Buddy DeFranco — Blues Bag – Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia Of Jazz Of The 60s Vol 2 ... LP
Vee Jay, 1964. Very Good- Gatefold .... $3.99
A real lost treasure – and an incredible session that offers a real meeting of minds that's far more than you'd expect from the simple cover and title! The set is a later one for Vee Jay, and it brings together half of the Jazz Messengers with a batch of west coast players – in a groove that wonderfully mixes together different traditions and rhythms in jazz – and which steps out with a sound that's far more than the sum of its parts! Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and Curtis Fuller join a group headed by Buddy De Franco, and featuring Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, plus Victor Sproles on bass and Freddie Hill on trumpet. The sound of the group is quite unusual – and a lot lighter than you'd guess – giving Buddy plenty of room to solo in a breezy style that's grown tremendously since his 50s recordings – pushed along by some heavier soul from Art and the group. Titles include "Rain Dance", "Blues Bag", "Twelve Tone Blues", "Kush", and "Cousin Mary".
(Cover has some wear, with a small split on the bottom seam.)

Victor Feldman — Victor Feldman Plays Everything In Sight ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold .... $8.99
They certainly got the title right on this one – as Feldman moves from his usual staid jazz mode, to come up with a very groovy LP! In the course of the album, Vic gets his hands on conga, sand blocks, vibes, drums, organ, electric piano, tympani, tambourine, jawbone, novachord, and a lot more – creating some great little tunes with a heavily percussive groove to them. The set's a great mix of jazz and mod – with a sound that would make Verve weep! Titles include "Voce E Eu", "Do The Jake", "Geronimo", "Sunshine Superman", "In The Mood", "Have A Heart", and "This Door Swings Both Ways".
(Cover has some light wear – vinyl is nice.)

Chico Hamilton — El Chico ... LP
Impulse, 1965. Very Good- Gatefold .... $14.99
Amazing, simply amazing – and light years ahead of the staid sounds that Chico Hamilton was cutting in the 50s! Hamilton's one of those players who has an amazing range to his music – almost all of it really incredible, as Chico always shifts things up over time – continually trying new things, and new modes of expression – even though, given his popularity, he could have just kept recording the same things year after year. This album is true testament to that propensity for growth in Hamilton's music – a wonderfully unbridled set that's filled with unusual rhythms, odd instrumentation, and even some of the first touches of psychedelic jazz to appear in the 60s! Players include Sadao Watanabe on alto and flute, Gabor Szabo on guitar, Jimmy Cheatham on trombone, and Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja on percussion – all working together in a really wonderful range of modes from track to track – always groovy, but also pretty far-reaching and exploratory too! Titles include "El Moors", "Helena", "Strange", "Marcheta", "El Chico", and "Conquistadores".
(Orange & black label mono pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has some edge wear, staining along the top, and some pen on the back.)

John Hicks — Naima's Love Song ... LP
DIW (Japan), 1988. Very Good+ .... $24.99
A beautiful little session from John Hicks – recorded in 1988, but with a spiritual edge that reminds us of some of the best indie soul jazz sides of the 70s. Although Hicks often recorded around the time leading a trio, this set features the great altoist Bobby Watson sitting in with a group completed by Curtis Lundy on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. Watson contributed 2 tunes to the set – "Someday Soon", and "On The One" – Lundy wrote "Elementary My Dear", and Hicks penned the beautiful Coltrane-esque "Naima's Love Song".

Bonnie Koloc — After All This Time ... LP
Ovation, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $6.99
Righteous earth mama vibes from our hometown sweetheart Bonnie Koloc. Bonnie was part of the original folk cabaret scene around old town here in Chicago, and this is her first album, with her gutsy, folky vocals and songwriting underpinned by a groovy rock-inflected backing band, that features Phil Upchurch on bass! Titles include "Don't Leave Me", "After All This Time", "new York City Blues", "Devil's Nine Questions", "Another new Morn", "Rainy Day Lady", "Jazz Man", "Victoria's Morning", "Got To Get What You Can", and "One Sure Thing".

Kool & Together — Kool & Together – Original Recordings 1970 to 1977 ... LP
Heavy Light/Light In The Attic, 1970s. New Copy 2LPGatefold .... $20.99
Blistering funk rock and raw, tightly grooving psych soul from small town Victoria, TX – trailblazing material from Kool & Together. This is an amazing anthology from Heavy Light/Light In The Attic that pulls together material from private press 45s the group put in the early-to-mid 70s and previously unreleased tracks recorded by Texas music legend Huey P Meaux. There's a raw soul, funky drums & percussion core to Kool & Together's style that's really great! Singer Tyrone Sanders doubles as the group's conga player, which is a great touch! There's a demonstrable level of gritty psych soul and rock in the mix, too – wah wah guitar, in particular – but they're much more into a tight, heady groove than the kind of lumbering heft and solo-heavy styles of other Hendrix disciples. It's a family band – the earliest tracks on the set feature Charles Sanders Sr on vocals, with Charles Jr on guitar, Tyrone on conga and Joe Sanders on drums – with the boys trading lead vocals and instrumentation on other later recordings, along with additional players. A great discovery from Heavy Light Records! 19 tracks in all: "Sittin' On A Hot Red Stove", "I Know", "If You Can", "Wino Man", "Magic Words", "Peace Is At Hand", "Better Days", "Fly So High", "Electronic Funk", "Reaching Out", "Hooked On Life", "Blow It Out Your Mind", "Get Your Feet Off The Ground" and more, plus 4 demos: "Escapism Beat", "Hot Pants", "Nassau Beat" and "Wino Man".

