Joe BeckStrangers In The Night ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1999. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Warm later work from guitarist Joe Beck – a sweet trio session that features George Mraz on bass and Billy Hart on drums! Beck's got a great sound on the record – a colorful tone that's quite fitting for the album's tribute to Frank Sinatra – certainly not the same sound as the voice of ol' Blue Eyes, but definitely expressive in ways that Frank might have appreciated. Most tunes are standards, and some numbers have a trace of that slight rasp that Beck used during his funk years, mixed in with more traditional tones on the guitar. Titles include "Black Orpheus", "Strangers In The Night", "All Of Me", "Once I Loved", "Nancy", and "Last Night When We Were Young". CD

Eddie HigginsIf Dreams Come True ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2004. Used ... $11.99
Warm, late nite work from the Eddie Higgins trio – that great 90s lineup that features Eddie on piano, Jay Leonhart on bass, and Joe Ascione on drums! It's hard to adequately get at the genius of these guys together in words – as their power is somewhat subtle, but damn effective – a way better sound than we might have ever expected from Eddie many years back, and the kind of a record that's really got us renewing our look at his talents! Higgins is both bold and sensitive on the set – masterful on the keys, yet quite unassuming as well – hard to peg adequately, but just the sort of strength that more than justifies all the tape the Venus Records label have spun on him in recent years. Titles include "If Dreams Come True", "Summertime", "Shinjuku Twilight", "Caravan", "Nightingale", "Frenesi", "Into The Memory", and "Minor Swing". CD

Moffett Family Jazz BandMagic Of Love ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1993. Used ... $11.99 14.99
Spiritual work from the great Charles Moffett and his talented family – all of whom have matured nicely by the time of this recording! Gone is the sloppiness of some of the earlier Moffett Family albums, and in its place is a tight soulful groove – with a progressive soul jazz sound that reminds us of the best moments on the Strata East label during the 70s! Charnett Moffett's on bass, Charles plays alto and tenor, Mondre plays trumpet, Codaryl's on drums, Charisse sings on two tracks, and Charles Sr. plays some nice vibes along with his usual drums. Tracks include "Mandingo Warrior", "Magic Of Love", "Short Stuff", and "The Gift Is Love". CD

Claude WilliamsonSong For My Father (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1993. Used ... $14.99
Lovely work from pianist Claude Williamson – a player we like so much more in his later years than we did when he first started out in the 50s! Williamson's really got a depth to his keyboard work here – a way of playing a wide range of sounds and colors, yet without ever showing off too much – kind of a simple, unassuming lyricism that's as moving as it is understated – set up with some gentle rhythm accompaniment from Andy Simpkins on bass and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Titles include "Feelin Fine", "Easy Living", "Alone Together", "Work Song", and "Song For My Father". CD

✨✧ JR MonteroseMessage ... CD
Jaro/Venus (Japan), 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful session cut by the obscure tenor player J.R. Monterose – a musician who never made it big by jazz standards, but who was always one of the most respected players amongst his jazz contemporaries. This rare session was originally cut for the short lived Jaro label, and on vinyl, it sells for well over $100 (if we ever see it!) The session's got Monterose's unique tenor in a setting with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and as you might expect from that cast, the set's a great mix of hardbop and modernism. Titles include "Straight Ahead", "Short Bridge", "Green Street Scene", and "Chafic" – and the CD's got the original cover photo of Monterose from the LP, plus 20 bit remastering! CD

✨✧ Kenny DorhamArrival Of Kenny Dorham ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Kenny Dorham's best records ever – and one of his rarest too! The set was cut for the short-lived Jaro label, home to a few great jazz sides during its short-lived American tenure – and the set features Kenny grooving at a level that's extremely tight, very much in the best spirit of his work for Blue Note or Prestige – and recorded here with equally top-shelf sound! The record shows Kenny at his lyrical best – working alongside the piano of Tommy Flangan, who really helps enforce this side of his music – and also getting some help from Charles Davis on baritone, who brings in some darker edges to the record. Other players include Butch Warren on bass and Buddy Enlow on drums – on tracks that include the original entitled "Stage West", plus another sweet tune by Davis entitled "Turbo" – as well as the numbers "Butch's Blues", "Six Bits", and "Stella By Starlight". CD

