Lee Perry & The UpsettersHigh Plains Drifter – Jamaican 45's 1968 to 1973 ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $18.99
A stunner! High Plains Drifter collects material from the mighty Lee Perry during the crucially creative and fertile period between 1968 & 1973 – in which he founded the Upsetter imprint and had some chart success. It was such a productive period, resulting in hundreds of singles and a number of albums, that a whole bunch of incredible music made during it has been pretty badly overlooked over the years! This set on the always great Pressure Sounds puts together 20 of those – many of them simmering with quite a funky sound! Killer organ grooves and smoking rhythms highlight numbers by Val Bennett, The Mellowtones, The Ethiopians, Junior Byles and, of course, the amazing Upsetters! Glen Adams and Winston Wright handle those organs, sax by Tommy McCook, bass by Aston Barrett, trumpet by Bobby Ellis and other legendary instrumentalists, plus Lee Perry on percussion and production. Includes "Val Blows In" by Val Bennett & The Upsetters, "Boss" by Count Sticky & The Upsetters, "High Plains Drifter", "The Man With No Name" and "Amigo" by The Upsetters, "It's Growing" by Busty Brown & The Upsetters, "What's Wrong With You" by The Bleechers, "He Don't Love You" by The Silvertones, "Awake" by The Ethiopians, "A Big Joke" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Rockfort Psychedelion" by Count Sticky & The Upsetters, "Iniquity Workers" by The Faithful Brothers, "Rip Up Festival '71" by Junior Byles & Righteous Upsetters and more.

Lee Perry & The UpsettersMusical Bones ... CD
Justice League (UK), 1975. New Copy .... $14.99
Lee Perry & The Upsetters – rolling them Music Bones in peak form here – stellar mid 70s Black Ark material from the master! This one totally delivers the goods: raw, gritty, funky jams cut at the Black Ark during the height of Perry's most creative period. Vin Gordon's trombone is pushed waaaay up to the front of the mix in these instrumental versions, which are basically dubs, though there's not too much in the way of echo drops and atom bomb reverb – but on this album that's just the way we like it, so we can feel every beat of the chunky rhythms! 15 tracks in all, including "Coco-Macca", "The Message", "Licky-Licky", "Quinge Up", "Raw Chaw", "Four Of A Kind", "Nah Go Run", "Mek It Soon" and "Voodoo Man".

Lee Perry & The UpsettersReturn Of Wax ... CD
DIP/Justice League (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $14.99
An excellent lost session from the Black Ark! Tracked by Perry with Upsetters in 1975, these stripped down dubs feature some of the dopest, funky rhythms Scratch ever cut, while others have a super spare, loping Jamaican groove. The sound is crisp and tight, without the giant thunderclaps and echo drops you'd here in a Tubby mix, but chirping guitars and sublimely funky bass ducking in and out of the mix. From the same sessions that gave us the Kung Fu Meets The Dragon set, you know it's right with titles like "Last Blood", "Deathly Hands", "Dragon Slayer", "One Armed Boxer", "Fists Of Vengeance", "Samurai Swordsman" and "Final Weapon", plus the CD includes 2 bonus tracks, "Experience" with Delroy Butler and the extended mix of "Living My Life".

new Lee Perry & The UpsettersSound System Scratch ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
Dub rarities from Lee Perry at Black Ark studio – rumbling riddims and hazy atmosphere that is as hypnotic and incredible as ever – a wealth of material rarely heard outside of sound system dances collected by the unbeatable Pressure Sounds label! A steady, if often seedy rhythm holds this magical dub plate mixes together – with more tripped out touches on the outer edges – be it a trippy use of echo, clattering bits of percussion or harder to explain vibes. Amazing stuff featuring Lee & The Upsetters with Augustus Pablo, Keith Rowe, Winston Right, Clive Hylton, Junior Murvin and others. Includes "Dub Plate Pressure" by Lee Perry, "Lama Lava Mix One" by Agustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Groove Dubber", "Groove Rider", "Jucky Skank", "Zeal Of The Lord", "Dub Of The Lord" and more by The Upsetters, "Bushdub Corntrash" by Winston Wright & The Upsetters, "Roots Train Number Two" by Junior Murvin & The Upsetters, "Living Dub" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters and more. 20 tracks in all.