new Vic Lewis — Vic Lewis Plays Bossa Nova At Home & Away (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/SeriE.WOC (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $49.99
A late date for Brit bandleader Vic Lewis – but a great one too, thanks to a strong focus on the bossa nova sounds of the 60s! The mode's a real change for Lewis, who could sometimes be a bit stiff – and the new groove definitely opens things up nicely – as does the album's work from a top-shelf of jazz soloists, both British and American! Side one has Lewis leading a combo that features a stellar lineup – tenor and flute from Tubby Hayes, more tenor from Ronnie Scott, trumpet from Jimmy Deuchar, flugelhorn from Shake Keane, and piano from Terry Shannon – all players who get plenty of chance to solo, and really make the music magical with just a few subtle touches. The flipside features Lewis leading a group of West Coast luminaries – Bud Shank on tenor and flute, Bob Cooper on tenor, Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Shorty Rogers on flugelhorn, and Victor Feldman both on piano and vibes. The groove is just as great as on the first side – and the whole thing's a real standout for Brit jazz at the time. Titles include "Bossa Nova Scotia", "Bossa Nova Blues", "Two Note Samba", "Last Minute Bossa Nova", "Danielle", and "Vic's Tune".
(Super-heavy pressing – and limited to 300 copies!)

Curtis Mayfield — Heartbeat ... LP
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Very Good .... $4.99
A real dancefloor set from Curtis – recorded with some sweet Philly production from the likes of Norman Harris and Bunny Sigler – in the sweeping, soaring, strings-heavy mode of the Philly disco records of the time! And yes, this isn't classic Curtis from the righteous years – but the surprising thing is how well his voice really holds up in the tracks – coming through with a strength that's fresh and surprising, given some of his disco contemporaries, and sounding pretty darn nice overall, thanks to some tight arrangements by the likes of Fred Wesley, Norman Harris, and Gil Askey. Linda Clifford does a duet with Curtis on "Between You Baby & Me", and the other cuts include "Victory", "Tell Me Tell Me", "You're So Good To Me", "You Better Stop", and "Over The Hump".

Lee Morgan — Sixth Sense ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good .... $14.99
Beautiful late work from Lee Morgan! The last five years of Lee's life saw him really stretching out to do some fantastic writing, playing, and leading – and this record stands today as one of the best examples of that period – a pure act of genius, with a sound that really takes off from Lee's earlier Blue Note albums. The styles are a unique blend of soulful hardbop and the more stretched-out spiritualism that would later emerge in the early 70s soul jazz scene – and players include the lesser-known Frank Mitchell on tenor, plus Jackie McLean on alto, Cedar Walton on piano, Victor Sproles on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – the last of whom provides an amazingly lyrical approach to rhythm, the sort that was key to some of Lee Morgan's best work of the time! Titles include "Afreaka", "Short Count", "The Cry Of My People", "Anti Climax", and "Psychedelic".

Rhythm Heritage — Sky's The Limit ... LP
ABC, 1978. Very Good .... $0.99
The third in a really great run from Rhythm Heritage – a group who continued to hold up a strong level of instrumental quality, despite the fact that they'd topped the charts, and were smack right in the middle of the LA studio scene at the time! Part of the credit goes to producer/arranger Michael Omartin – who also plays keyboards on the album, giving it one of its best characteristics – but the whole assortment of talents is pretty darn great too, and includes work by Victor Feldman, Ray Parker, and The Waters – who bring in some nice soulful vocals on a few cuts. Keeping their success with TV themes, the group do a great job with "Theme From Starsky & Hutch" on this one – taking the tune in a nice moogy sort of way – and other cuts include "Float On By", "Hedge Hog", "Skippin", "Language Of Love", "Holdin Out", and "Sail Away With Me".

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars — Jazz Structures ... LP
Philips, 1960. Very Good .... $11.99
An unusual albums from the west coast scene of the 50s – recorded under the name of the Lighthouse All Stars, but featuring arrangements and compositions by Bob Cooper – who was the real driving force behind the set. Conte Candoli's in the group on trumpet – and other players include Buddy Colette and Bud Shank on alto and flute, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Victor Feldman on vibes and percussion, Stan Levey on drums, and Cooper himself on tenor. The overall sound is relatively tightly constrained, in a "jazz suite" mode – but there's plenty of room for solo space on the set, and Cooper's writing is as fluid as his ability is strong to bring these players together as conductor. The set's got a really great feel that gets way past some of the more academic west coast work of its sort – with a lot more soul than you'd expect. Titles include "Rain Blues", "Genesis (pt II)", "Architectonics", "Directional Suite", and "The Worker".
(Black label mono pressing with deep groove.)