✨✧ Al HaigAl Haig Quartet ... CD
Period/Venus (Japan), 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A near-lost session from pianist Al Haig – playing in an unusual (for him) format that features piano, guitar, bass, and drums! Haig's piano is recorded with a style that makes it a bit echoey – using the space of the studio in a way that seems to hang the notes in air a bit more, creating a sound that's got lots of nice blue undertones. The guitarist on the set is Benny Weeks, and he's mostly playing rhythm – and the rest of the group features Teddy Kotick on bass and Phil Brown on drums. Tracks are all relatively familiar – a mixture of evergreens and bop standards – but they're played by the group with an evocative quality that's got some nice rough edges. Titles include "You Go To My Head", "Woody N You", "The Man I Love", "Stella By Starlight", "Undecided", and "Tea For Two". CD
(Out of print 1995 Japanese pressing with obi. Still sealed.)

✨✧ Archie SheppBlue Ballads (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1995. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Blue blowing from Archie Shepp – a great set of ballads from later years, recorded at a time when Shepp had stepped back inside considerably from his styles of the past – but still brought a great depth of soul to his recordings! The tunes here are mostly familiar numbers, but Archie blows them with a tone and timing that's amazing – an approach that's almost comparable to the late years of Coleman Hawkins, at least for its understated brilliance. Other group members are great too – and include John Hicks on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums – the last of whom is wonderfully restrained on the date. Titles include "More Than You Know", "Little Girl Blue", "Blue & Sentimental", "If I Should Lose You", and "Alone Together". CD

✨✧ Eddie AllenRemembrance ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
Eddie Allen was a relatively young trumpeter at the time of this date – but he's got some very solid grounding from a mature trio that features Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Carl Allen on drums! On another label, like Muse, the set might have a rougher sort of feel – but here, on Venus, it comes across with a nice degree of focus and class – never too overly thought-out, but still with a direction that really works well for Allen's soulful trumpet and flugelhorn lines. Titles include "Remembrance", "Baptized In The Fire", "It's The Nights I Like", "Nudge", and "The Spoiler". CD

Venus (Japan), 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
The younger Grant Green grooves in ways that would have made his pops proud – recording here in a sweet old school style that features Hammond from either Reuben Wilson or Michael Torsone, plus alto sax from the legendary Eddie Pazant! There's a warm, fluid groove to most tracks – one that hits that same sort of Prestige-era groove referenced in the "Jungle Strut" title – and the hollow-body tones of Green's instrument ring out very nicely next to the organ lines on the set. Titles include "Green Onions", "We Can Fly", "Jungle Strut", "Walk On By", and "When A Man Loves A Woman". CD

✨✧ One For All (Eric Alexander, Jim Rotondi, et al)Killer Joe ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from a great lineup – an assortment of players who've made quite a name recording sets like this one for the Japanese market! Tenorist Eric Alexander is very firmly in place on the set – giving it the same gentle soul and well-crafted sound as his own great albums – and other players include Jim Rotondi on trumpet, David Hazeltine on piano, Joe Farnsworth on drums, and Steve Davis on trombone. The horns in the frontline are beautifully poised throughout – tightly crackling on the head arrangements, then breaking out in soulful solos – in a way that reminds us a lot of some of the legendary work by the Benny Golson-Art Farmer Jazztet. It's no surprise that the group covers the Jazztet standard "Killer Joe" – and the album also features great versions of Duke Pearson's "You Know I Care" and Ahmad Jamal's "Night Mist Blues" – plus originals "Island" and "Hot Sake". ✨✧ Jimmy ScottAll Of Me – Live In Tokyo (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2003. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A 21st Century date from Jimmy Scott – recorded live in Tokyo with small combo backing that almost gives him more of a groove than in some of his other late-life sessions! The band's billed as The Jazz Expressions – and features TK Blue on alto and flute, Jon Regen on piano, Hillard Greene on bass, and Dwayne Broadnax on drums – players who are clearly confident enough of their own talents to not be cowed in the presence of Scott – a fact that sometimes obscures the gentler sides of Jimmy's aging vocals, but which can also be appreciated in terms of the way they don't just lay back and go for a sleepy sort of set. Titles include "I'll Close My Eyes", "Why Was I Born", "I Cried For You", "Time After Time", "Pennies From Heaven", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". CD

