Solid roots from Junior Kelly! Essential Afro reggaefrom Ivory Coast pioneer great Alpha Blondy – 1984's standard bearing Cocody Rock! The title track and defining anthem "Cocody Rock" was cut at Tuff Gong and sort of paved the way for African reggae to come. A number of the tracks feature backing by the group Solar System and the whole thing is great. Titles include "Cocody Rock", "Tere", "Super Powers", "Interplanetary Revolution", "Fangandan Kameleba", Bory Samory" and dub versions of "Cocody Rock" and "Tere".

Classic mid 70s dub – purportedly with King Tubby handling the controls on one side, and Lee Perry on the other – and Winston Edwards and the Natty Locks laying down the unstoppable backing tracks! The King Tubby side is particularly heavy – with the bass and percussion rumbling so strong underneath some sweetly soulful bits of horn and guitar – straight-up excellent mid 70s dubs! The purported Upsetter side isn't as heavy in mood or tricked out – but it's still pretty great – and in a way that really allows the Natty Dread backdrops to stand up strongly in their own light. With "Blood Of Africa", "Wood Roots", "Luke Lane Rock", "People From The Grass Roots", "Crime Wave" and "No Justice For The Poor".

Mostly instrumental, but not quite dub, though some cuts do have Perry's vocals on top. Slow rolling and a bit murky, this set bears no relation to the Super Ape set, other than the freaky cover, but is still infused with Perry's unique vison. 10 tracks in all, including the title track, "Bird In Hand", "Psyche & Trim", "Huzza A Haha" and "High Rankin Sammy".

Lee Scratch Perry's funky reggae party, put together at the Black Ark, with Boris Gardner, Mickey Boo, Sly Dunbar & Winston Wright. A nice batch of skanking Jamaica funk, with the requisite Black Ark smoke blowing throughout. Includes a bunch of classic Perry-isms, with Scratch dropping verses with his own unique perspective, like "Yu Squeeze My Panhandle", "Roast Fish & Cornbread", "Soul Fire" & "Free Up The Weed"

Barry Brown at Channel One – a record titled Right Now, largely recorded in the early to mid 80s – and has a truly timeless sound that holds up incredibly well! Barry's working with producer/arranger Jah Screw on the tracks – and backed by We The People Band and Roots Radics for on most tracks – plus the Owen Rennalls Band on the stellar "Mafia". Landmark work from Eddie Palmieri – a stunning performance by his Harlem River Drive band, recorded live before a very wild crowd at Sing Sing Prison! The feel here is a blend of the sound heard on the legendary Harlem River Drive album – a unique fusion of Latin, soul, and political consciousness – and some of the styles of Eddie's own groundbreaking albums of the early 70s – and it's made all the much deeper by its performance in front of an audience who was very receptive to the message of the tracks. All tracks are long and very hip, and titles include the protest poetry cut "Jibaro/My Pretty N*gger", plus the groovers "Azucar (parts 2 & 3)", "Muneca", "VP Blues", and "Pa La Ocha Tambo".

That's quite a Village People cover on the front – no surprise, as The Ritchie Family are also another key project from VP creator and disco wizard Jacques Morali! All the best Morali modes are firmly in place – that hard-driving, long-grooving style that's perfect for the clubs – with extended grooves that blend core instrumentation with larger soaring strings – all at a length that's bound to get most clubgoers as steamy as the guys on the cover! A newly-recast Ritchie trio of Vera Brown, Jacqui Smith-Lee, and Dodie Draher handles the vocals with a boldness that matches the grooves – and titles include "Sexy Man", "Put Your Feet To The Beat", "Bad Reputatin", and "It's A Man's World/Where Are The Men".

Tight!! Lee Fields, one of the great criminally under appreciated funky geniuses of the 70s is back with another pounding, raw funk classic that still finds the man at the peak of his powers, decades after he first made mark on the funk landscape! This is Lee's first full length effort for Soul Fire, a label that we all know goes to painstaking lengths to carefully carry the torch lit by the People Records scene in the 70s into the future, and it's great to see a titan like Lee do amazing work for a great label that does it purely for the love! Lee is absolutely on fire on all 10 of these tracks, with a Godfather like delivery that knocks us out of our chairs every time, whether it's that fiery funk howl that we love so much, or a smooth, soulful glide on the occasional ballad. He's backed up by a bona fide funky orchestra at Soul Fire Studios that includes TONS of hot drums, propulsive percussion, and some driving conga work that steers things into an afro funk groove on several of the tunes. The group MVP, other than Lee himself, could be multi instrumentalist Leon Michels, whose work on flute, keys, tenor and baritone sax, as well guitar and bass not only helps keep the classic 70s feel going, but keeps things crackling at breakneck speed. This isn't newfangled funk revival, this is the real deal from one of the originators – a 33-minute funk maelstrom that will knock you right out of your chair, and have you restarting it the second it ends! Includes "Problems", "The Right Thing", "Rapping With Lee", "I Don't Know Where I'm Going", and "Honey Dove". Oh, if only all of our heroes remained this vital!

Sweetly percolated sounds from Five Star – a great collection that finally brings together all the remix material they served up on singles during their big run for Sony Music! The group burst into prominence at a time when music formats were really expanding, especially in the UK – where usually a few different varieties of a single were issued at once. Given the already-catchy sound of the group, their style is a perfect one for mixing – usually great hooks that really stand out, no matter what the changes made – which in most cases here, are for the better – and definitely emphasize the groove of the tunes! 2CD set features 26 tracks in all – and titles include "Hide & Seek (ext dance mix)", "Crazy (12" version)", "System Addict (dub rmx)", "Stay Out Of My Life (12" version)", "Let Me Be The One (dance mix by Hardrock)", "Love Take Over (Paul Hardcastle's ext version)", "RSVP (remix s'il vous plait)", "Whenever You're Ready (crazy dub jammy)", "Are You Man Enough (Shep Pettibone 7" mix)", and "Another Weekend (Friday night dub mix)".

Now a classic, and pretty tough to get a hold of on vinyl. Beats by Buckwild, Showbiz and Lord Finesse, rhymes by Harlem's finest. Big L didn't leave behind much recorded work, but if this LP has to stand as his legacy, it's a mighty fine statement. Bobby's got an approach to melody that's all tied up in the rhythms – one that has most of the instruments in the group vamping along with the grooves, while solos take off in wonderful flights that soar to the skies on waves of sound and soul – echoing a sense of joy and life that few other albums of the period can match, and hitting a groove that's complex, yet instantly moving and deeply personal.