Dom Salvador — Dom Salvador Trio (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mocambo/Mr Bongo (Brazil), 1965. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $29.99 31.99
Wicked jazzy bossa from 60s Brazil – a crackling early classic from pianist Dom Salvador! The group here is super-tight – a tremendous triangle of piano, bass, and drums – all grooving at equal pace, with a great deal of energy – and given a heck of a lot of soul from Dom's bold lines on the piano! There's a slight lyrical vibe at points, too – making for music that's mighty sweet, and very seductive – and the whole thing's right up there with some of the best bossa trio dates of the time. Trio features bass by Edson Lobo and drums by Victor Manga – and titles include "Arrastao", "Promessa", "Pro Batera", "Santarem", and "Tematrio".

David Sanborn — David Sanborn Band (aka Promise Me The Moon) ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good+ .... $3.99
Warm mellow soul from David Sanborn – a surprisingly nice early album, recorded without all the schmaltz of his later work! The style is still quite full and professional, but there's also somehow a more earnest feel to the work – as Sanborn plays with a core group that includes Victor Lewis, Jumma Santos, and Hiram Bullock – blowing alto, but also singing a bit as well! Guest vocalists on the set include Hamish Stuart of Average White Band, plus Lani Groves and Kat McCord – and the whole thing's got an easygoing LA studio sort of groove. Titles include "Promise Me The Moon", "Stranger's Arms", "We Fool Ourselves", "Morning Salsa" and "Legend Of The Cheops".

Tom Scott — Desire ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Near Mint- .... $0.99
An early 80s set from Tom Scott, and proof that he could still make an electric jazz album sound more soulful than most of his mainstream contemporaries! There's a really great sense of balance here – production that's certainly polished, but instrumentation that's never sleepy at all – those always-sharp reeds we love from Tom, especially on alto and soprano sax – plus some great keyboard work from Victor Feldman, who has a similar sense of space and timing ot match Scott's groove! The set's got a feel that's a bit like some of the few really great albums from Dave Grusin – and some cuts have vocals, although mostly of the backup type. Titles include "Desire", "Sure Enough", "The Only One", "Stride", "Chunk O Funk", and "Meet Somebody".

Woody Shaw — For Sure! ... LP
CBS, 1980. Very Good .... $2.99
Really rich sounds from Woody Shaw – one of his sublime studio sessions for Columbia Records – a major label, but one who really let Woody explore some new ideas in his music! There's a depth here that surpasses some of Shaw's straight small group sessions – really magnificent sounds that push the boundaries of soulful jazz at the end of the 70s, yet still hold onto all the best aspects of Woody's roots – kind of a distillation of all the soulful, spiritual experiments of the past 10 years – delivered in ways that really help them reach out to new ears! The core group features Woody on trumpet and flugelhorn, Larry Willis on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – but each track features some key guest appearance too – by artists who include Gary Bartz on alto, Curtis Fuller and Steve Turre on trombones, Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, James Spaulding on flute, Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, and Judi Singh on vocals – singing beautifully on the cuts "Time Is Right" and "Why" – alongside other instrumental numbers that include "Opec", "Josua C", "Isabel The Liberator", and "Ginseng People".

Leon Spencer — Where I'm Coming From ... LP
Prestige, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Badass organ funk from the mighty Leon Spencer – a set that's got a bit of a fuller feel than some of his previous albums for Prestige – but a groove that's also equally great! The style here is somewhere between blacksploitation funk and some of the grooves from the CTI/Kudu camp – with a bit more horns than before on some of the titles, arranged tightly to provide a great foil for Leon's leaner lines on Hammond! Arrangements are by Ed Bogas on the fuller tracks, and players on the album include Hubert Laws on flute, Frank Wess on baritone, Victor Paz and Virgil Jones on trumpet, Joe Beck on guitar, Melvin Sparks on guitar, and Grady Tate on drums. One track features Leon working in a smaller trio format – and titles include "Superstition", "Give Me Your Love", "The Price A Po Man's Got To Pay", "Where I'm Coming From", and "Trouble Man".

Mal Waldron/Steve Lacy — Mal Waldron with the Steve Lacy Quintet ... LP
America (France), 1972. Very Good .... $3.99
A great idea for a session – and one of our favorite albums from the legendary America free jazz series! Mal Waldron is working here with the legendary Steve Lacy French quintet of the 70s – the ensemble that featured Steve Potts on alto, Kent Carter on bass, Noel McGhee on drums, and Irene Aebi on cello (not vocals!) Waldron's soulful and introspective work on piano provides a perfect grounding for the sometimes flighty group – and his gently-placed work on the keys acts as a strong foil for Lacy's more unbridled work on soprano sax. Side one of the record features a 20 minute version of Waldron's "Vio" – and side 2 features two Lacy compositions, "Jump For Victor" and "Blue Wee".