✨✧ Richie BeirachManhattan Reverie (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2006. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
There's a bit of reverie here, but it's usually the swinging kind instead of the sleepy variety – thanks to a well-formed groove from Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Hart on drums! The tunes certainly include a few ballads, but Richie usually takes them with a freely fresh sound that gets past any obvious standard-heavy cliches – inspired, no doubt, by the inventive changes of Mraz and Hart, who seem to spur him on strongly, especially on the more upbeat tracks. Titles include "Manhattan Reverie", "Transition", "Veils", "Etude", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "Footprints". CD

Venus (Japan), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great work by this youthful alto talent from Italy – a player with a tone that's every bit as classic as you might expect from the album's cover! Cafiso plays with an edge that's sharp, but a tone that's almost as deep as a tenor at times – really opening up on the longer tracks here, with a sense of spontaneous invention that's spurred along strongly by rhythms from Andrea Pozza on piano, Aldo Zunino on bass, and Nicola Angelucci on drums. The set includes a version of "Seven Steps To Heaven" – as promised in the title – plus "Yesterdays", "Green Chimneys", "Skylark", "Milestones", and "Crazeology". CD

✨✧ Bill CrowFrom Birdland To Broadway (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bassist Bill Crow is perhaps best known for his work in the Gerry Mulligan group of the 50s, but he also had a great revival moment in the 90s – thanks to a well-penned autobiography, and a few great sessions as a leader like this! The album's got the same title as Bill's life story, and it's billed as something of a musical accompaniment to that book – but really just works best as an illustration of the fact that Crow had grown tremendously as a musician in his years after working with Mulligan – a well-rounded talent on the bass, and a leader with a good vision for steering together younger talents. The group's a quartet – with Bill on bass, Carmen Leggio on tenor, Joe Cohn on guitar, and David Jones on drums – working in a mix of modes that recall Crow's modernist roots in the 50s, but which have some warmer, more mature tones that reflect his (then) current presence on the upper echelon of the New York scene. Titles include "From Birdland To Broadway", "News From Blueport", "Tricotism", "Autumn Leaves", "Night Lights", and "My Funny Valentine". CD features 2 bonus tracks not on the original album – "Okay Bug" and "Share A Key". CD

✨✧ Jack DeJohnetteTime & Space ... CD
Trio/Venus (Japan), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare early date as a leader for drummer Jack DeJohnette – a set done for the Japanese Trio label, and with a vibe that's similar to Jack's wonderful records for Prestige! DeJohnette is not only one of the most inventive drummers in jazz at this point, he's also a musician who's willing to step way out of his usual bag – mixing in Fender Rhodes, organ, melodica, and marimba to the music – used in all these cool, creative styles alongside acoustic and electric bass from Dave Holland, who also plays a bit of percussion! The pair duet wonderfully together – with energy that's quite different than any sort of ECM-styled session of this nature – songs that have a good focus, and get really great results from both players. Titles include "Time & Space", "Lydia", "Hewineeway", "The Rain Forest", and "Turned Around". CD

Venus (Japan), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Shame about the cover, but cheescake nudie image aside, the album's got all the poise, class, and grace you'd expect in some other classics from pianist Roland Hanna – a player who already attained majesty in his music, long before he started adding "Sir" to his name! There's a fair bit of classical numbers here, used as surprising vehicles for jazz expression by Hanna – not the usual "jazz meets classical" vibe that stays very faithful to the structure of the original compositions – but more just a basic inspiration for improvisational melodies, played by the trio in a way that has Roland's piano strongly out in the lead, with subtle accompaniment from Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on drums. Titles include "Prelude", "Like Grains Of Sand", "Serenade", "Apres Un Reve", "Based On Gustav", and "Going Home". CD

