-styled rhythms – heavy on the beats and keyboards, and still filled with plenty of great vocals. 20 tracks on 2CDs – with titles that include "Dreamer (long vocal)" by BB&Q Band, "Nights Of Pleasure (Nick Martinelli mix)" by Loose Ends, "You Can't Run From My Love" by Stephanie Mills, "I'm Out To Catch" by Leon Haywood, "Just Another Lover (12" mix)" by Johnny Kemp, "Fall Down" by Tramaine, "I Feel For You (12" mix)" by Chaka Khan, "Got To Be Real" by Selection, "Garden Of Eve (long)" by Yvonne Gage, "The Rhythm Of The Jungle" by The Quick, "Burnin Love" by Con Funk Shun, "I Need You" by Network, "Love Take Over" by Five Star, and "To Be With You" by Maxx Traxx.

new Oliver Cheatham — Saturday Night (plus bonus track) ... CD
MCA/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A stone club classic from the early 80s – one of the best mainstream groovers of the post-disco years! Cheatham's a percussionist by trade, but really comes off with something extra here – a smoothly soulful groove that's sublime from start to finish – no filler, no cliches, just the best sort of rhythms the early 80s scene had to offer! Rhythms are a mix of electric and acoustic beats – blended together with a keenly jazzy sensibility, and topped with sweet keyboards that dance wonderfully alongside Oliver's vocals. Titles include the stellar "Get Down Saturday Night", plus "Something About You", "Through It All", "Just To Be With You", "Do Me Right", "Bless the Ladies", and "Make Your Mind Up". CD features the bonus track "Get Down Saturday Night (special extended version)".

new Howard Johnson — Keepin' Love New ... CD
A&M/Vinyl Masterpiece (France), 1982. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Warmly grooving vocal work from Howard Johnson – one of the few albums the singer cut under his own name, and a sparkling gem from the 80s groove scene! Howard's got a style that really sets the stage for some of the bigger singers of his time – a sound that's mature, yet still very able to groove – which is something that Johnson does often in the set, supported by some snapping bass, electro keyboards, and crackling drums on most of the cuts. Kashif wrote about half the tracks on the album, and also co-produced – and titles include "So Fine", "Keepin Love New", "Jam Song", "Take Me Through The Night", "Say You Wanna", and "This Is Heaven".

David Axelrod — Song Of Innocence (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Capitol, 1968. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
A masterpiece! This is one of David Axelrod's most perfectly realized albums – and it's a brilliant batch of baroque arrangements, jazzy solos, and slightly subtle funky bits! The album contains the much-sampled song "Holy Thursday", but the whole thing has a very similar feel to that track – with lots of sinister strings, rumbling drums, and archly-modern bits of instrumentation. A real killer – and with the cuts "The Smile", "A Dream", "Song Of Innocence", and "The Mental Traveller". William Blake never sounded so funky!

Boscoe — Boscoe ... LP
Kingdom Of Chad/Asterisk, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $14.99 17.98
One of the hippest records ever to come out of Chicago – the sole recording by Boscoe, a group who was even more obscure and experimental than contemporaries like The Pharoahs or Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Like those groups, Boscoe has a very unique, very visionary approach – one that's not content just to echo the standard post-Coltrane modes that other spiritual jazz groups around the country were hitting – but which instead moves into territory that touches on the darker sides of funk, soul, and spoken word of the time – all with a message that's incredibly powerful, and conception that's wonderfully fresh throughout! The group's lineup features tenor, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, and drums – but they way they're put together is often far different than other funky combos – and it's clear that the group had as much of a sensibility about the overall sound of their record as they did their freer grooves. At times, there's a righteousness here that recalls the best of the early Westbound Records scene from Detroit – but there's an even higher agenda too, which is more in keeping with the spiritual aspriations of their Chicago contemporaries, and which really show up in the lyrics. The whole album's a masterpiece from start to finish – unlike anything that we can think of, still ripe for rediscovery today, and just the kind of set that makes us prouder than ever of our Chicago heritage! Titles include "We Ain't Free", "Money Won't Save You", "Now and Den", "He Keeps You", "I'm What You Need", and "Writin' On The Wall".
(Amazing gatefold reissue – heavy vinyl, heavy cover, and with all the notes of the CD!)