Various — Boddie Recording Company – Cleveland, Ohio (5LP set) ... LP
Boddie/Numero, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 5LP .... $56.99 64.98
One of the coolest sets the Numero Group has ever released – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given their already-mighty catalog! Although the label issued a previous dip into the enigmatic Boddie Recording company of Cleveland, this massive package brings together a whopping 57 tracks from the Boddie studios and related labels – many of which have never been reissued before, even by Numero – and all of which offer up a mindblowing microcosm of the American scene in the 60s and 70s – a wealth of rare funk, soul, psych, gospel, and more – all of it the kind of gritty material that 45 collectors die for! But just as cool as the music is the package itself – a heavy box with a flap that fits around five LPs, two booklets, flyer reproductions, and even a Boddie greeting card! There's loads of rare photos, band information, studio details, and more – billed by Numero as a "self-contained record industry" in one box. Musically, the whole thing's right on par with other Numero releases – maybe even above them, given the wide range and depth of the collection – and artists include Bo & The Metros, Inter Circle, King James Version, Ricky Hodges, Jackie Russell, Angela Alexander, Frankie Pighee, Chantells, AC Jones, Harvey Hall, Headlines, Modern Detergents, Penny North, JC Akins, Little Anthony Mitchell, Gospel Fabulators, Royal Kings, Corinthian Singers, Brother Bill, Victory 5, and many more.

new Various — Good God! – Born Again Funk ... LP
Numero, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $18.99 22.98
Damn funky gospel soul – the sort you'd hardly expect from spiritual folks like these, but which flourished strongly alongside more standard church-related work in the 70s! The package is a stunning follow up to Numero's first Good God volume – and really digs even deeper than that great set – pulling out a mad flurry of rare funky 45s that easily match any hip secular soul at the time, at least in the spirit of the groove! The lyrics are definitely on the righteous tip, but never too much so – and the earthly rhythms at the bottom of most tracks is more than enough to help pitch the grooves strongly towards anyone who's never even set foot inside of a church. As usual, Numero do an excellent job with the notes and details on all cuts – showing they really put a hell of a lot of thought into the collection – and titles include "I Know I've Been Changed" by Victory Travelers, "Pray A Little Longer" by Lucy Sister Soul Rogers, "Packing A Grip" by Golden Echoes, "Like A Ship" by Pastor TL Barrett & The Youth For Christ, "Been Trying" by Chicago Travelers, "The Same Thing It Took" by Inspirational Gospel Singers, "Somebody Watching You" by Sacred Four, "Peter & John" by Andrew Wartts & The Gospel Storytellers, "I Thank You Lord" by Little Chris & The Righteous Singers, and "Share Your Love" by Sensational Five Singing Sons.

Various — Lagos All Routes ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $19.99
A stellar batch of Afro funk and native groove from Lagos! Strains of western funk and soulful sounds work their way into the material – thanks again to Fela's mighty influence – but there's a lot more to it! Simmering along with the Afro funk and soul are some truly riveting native folk sounds – filtered through many of the modern influence that make the funk stuff so compelling – but providing a much more natively learned groove. Various — London Is The Place For Me Vol 4 – African Dreams & The Piccadilly High Life ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 50s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $19.99 22.99
The 4th entry in the amazing London Is The Place for me – a collection of incredible work from the postwar, post-colonial years in the UK! As with other volumes, there's an array of Carribean and African influences at work here – often highly rhythmic and performed with lots of percussion, but also served up in ways that has the original modes coming into contact with more contemporary UK styles! Most of the work here was recorded in London, but overflowing with global styles that include mentos, high life, calypso, Latin, and even a bit of jazz – played by an array of artists who all found new means of expression in the capital. Various — Nigeria Special Part 1 – Modern Highlife, Afro Sounds, & Nigerian Blues 1970 to 1976 ... LP
Soundway (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $24.99
Essential work from the African scene of the 70s – a collection of tracks that goes way beyond the more familiar grooves of Fela Kuti and Manu Dibango! The set may well be the deepest so far we've heard from the always-amazing Soundway Records – a package that digs into a wealth of under-heard music from early 70s Nigeria, all of it beyond simple stylistic definitions and overplayed world music cliches! Many of the grooves here are wonderfully unique – odd fusions of styles that include highlife, jazz, soul, Afrobeat, and other regional influences – sifted and shaken together, and spilled out in the studio with a really fresh sort of feel. Rhythms are at the core of most numbers here, but even those are often unfamiliar – skittish, soulful, and often somewhat playful – and the other instrumentation on the tracks is great too, and often resonates with some of the odd sounds and tunings we love in work on the Ethiopiques series. Vinyl part 1 features 12 tracks that include "Okwuke Na Nchekwube" by Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National, "Nekwaha Semi Colon" by The Semi Colon, "Osalobua Rekpama" by Sir Victor Owaifo & His Melody Maestros, "Onwu Ama Dike" by St Augustine & His Rovers Dance Band, "Feso Jaiye" by The Sahara All Stars Of Jos, "To Whom It May Concern" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, "Akula Owu Onyeara" by The Funkees, and "Koma Mosi" by The Harbours Band.

new Elvin Jones — Elvin! ... LP
Riverside, 1961. Near Mint- .... $18.99 Just Sold Out!
A very interesting early session for Elvin, and one that's filled with lots of warm lyrical moments – nicely laid down by Thad Jones, Frank Wess, Hank Jones, and Frank Foster. These four came together often during the late 50s on some sessions, but the addition of Elvin opens things up nicely, and creates a rhythm sound that's a bit freer than some of those old Savoy sessions or Prestige blowing sides. Titles include "Ray El", "Lady Luck", "Pretty Brown", "Shadowland", and "Buzz-at".