Late work from Eddie Harris – but a great session too, and one that cooks with raw soulful energy that shows he was still at the top of his game! The date's a quartet session, with that spare, back-to-basics approach Eddie was using in the years after his bigger 70s fame – a great reminder of the tenor roots from which he sprang in the Chicago scene, where he could still make some compellingly complicated moments, even without any electricity or tricks. Other players include Jacky Terrasson on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and titles include "Little Sunflower", "Freedom Jazz Dance", "For All We Know", "Georgia On My Mind", and "Lisa Marie" CD

Venus (Japan), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Scott Hamilton blows some wonderfully smokey tenor here – sounding great in the company of Eddie Higgins' trio! The date's got a really old school tenor sort of sound – echoes of Ben Webster and Lester Young, but updated too – taken to the clear, mature territory of Higgins' recent sessions with his trio for Venus Records – although this time around with Hamilton, the group's a quartet, with Steve Gilmore on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums. The ballads are especially nice, but we like the gentle swingers too – and titles include "You're My Everything", "By Myself", "Melancholy Rhapsody", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". Beautiful trio work from Steve Kuhn – a player who really hit a new stride in his sound on these sessions for the Japanese Venus label! The feel here is a bit warmer than most other Kuhn settings – but that's a nice thing too, as Steve's always got this sense of lyricism in his music, but it's sometimes hidden by sharper tones and more experimental moments. Not so in a date like this, which is straight, somewhat relaxed, and nicely swinging – thanks to rhythm accompaniment from George Mraz on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums. A wonderfully majestic album by Pharoah – sort of a follow up to his Welcome To Love album of ballads and standards, but handled with a bit more of the expansive soul of some of his other recordings. Like that previous album, this one has Pharoah playing tenor in a quartet with William Henderson on piano – but the difference here is that Sanders has chosen a deeper, darker set of material – one that includes a few strong Coltrane originals, which are done in freely flowing versions that take along the other tracks with their energy. Light, lively piano work from Claude Williamson – a set that almost takes us back to his famous dates of the 50s, but one that's also got some great mature depth as well! This second layer of Williamson's expression really comes through nicely on the ballads – which have a slow-burning warmth we really like – a sound that's also augmented greatly by the basslines of Andy Simpkins, who has a great depth of feeling in a setting like this. The more upbeat numbers have more of the Williamson of earlier years, and a bit more work on drums from Albert Tootie Heath as well. Beautiful sounds from pianist Denny Zeitlin – one of those players who often gets overlooked, but who's made some incredibly expressive music over the years! The album's got a sparkle that really takes us back to Denny's 60s sides for Columbia, but it's also got a slightly more mature quality as well – especially at the gentler moments – a sense of humanity that definitely comes through the passage of time in Zeitlin's years at the piano, given just the right sort of gentle accompaniment here from Buster Williams on bass and Al Foster on drums. The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". Hank Mobley had been making records for Blue Note for a number of years before this set – but Caddy For Daddy is one in which he really takes off – mixing earlier hardbop modes with a more complex approach to both rhythm and lyricism – matched with some wonderful work from Lee Morgan in the frontline, who was also really hitting new heights at the time – in a group that also includes Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The group plays this amazing mix of soul jazz and modal grooves that sets a whole new standard in the Blue Note catalog – and every cut is a winner, with titles that include "Venus Di Mildew", "The Morning After", "3rd Time Around", and "Ace Deuce Trey". Fantastic material all the way through, with tracks that will stay in your head for years – and one of the greatest jazz album covers ever! CD