Lee Scratch Perry & The UpsettersScratch & Company Chapter 1 (plus bonus tracks) (3 X 10" colored vinyl box set) ... LP
Clocktower, 1970s. New Copy 3 x 10" .... $32.99
Pivotal Black Ark material from Lee Perry – with brilliantly tripped out echoey dub production – and scorching instrumentation laid down by the mighty Upsetters! Split roughly in half between Perry's nicely gritty instrumental moodcraft and hazy vocals, this collection features some uber prime Upsetters material. It's all hear – heavily rumbling bass grooves, tripped out, though spiritually resonant vocals and just enough of smoky haze without getting too thick to breathe. Amazing stuff! Includes "Scratch The Dub Organizer", "Bush Weed Corn Trash", "When Jah Come", "Curley Dub", "Serious Joke", "Who You Gonna Run To" and "Tighten Up". This beautiful 10" box set edition is probably the nicest version we've ever seen – presenting the original 10 tracks laid out 2 per side – with 2 bonus tracks on Side B of record three: Susan Cadogan's "Do It Baby" and Scratch's own "Longer Way".
(3 X 10" colored vinyl in a heavy duty box. One of the highest quality releases of the material we've ever seen!)

new Lee Perry & The UpsettersUpsetter ... CD
Trojan (UK), 1969. Used .... $8.99 Just Sold Out!
One of Scratch's classic early sides, with a spare sound that displays the roots of his unique approach that would push him to the top of the scene as one of reggae's greatest talents. While these early tracks don't have the murky smoked out grooves of his later years, they have the solid song writing and production touch without which his Black Ark excursions would have just been a reverb drenched mess. Mostly easy skanking Upsetters numbers – with titles that include "Tidal Wave", "Heat Proof", "Night Doctor", "Man From MI5", "Dread Luck", and "Thunderball" by The Upsetters; plus "To Love Somebody" by Buster Brown, and "Kiddy O" by The Muskyteers.

Lee Perry & Friends — Black Arkives ... CD
DIP/Justice League (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $14.99
Massive! An incredibly sweet, funky batch Black Ark reggae – killer cuts by Leo Graham, The Imposters, Dillinger, The Gladiators and more, most especially, the mighty Upsetters! A number of the vocal tracks have a sweet harmony sound, and while other compilations often pair dubs and vocal versions, this one skims the cream instead, only pairing up a few cuts that way, but don't worry, there's no shortage of Upsetters jammies here. Scratch drops just the right amount of murky sauce on these numbers recorded between '73 and '75. Titles include Leo Graham's "Jump It", Sam Carty's "Life Is A Flower", Dillinger "Cane River Rock", The Imposters "Have Some Fun" and "Nature Man", The Gladiators "Time" and The Upsetters' "Vampire (horns)", "Jamaican Theme" and 'Perceptive Dub".

Snapper (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
A stunning look at a legendary London club of the 60s – presented here in a really well-done book-style package – with a CD that's brimming over with the American soul that made it groove so great back in the day! new Various — Midwest Funk – Funk 45s From Tornado Alley ... CD
Jazzman/Stones Throw, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98 Out Of Stock
Quite possibly one of the greatest funk compilations ever – and we're not just saying that because we're from the Midwest! The genius compilers at Jazzman spent years scouring the smaller cities of the American hinterlands – tracking down obscure musicians, long-lost labels, and nearly-gone master tapes – all to bring together 23 bits of rare funk that bristle with the same energy and excitement as the day they were first recorded! The package is incredible – not only filled with incredible tunes that somehow manage to push the boundaries and redefine our understanding of classic funk from the time, but also doing so in a package that's filled with liner notes that offer more information on the artists than probably their own mothers know! Plus, the set's also got some previously unissued numbers as well – making it a must-have for any funk fan, even if you've somehow managed to track down original copies of some of these choice bits! new Macka Dub — Sound Of Macka Dub ... LP
Clocktower, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A tasty set of rootsy mid 70s rhythms, cut by the core of the Upsetters band, with Wire Lindo, Bobby Chung and Carlton and Family Man Barrett, alongside a host of other musicians. Though it's not credited as such, the set's supposedly cut at Tubby's and was mixed by one of his acolytes, Prince Phillip Smart, who approaches the mix with a very minimalist touch, not too much space dust sprinkled over the rhythms here, which is just the way we like it on this set, it lets the percolating funk bubble up from underneath without too much echo to get in the way! A heavy lesser known dub side that's one of our forgotten favorites! 11 tracks in all, including "Bradsta Dub", "Ista Episode", "Dub In My Soul", "KC Black", "Mike-O-Lette", "Capo Dub" and "Shotman Chow".

Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Classic Studio instrumentals from the hottest house band in the history of Jamaican music! Alongside the Skatalites the Sound Dimension were responsible for crafting the tunes and rhythms that emanated from Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label from the very dawning of the reggae age, and what better group could you ask for, featuring Jackie Mittoo, Ernest Ranglin, Leroy Sibbles, Horsemouth Wallace, Vin Gordon and Cedric Brooks? Guaranteed to blow your mind, this set features the finest selection of Jamaican instrumental R&B around, with jaunty, easy skanking numbers with a nice dose of loping funk sprinkled throughout. 16 tracks in all, including "Heavy Beat", "Federated Backdrop", "Baby Face", "Love Land", "Full Up", "Upsetters Dream", "The Thing", "My Heart In Rhythm", "Man Pon Spot", "Holy Moses", and "Soul Shake"
Also available: Jamaican Soul Shake Vol 1 – Sound Dimension At Studio One ... LP $24.99