Contemporary, 1958. Very Good- .... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
An odd choice for material, but a surprisingly nice record – and just the kind of session needed to break Barney Kessel out of some of his too-familiar trio modes of the 50s! The record here features jazz takes on tunes from the opera Carmen – in case you didn't figure that out from the title – all adapted by Barney himself, on charts that feature Buddy Collette on flute, Ray Linn on trumpet, Victor Feldman on vibes, and Andre Previn on piano – a lineup that helps keep things creative and playful without sounding too gimmicky. Titles include "Free As A Bird", "If You Dig Me", "A Pad On The Edge Of Town", "The Gypsy's Hip", and "Carmen's Cool".
(UK pressing. Cover has a partially split bottom seam, some peeling of the gloss finish, and some discoloration due to age, with a small sticker and a rip along the bottom on the back.)

new Cannonball Adderley — 74 Miles Away/Walk Tall ... LP
Capitol, 1967. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stone classic from Cannonball Adderley – and a pivotal set that has him continuing the live recording setting of some of his best 60s albums, while also stretching forward to some of the more inventive ideas of the latter part of the decade! David Axelrod produced, and the album's definitely got his ear firmly in place – a great way of bringing together the album's hip instrumentation – Cannon's alto, Nat Adderley's cornet, and the wicked electric piano of Joe Zawinul – played here in a style that would go onto have a huge influence on countless other musicians on the instrument. Rhythm is by Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums – and as with other Axelrod live albums, there's some great spoken bits left in the mix – Cannon's charming conversation with the audience, which really opens up the tunes. Titles include the 2 title hits – "Walk Tall" and "74 Miles Away" – plus "I Remember Bird", "Oh Babe", and "Do Do Do".
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover is worn, with some seam splitting, light staining, and a bit of marker on the back. Label has a bit of marker.)

Stones Throw, 2007. New Copy .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long awaited sides C & D in Madlib's incredible blend of Bombay soundtrack-styled funk, blunted Eastern beats, and all round stunning Middle Eastern accented hip hop instros! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Amazing! "Get It Right", "More Rice", "Indian Bells", "Club Scene", "Duel", "Organ Stroll", "In The Cave", "Malfunction", "Victory", "Smoke Circle", "Raw Ground Wire", "New Bombay", "Shah Sound", "Another Getaway", and more.

new Joe Byrd & The Field Hippies — American Metaphysical Circus (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Columbia, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing little record from Joe Byrd – an artist with roots in serious music, but who's serving things up here with a wild hippie aesthetic that makes the whole thing come across more like a "happening" than the usual sort of studio album – but in ways that also echo an earlier generation of Americanist composition too. The process of the record mimics some of Byrd's famous work in New York – and has a very collaborative feel overall, with elements of electronics, acoustics, and vocals coming together beautifully! There's some great tabla, harpsichord, moog, and organ on the record – plus more serious woodwinds and brass – and vocals from Victoria Bond, Susan De Lange, Christie Thompson, and Ernie Anderson – plus Joe himself. Titles include "Kalyani", "Moonsong Pelog", "You Can't Ever Come Down", "Gospel Music", "Nightmare Train", "Leisure World", and "The Elephant At The Door".

new James Clay — Double Dose Of Soul ... LP
Riverside, 1960. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most revelatory albums ever cut by reedman James Clay – a player who's often lumped into the "hard blowing" camp because of his Texas roots, but one who emerges here with a great deal of sensitivity and imagination! The record features Clay playing both tenor and flute – clearly a "double dose of soul" – and on the latter instrument, he's got a really wonderful style that's a bit like Yusef Lateef, still hardbop and swinging, but touched with a sense of exoticism that really makes for a unique sound to the record. And even on tenor, Clay's got a looser, more introspective sound here – one that catches the mood set by the rest of the group – with Victor Feldman on vibes, Gene Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – plus a bit of extra cornet from Nat Adderley on a few tracks. The album has a good modal feel in parts, and a stronger soul jazz groove in others – and it's one of the great sets put together as part of the "Cannonball Presents" series for Riverside in the early 60s. Tracks include "Lost Tears", "Pockets", "New Delhi", and "Linda Serene".
(Blue label Bill Grauer pressing, with microphone logo & deep groove. Cover has some wear, a couple of small stains at the bottom, an ink stamp on the back, a split spine, and splitting on the top and bottom seams.)

new Dick Dale — Dick Dale At The Drags ... LP
Capitol/Rock Beat, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $17.99 18.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Surf guitar hits the drag strip – as Dick Dale makes the same move as most of his Cali contemporaries of the 60s – shifting his groove from waxed boards and woodies over to the world of hot rods! The sound's still pretty much the same, though – smoking instrumentals filled with Dale's amazing lines on guitar – a way of hitting the instrument that was a lot harder, heavier, and more frenetic than most other surf/instro players of the period – with a raw bite that arguably sets the scene for hard rock in the part of the decade to come! Vinyl version features 14 tracks rom Dale's hot rod recordings for Capitol – with cuts that include "50 Miles To Go", "Nitro Fuel", "Surf Buggy", "Firing Up", "Taco Wagon", "The Victor", "Mag Wheels", "Wild Wild Mustang", and "Night Rider".