✨✧ Perrey-KingsleyIn Sound From Way Out ... CD
Vanguard, 1966. Used ... $4.99
One of the moogiest records of all time – a legendary LP of "electronic pop music of the future" – sourced and claimed as an influence by everyone from Stereolab to the Beastie Boys! The legendary team of Gershon Kingsley and Jean-Jaques Perry are working here in early tape experiments that chop up quirky analogue electronics – and uses them to produce moogy songbits and space sounds, all with a really groovy beat! There's a simple magic here that has made the album hold up for years, and stand apart from a legion of later imitators with a clear, simple, and effective style that makes the best of all the bleeps and blonks in the set! Titles include "Unidentified Flying Object", "Spooks in Space", "Barnyard In Orbit", "Swan's Splashdown", and "Girl From Venus". A loving musical space party! CD

✨✧ RezillosCan't Stand The Rezillos/Mission Accomplished But The Beat Goes On ... CD
Sire, 1978/1979. Used ... $5.99
First up is Can't Stand The Rezillos – a record with guitars fast and hard enough to almost be late 70s punk rock, but which often comes off with a more playful, whimsical new wave sort of approach! Tracks are short and hook-heavy – produced by Bob Clearmountain with that razor-edged quality he brought to his best work of the time – and the trading off of lead vocals between Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds makes the record hang nicely in a space between Blondie and The Ramones! Titles include "Flying Saucer Attach", "No", "Top Of The Pops", "2000 AD", "It Gets Me", "Glad All Over", and "Cold Wars". Next is Mission Accomplished – a fierce little live set from The Rezillos – one that comes as quite a surprise, since the group had only issued one studio set before – but a great choice overall, as the live setting really seems to set them on fire! Things here are harder, faster, and sharper than on their debut – with more punk speed and energy in the guitars, even if the songs themselves are more in a power pop mode – as tuneful as they are quick-moving! The concert was actually the group's last – recorded at a time when they'd announced a breakup – and that maybe gives the whole thing an urgency that was missing before, and which really makes us wish they'd kept recording. Titles include "Top Of The Pops"," Mystery Action", "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonite", "Thunderbirds Are Go", "No", "Teenbeat", "Ballroom Blitz", "Destination Venus", and "Culture Shock". ✨✧ Miles DavisComplete Birth Of The Cool ... CD
Capitol, Late 40s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Legendary early work from trumpeter Miles Davis – late 40s sessions for Capitol Records that are completely different than the bop material he was cutting with Charlie Parker and on his own! Instead, these sides have Miles working with a complex, more arranged style – built up with a young Gil Evans, in a mode that prefaces the later famous recordings the pair would make in the late 50s for Columbia. Here, the tracks are shorter, but beautifully blend bop ideas with fuller arrangements – and Davis blows alongside other key young modernists in a variety of larger groups – with work from Lee Konitz on alto, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding on trombones, Al Haig and John Lewis on piano, and Kenny Clarke and Max Roach on drums. Mulligan contributed plenty, too – his ideas on an overall sound definitely helped shape these sides – and the record's go on to legendary status – even though it's very different than most other Miles Davis from the time. Titles include "Godchild", "Jeru", "Move", "Venus De Milo", "Budo", and "Deception". This "complete" package follows up the core tracks with live material recorded at the Royal Roost, even before the original studio sessions – in a group that features Mike Zwerin on trombone with Konitz, Mulligan, Lewis, and Roach – plus a bit of vocals from Kenny Pacho Hagood. Titles include "Darn That Dream", "Moon Dreams", "S'Il Vou Plait", "Move", "Birth Of The Cool Theme", "Godchild", and "Budo". CD

