Bob James — Two ... LP
CTI, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A monster – and quite possibly one of the greatest Fender Rhodes albums of all time! Bob James is really at the height of his powers here – stepping out with a sound that's a lot smoother than some of his earlier work, yet in a groove that's never too slick or too overproduced – as happened with some of his later records on the Tappan Zee imprint. Here, James is still a master of space and sound – using the Fender Rhodes with bell-like tones to craft some key grooves that are still having an amazing impact today, more than 30 years after the album was initially recorded! There's a darkness here that we totally love – and tracks include the legendary "Take Me To The Mardi Gras", which has been sampled by Run DMC and loads of others – plus"The Golden Apple", "I Feel A Song", "You're As Right As Rain", "Farandole", and "Dream Journey".
Also available: Two ... LP $5.99

new Wilbert Longmire — Sunny Side Up ... CD
Columbia/Expansion (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $16.99
A standout set from guitarist Wilbert Longmire – one of a few classics cut in the 70s for Bob James' Tappan Zee label, done with some great help from James on production and arrangements too! The vibe is very much in the best spirit of the Kudu Records label at the time – plenty of room for Longmire's guitar in the lead, wrapped up in some tight arrangements with a nice undercurrent of soul – grooving a bit upbeat on a few cuts, but mostly laying back in a sweet mellow vibe on the rest! Wilbert sings a bit on one cut – and other players include Richard Tee on piano and Fender Rhodes, Bob James on Fender Rhodes, Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale on guitars, and Harvey Mason on drums – on titles that include "Black Is The Color", "Lovely Day", "Starflight", "Love Why Don't You Find Us", and "Good Morning".

Johnny Richards — Wide Range ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Very Good .... $4.99
A killer album from Johnny Richards – possibly the best he ever cut! The album sparkles with all the intensity he brought to Stan Kenton's Cuban Fire album – with bits of Latin, jazz, and some of the modernist scoring that Kenton, Richards, and Pete Rugolo were using at the time. However, the main thing about this album is that it swings like a mo-fo – moving past any tricks and gags to hit a strong jazz mode, with excelelnt solo work by players like Frank Socolow, Gene Quill, and trumpeter Burt Collins. Willie Rodriguez brings some nice Latin percussion to the set – and titles include "Cimarron", "Eyes", "Nipigon", and "The Ballad Of Tappan Zee".
(Teal label pressing. Cover has some wear, aging, and a split spine and top seam held with scotch tape.)

Various — Deutsche Elektronische Musik 2 – Experimental German Rock & Electronic Musik 1971 to 1983 – Part 2 ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $22.99
An amazing collection of electronic music from the German scene of the 70s – easily one of the most exciting, innovative musical worlds of the past century! There was really something special going on in Germany at the time – a confluence of hippie rockers, serious proggers, urban punks, and academic electronicians – all coming together to completely destroy previous (or current) generic conceptions – and make mindblowing music that's still more revolutionary than most sounds from decades to come! This fab second collection of German electronic rock from Soul Jazz digs even deeper than the first – and features a few famous names mixes with some even more important talents from the underground – all packaged together with the rich notes and historical detail that make their compilations so great. Vinyl version part 2 features tracks that include "China" by Electric Sandwich, "Zeebrugge" by Asmus Tietchens, "Krautrock" by Faust, "Gibli" by Niagara, "Electric Day" by You, "Die Weisse Aim" by Sergius Golowin, "Danger Cruising" by Pyrolator, "Sundance Chant" by Gila, and "Als Hatt Ich Das Alles Schon Mal Gesehen" by AR & Machines.

new Beastie Boys — Ill Communication (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Grand Royal, 1994. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue).... $24.99 25.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
What can we say? The Beasties continue their manic trio hip hop style mixed with the live jazz/funk/garage (as in rock, not house) sound and keyboards by Money Mark – featuring a bunch of their classic material, and underappreciated album cuts. The Beasties could really do no wrong at this point in their unlikely long career. Includes the great cut "Get It Together" featuring a very sharp Q-Tip stealing the show And you can't go wrong with any LP that samples Ramelzee and K-Rob's "Beat Bop." Other tracks include the unstoppable "Sure Shot" and "Sabotage", plus "Futterman's Rule", "Shambala", "The Scoop", "Do It", "Heart Attack Man", "Bodhisattva Wow", and "Root Down".
(Features remastering overseen by the band – on 180 gram vinyl.)

new Bob James — Heads ... LP
Tappan Zee, 1977. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heads or tails, it's a winner every time – as the record's one of the last clear moments of genius from keyboardist Bob James in the 70s! The sound here is stepping out a bit more from Bob's earlier sides on CTI, but there's still plenty of great keyboard work to make the album worth seeking out – as well as that unusual James approach to rhythm, which often makes tunes come across with lots of angular moments and darker corners, no matter how smooth the overall production might sound. Other players here include Richard Tee, Ralph MacDonald, Randy Brecker, Alphonso Johnson, and Steve Gadd – and titles include the seminal break track "Night Crawler", plus "Heads", "We're All Alone", "I'm In You", and "One Loving Night".
(Cover has some light wear.)

new Various — Short Life of Trouble – Popular American Ballads 1927 to 1943 ... LP
Mississippi, Late 20s/1930s/Early 40s. New Copy .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rootsy folk and early country music – pulled from a host of pre-war 78s, and served up in one mighty nice package from the folks at Mississippi Records! The set's a real treasure – filled with darkness and a sharp edge that you might not expect from tunes of this vintage – almost bluesy at points, and quite different than some of the overdone tropes of the time! Most numbers are surprisingly clear – done with a crisp style that makes the acoustic instrumentation and spare vocals come through brilliantly – on titles that include "Reuben Oh Reuben" by Emry Arthur, "Louise Collins" by John Hurt, "Adieu False Heart" by Arthur Smith Trio, "Dark Holler Blues" by Clarence Ashley, "Molly Man" by Moses Mason, "Lulu Wall" by Bascom Lamar Lunsford, and "A Short Life Of Trouble" by Buell Kazee.

new Bob James — BJ4 ... LP
CTI, 1976. Used Gatefold .... $0.99 Out Of Stock
The 4th in Bob James legendary run of Fender Rhodes classics for CTI – and a record that still has him working with the dark edges that made the first few so great! As usual with these sets, there's a way of putting over the groove that's really unique – not really funky, but spacious enough to make even the simplest instrumental statements resonate with a punch that other fusion records never had – a James-like approach to rhythm and sound that's totally great, and which is made even better by key contributions from CTI labelmates who include Hubert Laws, Eric Gale, and Art Farmer. James plays Fender Rhodes, Arp, and clavinet – and titles include the funky sample cut "Tappan Zee", plus "Nights Are Forever Without You", "Where The Wind Blows Free", "Pure Imagination", "Treasure Island", and "El Verano".