new Cody Chestnutt — Landing On A Hundred (with download) ... LP
Vibration Vineyard, 2012. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $23.99 24.95
Ten years since his underground Headphone Masterpiece and Cody Chesnutt is finally back with a proper follow up – one that has a more fully-fleshed out production – and it's pretty damn great! There's some striking differences in approach, but thankfully, the idiosyncratic creative bent remains! Where Headphones Masterpiece was a mind-bogglingly ambitious low fi bedroom production, this one was at least partially recorded at Willie Mitchell's legendary Royal Studios in Memphis, with a great group of studio musicians. This one is also more focused – and features a tight batch of 12 songs – as opposed to the sprawling double album debut. Cody's ear for classic southern soul craft informs this one – but his raw lyricism and great voice are still the focus, and that ultimately makes it another near-classic! We hope it won't take 10 years to make another record, but we're sure glad we finally got this one! Includes "'Til I Met Thee", "I've Been Life", "That's Still Mama", "Don't Follow Me", "Everybody's Brother", "Love Is More Than A Wedding Day", "Under The Spell Of The Handout", "Don't Wanna Go The Other Way", "Where Is All The Money Going", "Scroll Call" and more.
(Please note: Vinyl plays at 45 RPM. Includes download code.)

Lee Hazlewood — House Safe For Tigers (180 gram vinyl plus poster) ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $18.99
The soundtrack to A House Safe For Tigers – which is one of the movies Lee made with director Torbjörn Axelman for Swedish television in the 70s – and it's a great one, right up there with Cowboy In Sweden! Honestly, this might even top the better-known Cowboy In Sweden – which is all the more stunning, given that this one's been nearly impossible to find since 1975. We're Lee devotees, to say the least, and we wouldn't say that if we didn't mean it! The sounds range from laidback, hipster cowboy funk – of the kind that Lee himself pioneered and personified – to some fairly sweeping orchestrations and more specifically soundtrack-y bits, with narration and a choir. Best of all, Lee is singing as well as he ever did during this decade. An obscure masterpiece from one of our favorite figures! Titles include "Soul's Island", "A House Safe For Tigers", "Our Little Boy Blue", "Sand Hill Anna And The Russian", The Nights" and more. This great Light In The Attic version is remastered from the original tapes, new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
(180 gram vinyl – with an 18" X 24" fold-out movie poster!)

new Jimi Hendrix Experience — Electric Ladyland (180 gram vinyl plus booklet) ... LP
Legacy, 1968. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold (reissue).... $18.99
A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to comeout in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you wanted to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all feel just right. Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. A massive 2LP effort that include s"Voodoo Chile", "Crosstown Traffic", "Electric Ladyland", "Little Miss Strange", "Moon Turn The Tides", "Still Raining Still Dreaming" and "All Along The Watchtower".

Limonada — Limonada ... LP
Sondor/Lion, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
An amazing little record from the free-thinking scene in Uruguay at the end of the 60s – a strange mix of styles, but a brilliant one too! Limonada only ever cut this one record, but it's a real masterpiece – a blend of 60s beat group instrumentation, candomble rhythms, and some of the headier styles floating around the Brazilian and Peruvian scenes at the time – modes that were experimental, but always playful, and are handled here by Limonada in a sound that's instantly appealing, no matter what your language or politics! The record has a tremendously groovy sound from the very start – a compressed, slightly psychedelic sound that features lots of weird twists and turns, but always moves back into a straightforward groove in the nick of time. The production alone is worth the price of admission – at a level similar too, but rougher than, some of the Tropicalia work of the time – and titles include "Ojos Que Miran Lejos", "Pies Descalzos", "Lejos Estas", "Barrio De Casas Bajas", "Veo Luz En La Ventana", "Cambiar La Rosa", and "Viejo Tambor". Deluxe reissue package too – heavy vinyl and cover, and an insert with notes!

new Gold Leaves/Lee Hazlewood — Won't You Tell Your Dreams (smokey grey colored vinyl) ... 7-inch
Light In The Attic, 1971/2013. New Copy .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Lee Hazlewood songs ever – a really beautiful number that perfectly shows Lee's blend of the sensitive and sinister! The original is fabulous – a masterpiece of songwriting, performance, and production – and the single's worth it enough for that cut alone – but Gold Leaves actually do a pretty good take on the number too – although we still like Lee's the best!