Columbia, 1963. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key point in the development of the Miles Davis sound of the 60s – his first album to feature work from Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – augmented by some equally nice work on other tracks from Victor Feldman and Frank Butler! The sound here is beautifully spare – a wonderful exploration of ideas that Miles had been putting forth on some other albums for Columbia, but crafted here with a vision that's apparent in the very first note – and which transforms both the tunes and the work of the players into a focused, near-perfect sound all the way through. Titles include "So Near So Far", "Seven Steps To Heaven", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Joshua", and "Basin Street Blues" – which even sounds great in this setting!

new Andrew Hill — Dance With Death (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful session by Andrew Hill – recorded in 1968, but issued only briefly in 1981 – and out of print for years! The session is a key one in understanding Hill's work – as it's a bridge between the arch modernism of his early Blue Note sides, and the more soul-oriented playing of the Grass Roots album. The group features Joe Farrell and Charles Tolliver on horns – both of whom open up the sound at the same time they're giving it a nice bottom – and the rest of the combo includes Victor Sproles on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. The album's an enchanting one – lighter than earlier years, but still with a compelling vision that's all Hill's own. Titles include "Dance With Death", "Love Nocturne", "Black Sabbath", "Partitions", and "Fish N Rice".

new Bobby Hutcherson — Cruisin The Bird ... LP
Landmark, 1988. New Copy .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record from Bobby Hutcherson – easily one of his best of the 80s, and with some great touches that recall his best 70s work! The album title might fool you into thinking that Bobby's working in Charlier Parker territory here – but he's not, and is instead grooving in a mellow and soulful west coast mode – working with a totally great group that includes Ralph Moore on tenor and soprano sax, Buddy Montgomery on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The whole album's a magical picture of tone, color, and light – but the especially standout track is "Sierra" – a totally killer number that has these arch angles and edges that rival the best sounds heard on Hutcherson's Montara album! Other titles include "On The Delta", "Crusisin The Bird", "Imminent Treasures", and "All Or Nothing At All".

Bethlehem, 1961. Used .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic sextet session recorded in 1961, shortly before Booker Little's death – and filled with all the promise and power he ever packed into his playing! There's a sharp, angular groove to many of the numbers here – that mix of modern and hardbop that was cresting best in the early 60s Blue Note generation – and which echoes some of the work that Little had done with Max Roach in the years before this date. The lineup's filled with great players to help Book realize his strongest musical vision – Julian Priester on trombone, George Coleman on tenor, Don Friedman on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and although the set's issued on the sometimes-staid Bethlehem label, it's got all the sharper edges of an early 60s date on a label like Impulse or Candid! Titles include "Matilde", "Booker's Blues", "Forward Flight", and "Victory and Sorrow".

The core of the material is by Les' trio with Leroy Vinnegar on bass – but most tracks feature an expanded sound, either by adding Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja on Latin percussion, or by backing the group with off-beat arrangements by the great William Fischer, whose talents had graced some of the best Atlantic jazz albums at the time! new Alphonse Mouzon — Man Incognito ... LP
Blue Note, 1975. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A monstrous bit of jazz funk from drummer Alphonse Mouzon – spacey tracks in a choppy style that reminds us a bit of some of the best European fusion albums from the period, but with a harder groove overall! Mini Moog and ARP trip out the sound throughout, but the underlying rhythms are nice and heavy. Lee Ritenour's on guitar, and he gets a lot of play on the record – but the main groove is Alphonse's heavy funky snakefoot! Al's drums and percussion are furiously frenetic, and he also plays a lot of keyboards – and other players include Tom Scott on tenor, Dave Grusin on clavinet, Victor Feldman on bongos and congas, and Charles Meeks on bass. A few tracks have vocals – by Marty McCall, Jackie Ward, and Caroline Willis – as well as Alphonse himself and the album's also got two very nice break-oriented tracks – "Snake Walk" and "New York City" – both with nice hard drums! Titles include a number of other good fusion groovers, like "Without A Reason", "Just Like the Sun", "Before You Leave", "Just Like The Sun", and "Mouzon Moves On".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner, ring & edge wear, and some creasing.)

new Woody Shaw — Rosewood ... LP
CBS, 1978. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Woody Shaw's debut for Columbia Records – and easily one of the most soulful major label jazz sessions of the 70s! The album's a beautiful summation of all that Shaw had done in the years before – his soaring, searing lines that first came to play as a sidemen for others, then took new shape on the Muse label as a leader – all really hitting home here in an immaculately put-together set! The album's still got all the best soul jazz elements of Shaw's work from a few years before, but it's even more powerful in its presentation – with none of the mis-steps that could sometimes mar Woody's albums when he wasn't hitting on all burners. Shaw plays both trumpet and flugelhorn, and the rest of the lineup includes Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. Joe Henderson blows on three number – and titles include "Rosewood", "Every Time I See You", "The Legend Of Cheops", "Rahsaan's Run", "Sunshowers" and "Theme For Maxine".