✨✧ Jazzanova & OthersRemixes 1997 to 2000 ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2000. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent work from one of the most important production teams of recent times! Jazzanova have sharply defined the modern European taste for Brazilian and Latin-inflected grooves on the dancefloor – beginning in the mid 90s with work for the (then) new Compost Records imprint, and working up to present days with countless remix efforts for other artists. Sadly, Jazzanova have yet to cut an album of their own work – and this double-length set is probably the best full way to experience their rich talents. It features 20 tracks in all, many with a strong Brazilian or bossa flavor, and most with a tight dancefloor approach to jazz. Titles include "We Who Are Not As Others" by 4 Hero, "Soul Power" by Marcshmellows, "Carajillo" by Truby Trio, "Get Into My Groove" by Incognito, "Amazon Adventure" by Azymuth, "Words Of Love" by Soul Bossa Trio, "Welcome To The Party" by Har-You Percussion Group, "Planet Of Breaks" by Visit Venus, "Burnin" by Tate's Place, "Toda Tersafeira" by Soul Quality Quartet, "Circe" by Ursula Rucker, "Fifths" by Ski, and "Complete Life" by Liquid Lounge – all remixed by Jazzanova! Impulse, 1967/1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest recordings ever made by John Coltrane in his later years – a record that has him stepping off into really new territory that would have really been something, had he stayed on the planet long enough to make more recordings like this! The vibe is very experimental – almost predating loft jazz work to come in the 70s – as Coltrane works here just alongside the drums of Rashied Ali – a fantastic match for his mighty talents, as the pair work together with a whole new extrapolation of the spiritual territory that had been unlocked on more famous records of the time. The material didn't come out until years after Coltrane's death – at a time when others were already recording this way – but the set maybe blows away some of the best material of this nature from the 70s. Titles include "Mars", "Venus", "Jupiter", and "Saturn". CD

Tremendous work from Azar Lawrence – part of a great return to form the reedman has had in recent years – and, if anything, a run of music that's maybe even greater than his legendary sides from the 70s! Lawrence is razor-sharp throughout – spinning out bold, soulful lines on tenor and soprano sax – with a quintet that includes Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Benito Gonzalez on piano, Essiet Okon Essiet on bass, and Jeff Tain Watts on drums! Payton's got a fire that may well surpass his own recent albums – and Lawrence provides a set of original compositions that soar to the stars from the very first note – really wonderful tunes that include "Venus Rising", "Gandhi", "Lost Tribes Of Lemuria", "The Seeker", "One More Time", and "Rain Ballad". Gerry Mulligan meets up with a great array of 50s modernists here – in specially setting dedicated to all Mulligan-penned compositions! Although a radical player himself on the baritone sax, Gerry also added something strong to the 50s jazz catalog with his great tunes from the early days – gently modern numbers that slowly became standards over the years, thanks to respect from other players. The best of these tracks are showcased here – played by Mulligan with a sax section that includes Zoot Sims on alto and tenor, Al Cohn on tenor and baritone, Lee Konitz on alto, and Allan Eager on alto and tenor. Rhythm is by the piano-less section of Freddie Green on guitar, Henry Grimes on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums – and titles include "Venus De Milo", "Revelation", "Sextet", "Turnstyle", "Four & One More", "Crazy Day", and "Disc Jockey Jump". ✨✧ Velvet UndergroundVelvet Underground & Nico ... CD
MGM/Verve (Japan), Late 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great album by Lee Morgan – and one not to pass up! The Rumproller often gets too easily lumped next to The Sidewinder – because of an obvious title and cover similarity to that hit record – but like that one, the album's far more than jazz cliche – and shows Lee Morgan to be one of the greatest jazz musicians of the 60s. The set starts off with the title cut, "The Rumproller" – hard-wailing soul bop, in the manner of Lee's most popular work – but then it easily flows into more sensitive material that has a freer, lyrical feel – like the great original tune "Eclipso" and Wayne Shorter's "Edda" – both of which are superb. Lee is astounding, as always, on trumpet – and the rest of the group includes the great Ronnie Matthews on piano, plus Joe Henderson, Victor Sproles, and Billy Higgins. Plus, this CD reissue features a bonus track – Shorter's "Venus Di Mildew", a great composition! CD

The sound is never too loud here – and John Scofield's right out in the lead on most numbers, carving out those soulfully-inflected, modern-styled licks that really characterized his sound back in the day! Scofield's emerged as more of a traditionalist in recent years, but on 80s dates like these he was really embracing the bigger sounds of the time – and has a way of mixing his guitar roots with kind of a fuzzier, more electric vibe – of the sort that the Gramavision label could do wonderfully at the time. The group is mostly a quintet, with Don Alias on percussion – and keyboards are by Robert Aries on all tracks, but George Duke steps in with some solos as well.