Titles include "Let's Take It Back", "Reckless Driving", "Nothing Like This", "The $", "Man 'Em NV", "Crushin'", "Wild" (a previously unreleased track that's nothing short of mindblowing – a minimalist masterpiece), "Take Notice" and more. new Roberto Pregadio/Romano Mussolini — Kriminal (limited pic disc version) ... LP
Beat/Cinedelic (Italy), 1966. New Copy .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing little soundtrack that's every bit as groovy as its cover – a great blend of 60s mod and Italian jazz, all in support of the skeleton-costumed master thief Kriminal! This set represents the first full length presentation of the film's soundtrack – a long-overdue masterpiece that steps off the jazzier modes used in Italian films of the early 60s, touched by some of the more dynamic production and arrangement styles that were creeping in later in the decade – all served up over short, sweet tracks that dance with delight and drama throughout! There's even a bit of the British and American spy modes of the time creeping into the mix – no doubt a way of highlighting the "international crime" reputation of lead character Kriminal. Pic disc version features a total of 22 tracks from the film – pressed on very cool looking vinyl!

new John Carpenter — Escape From New York (orange vinyl with poster – and bonus tracks) ... LP
Varese/Death Waltz (UK), 1981. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A seminal soundtrack from the legendary John Carpenter – one of those key records that showed the world that he was as great of a composer as he was a director! The album's a Carpenter-esque masterpiece – lots of cool, spare electronics – used in ways that make the whole movie a whole lot scarier than even the images on the screen – a quality you'll definitely appreciate here as you listen to the album on its own! Some of the best sounds are the most subtle – spare use of basslines and keyboards that almost make you feel as if Moebius and Rodelius have gone over to the dark side – and these are mixed with just a few more "action" based moments. Titles include "Up The Wall/Air Force 1", "Everyone's Coming To New York", "The Duke Arrives/The Barricade", "Back To The Pod/The Crazies Come Out", "Police State/Romero & The President", and "Chase Across The 69th Street Bridge". A&M, 1971. New Copy 6 x 7 Inch .... $49.99 Out Of Stock
The early 70s glam masterpiece from T Rex – setting the standard for the sounds to come – and pop landmark status aside, it's probably the best album Bolan, Mickey Finn and the group ever cut! On Electric Warrior, T Rex resurrects the primitive spirit of the seediest rock of their predecessors, with a sound that's loud and anthemic. They hide sax, fluegelhorn and classical-styled strings under loud guitars, making this some of prettiest sleaze of the 70s! Classic! William DeVaughn — Be Thankful For What You Got ... LP
Roxbury, 1974. Very Good+ .... $33.99
One of the undisputed masterpieces LPs of 70s soul! William De Vaughn may never be remembered for anything else – and the poor guy will always be mistaken for Curtis Mayfield by record shoppers everywhere – but he really out-Curtised Curtis on the super-dope original version of "Be Thankful For What You Got", one of those righteous soul tunes that everybody knows, everybody loves, but which was recorded by an artist that nobody can remember. Get this one, and you'll remember William De Vaughn as a genius for the rest of your life – not only for the full 7-minute version of "Be Thankful", which has a great conga breakdown in the middle, but also for other original tunes like "Blood is Thicker than Water", "You Can Do It", and "Give the Little Man a Great Big Hand". Very righteous, and with a deep soul groove that was hardly matched by other albums of the era!
(White label promo, in the radio tracklist promo cover! Vinyl appears a bit heated, but still plays fine. Cover has some light wear. Spine has a spot of tape & a small rip.)

Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $16.99 19.98 Late May, 2013
A fuzzed out treasure trove of rare Brazilian psychedelia – wild stuff that's in many ways akin to the freewheeling sounds of the Tropicalia movement, but not necessarily taking on the cultural and political weight of that movement – and more about the boundless spirit of psychedelia and funk rock around the globe! The sounds are buzzing and indeed fuzzy throughout, ranging from raw and ramshackle guitar jams to more organ and drum driven funky, and it's really incredible stuff all around. We've been purveyors of hard to find Brazilian music for many many years, and this set – compiled by Joel Stones who also provides the richly detailed – brings to light some numbers we've never heard! 16 tracks in all: "Tema De Banana", "Era Uma Nota De" Loyce E Os Gnomes, "I Wanna Be Your Man" by Youngsters, "Ourico" by Serguei, "Lindo Sonho Delirante" by Fabio, "Cinturao De Fog" by Marisa Rossi, 'Som Imaginario De Jimmi Hendrix" by The Pops, "The Lantern" by Mac Rybell and more. The vinyl version comes with a thick booklet of notes, in English and Portuguese.