A killer album of hard instrumental Latin soul tracks – one of the few albums ever done by funky reed player Mauricio Smith! On the set, Smith plays flute, alto, and soprano sax – and the record's filled with short little groovers that have a nice choppy sound, and lots of heavy conga work by Marcelino Valdes and Victor Pantoja! Other instrumentation includes organ, trumpet, and guitar – blasting out with some really mad rhythms, and very much in keeping with the crazy 60s work of Joe Cain, who arranged the whole thing. The album's got a sound that's very much in keeping with it's funky ghetto cover – and titles include "Hot Peppers", "Viva Guajira", "More Bread", "Mambo For Mauricio", "Puttin You Down", and "El Green Hornet". Delmark, 1958. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little record – not only for the early trumpet work of Ira Sullivan, but also for the presence of tenorist Nicky Hill – an under-recorded legend from the Chicago scene of the 50s! The set features Sullivan in extremely tight bop formation – working on longer tracks that represent some of his greatest work on record – studio sides, but done with the sense of on-the-fly imagination of his landmark live dates. Hill's a great partner on this date – a player whose edge and timing really makes things bristle, and a reminder that Chicago had a lot of great jazz to offer the world back in the day! Rhythm is by Jodie Christian on piano, Victor Sproles on bass, and Wilbur Campbell on drums – and titles include "Nicky's Tune #3", "Wilbur's Tune", "My Secret Love", "When Sunny Gets Blue", and "Nicky's Tune #2".

There's a really unique feel to this record – lots of jazzy inflections that go way beyond some of the standard riffing of Afro Funk – underscored by this positive energy that's a bit hard to describe, but which comes through right away on first listen – almost some of the righteousness of the American spiritual underground, but definitely more Afro-styled overall. The album's a very rhythmic one – with Ben in the lead on bass, working with a combo that includes Larry Bunker on vibes, Victor Feldman on piano, Ray Crawford on guitar, and Carlos Valdez on Latin percussion. Tracks are short, groovy, and have plenty of Latin touches – and titles include "The Message", "Baby You Should Know It", "For Heaven's Sake", and "One for The Woofer".

Muse, 1974. Used .... $29.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful album from Harold Vick – one of his greatest, and very much in the sublime spiritual mode of his stellar Don't Look Back record on Strata East. Vick's moving past the hard soul jazz of the 60s sides he cut with organ players – and he's hitting a freer groove that's marked by a more modal approach to playing, almost in the mode of Harold Land with Bobby Hutcherson on Blue Note. Of course, this record makes us think of that pair even more because it's got lots of great work on vibes by Victor Feldman – plus piano by Walter Bishop Jr, bass by Ben Tucker, and drums by Mickey Roker. new Various — Music City Sessions Vol 1 – Richmond Experience (with download) ... LP
Omnivore, Early 70s. New Copy .... $17.99 18.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare funk from the Oaktown scene of the early 70s – most of it previously unreleased! The package is tremendous right from the start – cut from the same Music City cloth as work by Darondo, with an equally rough-edged, messed-up sort of feel – one that goes way past familiar funky sounds of the time! Bass is often quite heavy in the mix, giving most of these tunes a really strong, fat bottom sound – and some of the instrumentation has this wicked jamming fuzzy feel that almost recalls the best of the Westbound sound in Detroit. Titles include "Richmond Experience" by Kevin Burton & Peace, "Wouldn't It Be A Shame" by The Soul Messengers, "Check Me Out (alt)" by Little Denice, "Gumbo" by Victor Green, "Freedom Train" by Kevin Burton & Peace, "Just A Man" by Chucky Thurmon & Pharris Wheel, "Giant Hamburger (part 2)" by Victor Green, and the cuts "Get Down" and "Havin Fun" – both by unknown artists!

The wealth of music here is really amazing – rare gems recorded at Music Cty in Oakland, with a vibe that matches some of the more famous funk of the time – especially some of the trippier sounds from the other side of the bay, given that many of these cuts have a nice psychedelic undercurrent! A few groups here are ones we know from other work – making the album an essential piece of the puzzle in the funk underground of the 70s – but even if you're not a digger for rare stuff, you'll still find plenty here to love – as most of these tracks are plenty infectious right from the start. Titles include "Super Strut" and "City Country City" by Cookin Bag, "House Rocker" by Love Uprisers, "Backyard" and "Just Got To Be Loving You" by Houston Outlaws, "Drifting" by Chucky Thurmon &Y Pharris Wheel, "Bumpin On Sunset/We Got More Soul" by Charles Williams with Darondo, "Victor's Theme" by Victor Green, and "Let's Get It Together (early version)" by Two Things In One.

Eddie's working here in that complicated approach to jazzy rhythms from the later Tico years – inflected by a bit of straighter salsa rhythms – in a style that proved that it never hurt to put a bit of intellectual approach in the grooves! The album's got one wonderful standout track in the 14 minute long "Una Dia Bonita" – a massively complex number that initially features some really dark, spare piano – but then has Eddie stretching out a highly progressive groove. Players on the set include Victor Paz, Ronnie Cuber, and Jose Rodriguez – and the album also features a bit of vocals from Lalo Rodriguez. Contemporary, 1958. Used .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
One of Sonny's brilliant west coast sessions for Contemporary – records that shouldn't sparkle as much as they do, but which actually stand with his best work of the 50s! Sonny's blowing in front of a session of "leaders" that includes Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne, and Victor Feldman, who plays vibes on one track. Sonny's the real leader here, though – as his bold, proud tenor tone really takes front seat, carving lines that never get tired, bringing a sparkle into tunes like "You", "How High The Moon", "I've Found A New Baby", "The Song Is You", and "I've Told Ev'ry Little Star". Heck, even with songs like those, the album should be weak – but there's an undeniable magic that really makes it great!

One of the best live jam sessions on MPS – a really freewheeling performance, filled with an assemblage of all star players! Glorious and spirit shaking Gospel Funk – a selection of stellar singles from the House Of Beauty label – stirring with Goodness and infused strongly with secular soul and funk influences! The House Of Beauty label started in the basement of Carmen Murphy's Detroit beauty parlor, which became a rehearsal space for local gospel acts, and soon enough a pioneering local label for gospel and some secular vocal groups. By the mid 60s, HOB became a gospel subsidiary for Scepter Records in NYC and things started getting funky! This vinyl only set on Secret Stash includes a tight collection of singles that are steeped in funk, some in a slow cooking way and others more uptempo. The vocals are wonderful and spirited all the way, accompanied by guitar, drums, bass and organ on most tunes. Includes "Power Lord" by The Victory Travelers, "Play It By Ear" by Rev Milton Brunson, "Trouble All Around Me" and "Serve The Lord" by Southland Singers, "If You Think Your God Is Dead, Try Mine" by The Swan Silvertones, "New Testament" (plus a reprise) by The New Testament, "Working People" by Connie Pitts, ""Can't Find No Toher Love" by Messiahs Of Glory and more.
(Vinyl only release – and it comes with the MP3 download!)

new Various — London Is The Place For Me – Trinidadian Calypso In London, 1950 to 1956 ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing collection – and one that really helped completely revise our understanding of Caribbean music! The collection features a fair bit of artists with roots in the West Indies, but who made a huge impact on London's postwar immigrant population – the new rise of non-native residents who were swelling the ranks of the city in the years after the way – bringing with them new cultures, new sounds, and new traditions – with all the requisite ideas and politics that might imply! The work here often has a subtle social agenda – working through themes important to these new Londoners, yet still echoing modes of the homeland as well – often with great musical backings that's heavy on percussion, jazzy instrumentation, and very upbeat rhythms. Titles include "London Is The Place For Me" by Lord Kitchener, "I Was There" by Young Tiger, "Some Girl Something" by The Lion, "No Carnival In Britain" by Mighty Terror, "Jamaica Hurricane" by Lord Beginner, "Birth Of Ghana" by Lord Kitchener, "Victory Test Match" by Lord Beginner, "Spanish Calypso" by The Lion, "Bulldog Don't Bite Me" by Timothy, "My Landlady" by Lord Kitchener, "If You're Not White You're Black" by Lord Kitchener, and "Aguiti" by Lord Invader.

new Ebo Taylor — Love & Death ... LP
Strut (UK), 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A brilliant new album from legendary Ghanaian performer Ebo Taylor – recorded in Berlin and backed by members of Poets Of Rhythm and others from that city's loose collective of international players dubbed the Afrobeat Academy – and the set itself is a great mix of classic Ghana grooves and timeless Afro Funk! Guitarist and vocalist Taylor has roots in the highlife style from the late 50s through the 60s, but from the 70s onward he's been deftly blending styles – from traditional Ghanaian sounds, to Afro funk, jazz and soul. This excellent album for Strut Records carries on that adventurous spirit wonderfully. It's also the first ever Ebo Taylor album to receive an international release, reason enough to celebrate, all the more so given the creative high point the album is! Titles include "Nga Nga", "African Woman", "Love And Death", "Mizin", "Aborekyair Aba", "Obra" and the instrumentals "Victory" and "Kwame".

Hitland (Italy), 1960s. New Copy 2LP .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Easily one of the best in this excellent series – as the package combines familiar bossa numbers with rarer, more obscure ones – going for a sweet jazzy groove we totally love! Getting past the nudie cover, the set's got a level of quality that's totally high – some killer tunes that bristle with the best of Brazil in the 60s – a whopping 18 tracks that include "La Rana" by Agustin Pereyra Lucena, "What Is This Thing Called Love" by Carlos Piper, "Danielle" by Tamba Trio, "Amor De Nada" by Victor Assis Brasil, "Reza" by Luiz Carlos Vinhas, "Buzios" by Bossa Tres, "Samba Nago" by Dom Um Romao, "Samblues" by Som 3, "Jangal" by Dom Um Romao, and "Senzala (Coisa #8)" by Moacir Sanos – plus "I Remember April" by Johnny Guitar Watson, a surprising early 60s track with a bossa piano groove!

new Sonny Rollins — Sonny Rollins In Japan ... LP
Victor (Japan), 1973. Used .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums of the 70s – a Japanese-only live date that features some excellent work on both tenor and soprano sax! The group has a really great feel – thanks to congas by Mtume and guitar from Yoshiaki Masuo – both of whom bring some new elements to Rollins' groove, alongside electric bass from Bob Cranshaw and drums from David Lee. Sonny's solos are all well-blown and quite extended – put together with a strong sense of fire, and a bit less of the hoke that could sometimes show up on other US domestic albums. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Powaii", "Moritat", "Alfie", and "St Thomas".
